Dry January 2022

Did Dry January this year and we had an amazing little support group going on here and I wondered if anyone cared to join me next year? This time I'm hoping to stay dry longer - 100 days - but will see how January goes first. I don't want to set myself up to fail.

Who's with me?

I’m joining in , I do drink too much , once I start a bottle of wine , it’s so easy to just carry on ( and on .. ) I have a high threshold and don’t get drunk , but it’s got to stop
Normally have 3 days a week alcohol free , it’s the weekends which are the issue
We tried dry November , managed about 10 days , but watching Strictly with a bag of Revels was not good 😫

I’ve got Catherine Grey’s book “ the unexpected joy of being sober “ which I recommend highly , but I’d like recommendations of other quit lit please

I'm in, my first Dry January. I don't drink a lot but I do drink every evening and really need to break that habit.

@H1Drangea I'm reading a book called this naked mind: control alcohol by Annie grace.

I'm in! Drinking far too much wine these past few months! I'd also like to give up completely.

Morning all! Bouncing into Day 2.

Love the £££ saved @gerispringer I find that so motivating! During covid times we have really limited our pub and restaurant visits, but even so I worked out I am spending about £60.00 a week on alcohol (I am the only person who drinks). In more normal times I can add probably £40 to that each weekend. So i am going to save a portion of those savings and maybe try and take the Dcs away for a weekend somewhere. (I am hoping to do more than Dry Jan as well, but will start with DJ).

It;s funny also-I stopped going to the stables for a lesson every week because at £25.00 (back then) I thought it was too expensive! Yet i am literally chucking more than that down the loo every week in wine. Something that makes me bloated and depressed. very odd.

Hello everyone, can I join in? I have a huge problem with alcohol and can't stay more than a day or two dry without caving. I really need to do this as I know alcohol will kill me if I keep going. Some support on the journey would be fantastic. Day 2 for me Smile

Well done @FoxglovesandBees

I’m day 4 here and I slept until 9.30 this morning which is most unlike me!
My resting heart rate has risen which is is a bit confusing?? Does anyone know why this would be?

Koko everyone xx

@Upyouranty maybe it's anxiety or your body working hard to get rid of the toxins. Day 3 here and I'm so anxious and depressed I can't bear it. I'm shaking not because of alcohol I don't think. Just so on edge and even though I took nytol last night I couldn't sleep.

I’m going to join in this year. January always such a depressing month it will be nice to feel like I’m achieving something and a great way to start the year off. Also a good way to kick off a general health boost, might go longer, will be great to see how far I get and how i feel after 31 days

@teaandtoastwithmarmite
Interesting - unbelievable what alcohol does to our body and mind.
My dh commented the other day about how horrified I was that he was having a SECOND Diet Coke 😱, and how bad it is for you, yet I’m perfectly happy to glug a bottle of wine and the rest without thought.
(My words not his!)

We normalize it.

I hope you feel better soon Flowers you can do it x

@FoxglovesandBees you sound like me. Do you want to see if Dry January resets things for you or try to stop completely?

And well done on day 2 😊

Yes, I would like to join in! My drinking is heavier than ever - not every day but when I do, a bottle of wine isn't enough these days!

@MyGhastIsFlabbered thanks for starting the thread. Please may I join up all?

I have an increasingly uneasy relationship with alcohol. I have cut right back (and did a couple of dry months earlier this year), and only drank 15 units in total (when socialising out and about) from the beginning of October to Christmas Eve. I'm having a couple of drinks a day (two is really my maximum these days) over Christmas and will be embracing Dry January at the weekend.

I have found having a 0% beer if I feel the need for a drink works really well.

I also find about day 3 my anxiety and depression goes through the roof. That then triggers me to drink again. Ironically I usually get depressed about stupid things I have said while drinking. Hmm

Hello everyone

You can probably guess from my user name that I enjoy wine! I’m also a big fan of gin and recently discovered Negronis. However, I can’t moderate and once the wine bottle is open then it tends to get finished.

My drinking went up in lockdown 3 this year and never really came back down Blush. I’d like to give DJ a go but won’t start until I go back to work on 4th, so will add on 3 days at end.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Alternatives - I like am AF beer and also two pretend spirits. Pentire and MotherRoot are both excellent but £££ for non booze so I try to ration them. I’m still in the mindset of thinking 25 quid for a bottle of non alcoholic drink is loads and I could have a bottle of Tanqueray for that!

Just tried soho juice mint lemon and lime flavour the other night and it was so good and refreshing!!!! I ordered some so it will be my drink of choice for dry Jan when I need something special. Won’t drink daily as don’t want the habit of drinking juice. But once in a while as a treat yes.

I’m in! Definitely need a break from drinking along with the healthy eating kick I’ve already started. Being realistic that I will have a drink on NYE, but that’s it for a while I hope.

Well done those who have started early. I will drink on New Year’s Eve but I am so ready for a good long break now. I’m in the contemplating going through February as well camp, but we’ll see, it seems a bit presumptuous when I haven’t even started January yet.

@Upyouranty totally hit the nail on the head. I get anxiety but drinking makes it worse and the anxiety is usually about something I've done whilst drinking. Then o drink to prove (to myself) I don't have a drink problem. I've been reading a book called naked mind and it says that alcohol is a total poison and why are we ok with putting it in our bodies
