No alcohol in 2024

Noalcohol2024 · 27/12/2023 21:17

I gave up alcohol for an entire year 10 years ago and I am going to challenge myself to do it again in 2024. Anyone want to join me? I won’t lie I found it really hard. However, it did help me reset my habitual drinking. I feel ready to do it again. If anyone else feels a year off alcohol is something they want to do then join me on January 1st. I am going to take the next few days being honest with myself and reflecting on why I feel this challenge is something I need to do. Anyone who starts on January 1st with me can include their reasons in the introduction (if they wish to). I have a big birthday this year so I know it will be a challenge on that day as-well as Christmas and New Year 2024 but I am determined.

I did it for the whole of 2023 and 7 months of 2022 so I just wanted to say all the best. You can do it!

Noalcohol2024 · 27/12/2023 21:27

Thanks @teaandtoastwithmarmite i did manage it about 10 years ago my DH is a great support as he will do it with me. I’m going to try my best.

I'm doing this at the moment. I made the decision to quit for 1 year & started in October. I see it as a project & I'm sort of data gathering to improve my relationship with booze (or maybe just never drink again, who knows?!) Good luck with it, you can definitely do it again. For what it's worth I am enjoying the freedom away from my wine witch!

Noalcohol2024 · 28/12/2023 07:46

@Sparky4084 thats a good idea seeing it as a project and doing it before Christmas is such an achievement.

I have some life goals I would like to achieve in my fifties which is why I have chosen to do it now. I feel like drinking alcohol regularly is a reward but as the years are now going by so quickly I can see it’s stopping me from moving forward as it gives me a false sense of contentment.

I am from a family of functioning alcoholics and alcohol has always been a big part of family life since I was a child.

Thankfully, my own adult child does not drink alcohol much as his priorities are his health. He’s not drank once with us over Christmas and we’ve never made him feel like he needs to drink alcohol to enjoy himself.

I’ve woken up thinking to myself why not just start today as I had heartburn in the night however, the start date is January 1st 2024 as agreed with my husband. I will be mindful of how the next few days drinking alcohol makes me feel.

We don’t get hammered anymore and we are in bed most nights by 10pm even on NYE it’s just alcohol is a big part of all celebrations and now I am getting older I find myself thinking maybe there is a different way to live my life.

Project No Alcohol 2024 it is and I may video document it too.

Thanks for the idea 💡 @Sparky4084 keep me updated with your no alcohol project too.

I would like to join please. I've always had wine at least 3-4 times a week but as a HCP I know this is bad. I've worked with alcoholic patients and I think I need to protect myself and my family now from becoming further down the slipping slope.

FajitaFriday · 28/12/2023 10:09

I’m in 👋🏻 well, Day 1 was yesterday after a nightmare Christmas of binging, no idea what I’ve said/done, embarrassing myself, relationship on the brink… less said about that the better, but I am committed to that Day 1 being my last Day 1 (I’ve had dozens) I don’t have any RL support so you may spot me popping up all over these threads 🙂

Noalcohol2024 · 28/12/2023 11:47

@FajitaFriday and @hashbrownsandwich so glad I have some more companions who are doing this challenge with me.

Hi all, not sure if Im committing to a full year but I definitely need to reset my relationship with booze, so hoping for 3 months.
I have also had a Christmas of binging & have been at least tipsy, if not drunk, every day for the last 2 months. Just writing that down is abit scary & eye opening!
1st Jan start for me too!

thatwassociopathic · 28/12/2023 12:33

Yea! I turned 40 in September and would have ideally started then but there were so many things happening it wasn't realistic. I'm not badly behaved but drink too much too often. I've regretted every time I've been drunk for a long time now, I've got things I want to achieve and that sluggish feeling that lingers for days holds me back. Fitness goals, family goals, life goals, all more achievable alcohol free. Here we go!!

thatwassociopathic · 28/12/2023 12:34

Also thinking I might start on the 31st so I'm fresh on NYD

MalcolmTuckersDisdainfulSneer · 28/12/2023 12:54

Another just turned 40 one here, who'd like to join!

