Drinking WAY too much and need to detox - any shared experiences?

I'm a daily drinker and have been for absolutely years. Since the start of lockdown 1 I've gone from drinking around half a bottle of wine or a couple of beers a day to now drinking 1/4 bottle of spirits, a bottle of wine and maybe also a few beers. Because I drink all the time, I don't get drunk any more, it's a steady drip feed of alcohol through the day. My sleep is appalling; up around 4/5 am after 3 hours sleep and then I need to have my first drink to steady the withdrawal.

I'm supposed to be working from home but I'm really beginning to fail in that and I am desperate to stop. I stopped in February 2019 for 3 months - it was sort of enforced as I was very unwell and in hospital for 3 weeks with an ovarian abscess. I felt so much better. Since then it crept up from a beer at the end of the day to where I am now.

I've spoken to my GP and been put in contact with my local drug and alcohol service as I'm drinking too much to safely stop on my own now. I'm scheduled to do a community detox on February 8th and I wondered if anybody here has done this and what it's like? I'm so nervous about it.

Morning op, how is it going? Plenty of rest and not too uncomfortable I hope...
Here to offer you and hand hold, a virtual cheer or a brow mop. X

I hope you got some rest. What a brave thing to share and write about. Wishing you all the best.

Thanks everyone. I slept til 7am - first time in months I haven’t been up at 3am. Now just feel so spaced out and have to go for next meds at 9am. But hey - over 24 hours since last alcohol, that hasn’t happened for years. xxx

Fab news OP! Well done! So good that you've slept.

TimeToStop · 09/02/2021 14:10

I’ve been asleep pretty much all of today - going to attempt to watch a movie with my daughter now and actually leave the bed!

@TimeToStop does your daughter understand. If so that is amazing. Am so happy for you

TimeToStop · 09/02/2021 14:33

My daughter is 18.5 so I have talked to her about it. She was very upset that she hadn’t realised how bad it had got but I explained it was nothing to do with her etc. Just crept up on me xxx

BillieSpain · 10/02/2021 20:00

Yes, hope you're feeling well OP

Blessex · 11/02/2021 07:59

Checking in @TimeToStop. Hope all ok.

TimeToStop · 11/02/2021 15:45

Thank you all. I'm hanging in - I seem to be asleep almost constantly which is quite strange. But the meds are being reduced now day by day. I think Tuesday was the worst day by far. Today I'm still quite shaky and definite cravings for alcohol, which I'm fielding so far with M&S jelly fruits. But I've slept for three nights until 7.30am which is amazing. xxx

@TimeToStop ah happy to hear from you! It’s good that your body is resting. Happy you seem to be through the worst. Will take a bit for your body to re-find it’s equilibrium and balance again. But it will!

Hangingover · 11/02/2021 16:11

Just popping in to wish you well and add that SMART zoom meetings are great. I'm 8 months sober now and they've really helped me. I was too scared to do AA lol

TimeToStop · 11/02/2021 16:45

Hangingover what are SMART meetings?

JCBluebell · 11/02/2021 18:22

Great to hear you're still hanging in there OP. And the sleeping will help you so much. Keep on keeping on.

TimeToStop · 11/02/2021 19:18

4th day no alcohol. Each day so far has brought different challenges for sure. My hands are still pretty shaky, wondering when that will stop ...
