OK mag: Jade "memorial issue" complete with year of death on front cover......how tasteless is this??

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 18/03/2009 12:54

I mean, in the context of producing a memorial issue before the poor woman has even passed away? Seems like a pathetic attempt to continue to be "first with the news".

I have been through the experience of watching and waiting for death of a loved one from cancer. It can be a protracted and painfully long process - even when the doctors do say there are only "days left" it can turn out to be longer.

Who do they think they are appealing to with this awful "scoop"??

It's not all about Jade - they just seem to have devoted a large amount of the magazine to her. Which they do A LOT with lots of celebrities or with lots of events (ie wedding specials etc).

I imagine they have paid her somehow. The rest of th magazine is the same as it is every week and Nicole Richie looks very happy on discovering she is pregnant for a second time.

the bbc news story says 'No complaints had been received directly from the public, the publication added' but people on here were emailing complaints to the magazine last night

wannaBe · 18/03/2009 15:02

you know what no, I don't think she should be able to do what she wants any more, not even "for her boys".

There are hundreds and thousands of cancer sufferers in this country, some who may survive, and some who may not. And I don't think that they need to essentially be given a blow by blow account of how they are going to die if/when the time comes, because that is what is currently happening in the media.

There comes a point at which the dying wishes of one person need to be measured against the feelings of other people, and IMO a line has been crossed. It needs to stop.

SobranieCocktail · 18/03/2009 15:02

Christ this is quite an unpleasant thread. I very much doubt Jade Goody is courting the press or whipping up a media frenzy right now as she is most likely barely conscious. But even if she were, that is entirely her choice. It amazes me how so many posters are eager to interpret this "story" in the most cynical manner.

wasabipeanut · 18/03/2009 15:09

I saw this ad and thought it was staggeringly tasteless given that she isn't actually dead.

But then, I wouldn't expect anything better from OK which, along with its ilk, I hate with a passion that is difficult to convey.

Enough now.

Please.

High-fives Wannabe.

Agree entirely with this.

solidgoldbrass · 18/03/2009 15:46

Yes I think many of the people who are reacting with disgust or 'cynicism' to the Goodyfest are those who have cancer or are currently engaged in caring for a terminal patient, or lost someone to cancer: it's not ;comforting' or 'inspiring' to everyone to have this kind of tube-by-tube account of the fate of an individual one doesn't necessarily care about.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 18/03/2009 15:53

Memorial issue 1981-2009, what if she rallies and makes it to 2010? . Absofuckinglutely bizzare.

MannyMoeAndJack · 18/03/2009 15:58

I think Jade probably considers this 'memorial' issue flattering rather than offensive (even if it does include her year of death). And if she rallies and lives beyond 2009, then I guess there will be a need for a part II

beanieb · 18/03/2009 15:58

"but people on here were emailing complaints to the magazine last night "

why?!?

beanieb · 18/03/2009 16:01

no one knows what Jade thinks! just because you think she thinks something doesn't make it true!

why do you all even care so much? You all hate these kinds of magazines, you all dislike Jade Goody and the action she has taken in recent months. WHY do you waste so much time getting your knickers in a twist about it!?

MannyMoeAndJack · 18/03/2009 16:02

My thinking makes it true for me - stuff you!

You care enough to contribute your post!

KayHarkersHeartBelongsToTen · 18/03/2009 16:07

I think it's because it really is being shoved in people's faces. At first, it was ok, because it was having a good effect with the smear test thing - I'm having my first for a while next week.

But now, when I am already dealing with this with friends, and have dealt with it a number of times in the past, not least the day to day nursing of my own mother, I don't need to be constantly reminded of every last thing whenever I go to the supermarket or turn on the television.

Not for the first time, I am in agreement with SGB.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 18/03/2009 16:08

That's a bit strong beanieb, why does anyone on here bother posting about anything?

Because we have opinions and we have nothing better to do I guess.

Haribosmummy · 18/03/2009 16:08

You know, I read the response from JG's family, and it seems they are totally happy with the magazine running the 'tribute'...

What I find a little distasteful is that I'm sure the editors etc., are rushing to get this out and sold, because one way or another JG is going to be 'old news' very shortly.

I don't really like what's happening (but only because I'd hate to think of anyone giving up hope - my mum was in JG's position 30+ years ago and IS STILL HERE) but what she's doing isn't ilegal and she's not being underhand or manipulative (she's been totally up front about her motives) so, knowing all that, if people want to read about it, then I guess it's their call to do so.

My sympathies are with her little boys. No matter what anyone thinks of your mum... well, she's your mum and they are going to miss having her there for them.

beanieb · 18/03/2009 16:17

Sorry amd just fed up of the usual anti-Jade Brigade.

solidgoldbrass · 18/03/2009 17:35

To find the whole thing a mixture of gross, mawkish and ludicrous isn;t to have feelings about Jade Goody ( I don't know her and don't really give a toss about what happens to her apart from vaguely hoping she stays alive purely to fuck OK magazine off)- it's an observation on a cultural phenomenon.

southeastastra · 18/03/2009 17:36

it's like monty python, i'm not dead yet, i'm getting better

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 18/03/2009 20:59

Bloody hell......wasn't expecting such a massive response already to this thread.

I think there is absolute validity in everyones' views so far. It is such an emotive subject and of course it affects people in different ways.

To get back to my OP (rather than the rights and wrongs of selling your experiences of illness to the papers), I agree that those "final moments" of cancer can last for much longer than people may think. My beautiful MIL was in this "sleeping" state for the best part of 4 months.

Whilst JG did make the decision to sell her story.....and whilst I am sure she is not in a place where she gives a toss quite frankly about what is written about her now.....I just find it absolutely vile that the editor of OK mag could even contemplate putting a "year of death" on their front cover of someone who is still living and breathing.

OP posts:
beanieb · 18/03/2009 22:45

that is quite foul. I wonder if when they went to press (last week?) they really thought she would have died by now?

My work mate's step mum took 10 months to die from her cancer