I have to confess that I joined one of these last year and fell off quite early on 😬. Shall give it a good go though. There are too many big boozers in my family - it's really put me off.

starlight2kk · 28/12/2023 13:02

I would definitely like to join please Smile

AthenaWhite · 28/12/2023 14:00

I've almost completed a dry 2023. Started in January and just kept going. It's been hard in places but no longer. I really recommend Alcohol Explained by William Porter and

Even on tough days I've realized that you never regret not drinking.

I started on Boxing Day last year and am so happy I did. Life is so much better for me AF thankfully - I really thought I’d miss it but after the first month or to I really didn’t. I’ve been to a school reunion, a wedding, a christening and a funeral plus 2 holidays and of course Christmas and last new year. All better than I could have ever dreamed!

Wineisnottheanswer · 29/12/2023 06:21

Yes need to have a total reset

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/12/2023 06:40

I’d love to do this, previously I’ve done dry months but never more than a month/5 weeks. This year I’m starting with dry Jan and I’d like to do 100days as my first goal. It’s hard because dh will try dry Jan but won’t go further- neither of us are alcoholic but I definitely feel I’m drinking too much for me and it affects my sleep and how I feel generally, whereas dh doesn’t. We reach a point where I want to continue stopping and he wants to resume, which is usually the time where I start finding it very difficult

TeeNoG · 29/12/2023 07:53

I will join please. I did 2 years sober between 2019 and 2021, but since then have dipped in and out of 'moderation'. Sober is definitely better for me and so I reset my sober clock on Boxing Day - will be great to do it with others and have some support 🙂

Jeffsmeffsmiff · 29/12/2023 08:52

Id like to join too please. I'm doing 100 days at the moment - on day 15 right now. My plan was to stop for that long and hopefully reset my habits but I'm thinking more and more that I need more than a reset. Alcohol doesn't really do anything positive for us does it?
I come from a family of alcoholics sadly. 1 parent died of alcoholism, actually during their liver transplant operation, and the other parent is a functioning alcoholic. I just don't want to follow on that path.
This was my first sober Christmas and it was great.
DH doesn't really drink much at all and can't really understand why I am stopping. He says why don't you just drink on special occasions - which is what he does. But it just doesn't really work like that for me. And when I do drink I have no off switch.

Hepzibar · 29/12/2023 13:05

I'm in.

Did Dry January in 2020 and managed 2 and half years. Started with the odd glass of wine on holiday in the summer and it's escalated almost back to previous levels!

I've put on weight, skin deteriorating and energy levels are poor.

I feel much better AF.

Got half a bottle of wine which I'll finish tonight and then I'm on it.

BTW - I hoping the DJ thread the first time and the support was amazing and definitely helped

Noalcohol2024 · 29/12/2023 14:24

Welcome all future AF 2024 challengers. I’ll list everyone’s names on 1st January 2024. For those that start earlier good luck 🤞 .

houseplanting · 29/12/2023 14:47

Add me too please! Many of these posts resonate and I'm def up for dry January. Could do with some support!

Sparky4084 · 29/12/2023 16:53

Thanks @Noalcohol2024 This is turning into a nice little community! Good luck everyone.
I followed the suggestion of another poster here to buy a wall planner & some stickers & I mark off every day.
Started this in August, green for no drinks, orange for planned drinks & red unplanned. At that point I was trying to moderate & noticed it wasn't working pretty quickly, with several reds!
So, in October I went booze free, approaching 90 days & it's looking great.
I'm really happy I saw that post & went with it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/12/2023 23:08

This is awesome- can I join in in solidarity and also to keep me going through another year? I was part of a group when I first gave up and it was so helpful. I also saved £1 a week for every week I didn't drink to keep me going

BraveMaeve · 29/12/2023 23:31

I'm considering this, I had a few long-ish spells AF this year but always go back and end up at the same level as before pretty much. I manage more AF days but on the days when I do drink it's creeping up.

I really like the idea of seeing it as a project and collecting data to see how different I feel!

Bittercup · 30/12/2023 11:23

I would like to join please. I'm starting to feel like the only way to control my drinking is to stop completely.

My first goal is Dry January and then Lent (plus the bit in between), and onwards from there.

Wishing everyone luck Flowers
