Trying to have more alcohol free days

@FeelingLessTired

Following on from your thread of 200 days without alcohol which had filled up.

I posted on that - but of course went back to having a couple of glasses of wine with a meal in the week. Have since had regular blood test as on rheumatoid meds, and found liver function test is raised again Sad - not dangerously so - but not great. So I've stopped any alcohol since 14th Oct.

If anyone would like to join to be accountable on my 10 days in - please do.

This article was quite encouraging...

No judgements from me at all if you're on another attempt to do this.

What happens to your liver when you quit alcohol

The liver has remarkable self-healing powers. But it has limits, so don’t abuse it.

@Dogladycrazy I can only speak for myself , I have never been alcohol dependent and I wouldn’t say I’m an alcoholic. For me, it’s trial and error to see what works and what sticks. I don’t want to give up completely as I do enjoy it, but I need to find the right balance. Last weekend was a good example of how I’d like to drink responsibly. One bottle of wine over three days and no craving this weekend. I was originally disappointed I gave in last weekend but have reflected on this and I’m glad I didn’t deny myself just because I wanted to make it to end of January!

@Doyouthinktheyknow have an amazing time and let us know how you get on. Well done on dry January 🙌

Doyouthinktheyknow · 08/02/2026 11:59

So I’ve done one dry evening on holiday and I’m glad I didn’t drink because I was really dehydrated from the flight but I’m not going to manage to stay dry😩
I miss a glass of wine of an evening too much! I’ve decided to aim to drink on evenings I’m not going to the gym the next day so every other night basically and I’ll aim to drink a lot less than I used to. Just a glass of wine or 2. Previously it would basically be a bottle of wine a night on holiday minimum.

@Doyouthinktheyknow have a fabulous holiday! That's sounds like a good plan.
To the poster talking about abstaining through the week then being able to enjoy yourself on the weekend - I'm really struggling with it. I'm drinking more than I used to in a single session because I feel like I deserve it and I've been looking forward to it.
When I was younger, if I had a big night out planned I have a drink or 2 the night before to stop me going overboard the next day...does that make any sense?!
I've been a bit up and down. I had one drink on Sunday at a party, 2 on Saturday afternoon again at a gathering. Before that it was 2 on the Wednesday. So probably 1.5 bottle over a week
Not terrible but I wish I hadn't.
Tonight I went for a walk at bedtime as my kids aren't great at bedtime for my husband if they know I'm there. I usually go to the lovely pub down the road for a drink but I walked straight past and came home for a cuppa.
I've got a party on Friday and have offered to drive to take the temptation away.
Well done everyone, it's good to keep checking in.

Goldleafcat · 13/02/2026 16:12

Hey everyone! Checking in. I’ve now managed 3 weeks of achieving my alcohol free target through the week (I am drinking at the weekend though). I’ve lost weight too. So many bloody calories in that wine! (I was clearly in denial about wine calories).

Lovely to hear how you are getting on.

TryingAgain2026 · 26/02/2026 20:20

Hello, how is everyone doing? I had a little blip last week, drank of full bottle of white wine within 30 minutes and was so angry with myself. I reflected on it and it was a form of self sabotage. It happened after a continuous 2 week period of happiness and bliss, it was just a really good few weeks and I always self
sabotage when that happens, usually with food (binge eating) but sometimes with alcohol. lt feels good to name it and I have since got a good book about self sabotage on Audible so listening to that is helping me. I want 2026 to be the year I tackle these problems…

wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing. It’s not going to be a quick fix for me and I’m okay with it.

OH has health issues and has been told to stop alcohol. He's never been a heavy drinker but does enjoy it socially. Its now seven of more years without alcohol. If he's out he's started on the alcohol free beers and lagers. Apparently they're not bad and means he doesn't have to stick to cola or coffee.
