What is covid going to do to education this year?

We are already multiple teachers down, with this new strain. It is only the first week. What is going to happen? I would like to hope it goes around once, and then we get our balance back, but if it keeps mutating and going around again and again, schools are like petri dishes.

I didn’t think that anyone was bothering with covid- 19 testing anymore ( except those working in health and social care ). I know there’s no recommendation to test at dc s school so I imagine it won’t have much impact in his school tbh.

well, I tested because I am immunocompromised, but in a sense it doesn't make much different if you test or not, multiple staff are too ill to work. We had a staff training day on Friday, and people started becoming ill Sunday/Monday/Tuesday

Day one or two for students, maybe, but not staff

We seem to get it on a cycle of the new major variants so I'm going with we all get it before October, waste October holiday and then be fine until the next round. The last one was very much a sleepy 24-48hr fever with a headache

Staff have been in for a week. Lots aren't testing but they're ill and unable to come to school ot doesn't matter what you call a virus of ot makes you ill you can't teach and that'll have an impact

I don't think it will be any different to last year.
Odd staff member off, odd children off.
Even when bubbles first stopped and we mixed we only had 1 or 2 staff members off at a time.
The worst was bubbles and everyone having to be off for a fortnight, absolute nightmare getting the curriculum covered.
A few days of a supply teacher or HLTA isn't that disruptive really. It's not going to be the same teacher off every other week

I hope you are right - we have already had to postpone the start date for one year group. But hopefully, it will only go around once, not every 3 months

nothing. people get ill. people get better. as it always has been.

Carlessly · 05/09/2023 18:45

@Timeless23 my DC have been back in school 2 weeks and 2 days now. Well, DD hasn't technically as she's been off ill since Thursday.
I imagine it will come in waves and they'll cover as best as they can. DD's had all the work she's missed sent home and it's piling up on the side as she's too ill to do any.

NotFastButFurious · 05/09/2023 18:48

@Timeless23 Scotland have been back for weeks! It’s at least week 4 for that state schools.

This.
Illness is not a new thing. Colds, flus, stomach bugs etc etc.
Some people will be I’ll, some people won’t be. We cover where we need to and make the best of it.

tinytemper66 · 05/09/2023 18:53

I timed it so I had it in the holidays 😊

Carlessly · 05/09/2023 18:58

Actually they've been back 3 weeks and 2 days!

Lovemusic82 · 05/09/2023 19:07

You’re always going to get the ‘why are people testing?’ people commenting on these covid threads. I test because I am in contact with vulnerable people, a lot of teachers and school staff probably test for the same reason? I have friends who work in care homes who are being hugely effected at the moment.

I had covid a couple weeks ago, 4th time I have had it and possibly the worst. I was unable to leave the house for 5 days, body aches, dry cough, awful head aches and high temperature, I have heard lots of people are experiencing the same so I am guessing a lot of people will be needing time off work even though they no longer have to isolate?

toomuchlaundry · 05/09/2023 20:05

They are bringing the vaccination program forward for elderly and vulnerable.

I know we have other illnesses floating around, but I know very few people who have ever had flu, never mind multiple times. COVID is a persistent bugger

IDugAnotherHole · 05/09/2023 20:19

For those that test because they are in contact with immuno suppressed people etc, does knowing you DON'T have covid, but have symptoms which caused you to test for it, alter your behaviour with regard to those people? I.e. do you get a negative test for covid while you have a cold or other virus and just think 'oh well, it's fine to be around Granny as it's not covid'?

Otherwise I'm curious as to why you would test. And I'd think if they were immuno compromised, you shouldn't be around them if you have any sort of virus, covid or not?

Cheeseandlobster · 05/09/2023 20:28

I hide the covid thread for a reason and here you are posting in chat 🙄

Greyfoot · 05/09/2023 20:48

I know 8 people off work with it currently, one of them is a teacher.

The current cases haven't been contracted in School but they will spread through them quickly.

There have been so many big gatherings this summer, I was at a wedding this weekend and a festival last, people are returning to schools already infected. Plus a poor summer means people have been trying to keep children entertained at indoor attractions.

People I know who have it are really quite ill, that's why they've tested. I think people feel more able to phone in sick with covid than with cold symptoms, which is what they have, but they're quite poorly with it. There also seems to be some sickness with this strain?

Greyfoot · 05/09/2023 20:58

I don't know. Covid seems to be more catchy and make a higher proportion of people ill for longer. If a cold goes through a school you might get 5% people ill enough to need a few days off, which is hard to manage, can be done, but will affect whats delivered to children.
If that becomes 20 or 30% and they need 2 weeks could schools really cover well enough to keep students safe, let alone educated?

Government just announced they are upping testing due to the new strain and waning immunity.

TheMousePipes · 05/09/2023 21:02

I did well this year, I decided to get it the week before we went back to school so I could spend my own time feeling like white and not compromise any educational shizzle.

Ylvamoon · 05/09/2023 21:03

🤷🏽‍♀️
We deal with it the same way as we do with the flu- and norovirus.
