Her cancer has spread.

I did wonder about that too.

I've had the abormal cells removed twice before my diagnosis. The first time was excruciating and even codeine wouldn't help after. Second time I had painkillers before procedure and it was just like period pain for a few hours.

Guadalupe · 04/02/2009 21:04

Could be, Sobranie.

Sidge · 04/02/2009 21:06

Poor Jade, that is so sad

Can I just remind women though that the smear programme is a cervical screening programme. It is a preventative public health service. That means that you will be routinely invited every 3 years for a smear to check the status of your cervix - it is only a 'snapshot' of your cervix on that day. So if you have any concerning symptoms such as unusual vaginal discharge, bleeding between periods or after sex or anything else that worries you, you are entitled to a smear AT ANY TIME as it would be clinically indicated and NOT a part of the routine screening programme.

So don't just rely on being called for your smears, be alert to any strange or worrying symptoms and seek medical help ASAP. If your GP won't take you seriously, or dismisses you because you had a normal smear a year ago, then see another GP.

Hello, Sidge. I remember you helping me on my pre-op 'absolutely terrified' thread! I was MrsCarrot then.

Very good advice.

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 21:12

I also remember J Goody saying she had her abnormal cells "burnt" several times before but they kept coming back.

The problem with burning (or freezing, really) the dysplasia is that you can't then do a biopsy and see if all of the affected area was taken out.

With LEEP, a cone shaped piece is cut out and sent for biopsy. If all outside surface of the cone is normal cells, then the entire dysplasia has been taken out and there is over 90% chance that it will not come back.

If you burn (or freeze) the area, it looks done but who knows if all abnormal cells were dealt with?

Guadalupe · 04/02/2009 21:14

Is that the old way then, the burning? I had leep both times, first one in 2003 I think.

I suppose you can't test the sample to see if there are clear margins with burning.

Sidge · 04/02/2009 21:15

Hello Guadalupe, how are you doing now?

I remember that thread - all about pillows wasn't it?

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 21:16

Sobranie - The problem with cervical dysplasia (precancerous cells on the cervix) is that there are no symptoms. Hence the need for smear tests. They just keep quietly changing.

That is why I was about Jade Goody somehow discovering precancerous cells on the cervix before she was even sexually active, and having an operation for it when she was a virgin.

Guadalupe · 04/02/2009 21:16

Although, with the rare type that I was diagnosed with after the second loop, even if there were clear margins you couldn't garuntee it was gone because it can be multifocal.

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 21:17

The reason why you can't do a biopsy after burning/freezing is that there is no sample to test. You burn the area and that is it. No piece is cut out so nothing to biopsy.

Guadalupe · 04/02/2009 21:18

I'm doing okay thanks, Sidge. There was a lot of pillow talk, expat was very clear about what I would need and that was pillows and a kettle iirc. The thread was a great help.

Sidge · 04/02/2009 21:22

Glad you're doing OK Guadalupe, didn't realise you were MrsCarrot. I always recommend people take pillows to hospital, there are never enough!

Was it you recommding pillows? It's a bit of a blur now. It was a good tip, I was very comfy, well comfier anyway!

Guadalupe · 04/02/2009 21:26

Yes, please do, Korma. One good thing that came out of me getting ill was that most of my friends got up to date with their smears.

There is one who still desists but I am working on her.

Sidge · 04/02/2009 21:36

I think a few of us were the pillow-recommenders!

Korma - please have your smear. It takes just moments and is so worth doing.

Caz10 · 04/02/2009 21:41

I got my smear reminder in the post today actually.
It says every 3 years; I had my 6 week check just over 1 yr ago, but I'm guessing this has come out because it's 3yrs since my last non-pregnancy related one?

Anyway - is every 3 years often enough? From what I'm reading here it doesn't sound like it, but it seems to be NHS policy?

Should we be actively asking for annual ones?

verygreenlawn · 04/02/2009 21:44

Oh my God I just read some of the comments on the Sun website AuntieMaggie linked to about Jade's illness (suggesting she deserved it/had made it up). How sad that people felt that way. Maybe some still do? I can't think of anyone that would deserve such a terrible situation, especially a mum to such young babies

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/02/2009 21:44

When I was on the pill in my early teens (due to hormonal bad period stuff), I was told I had to have smears done regularly.

ilove · 04/02/2009 22:22

I had a hysterectomy 18 months ago because of recurrent pre-cancerous cells that then turned very nasty, and cycts within my uterus that would have been cancerous within 5 years.

I'm in my 30's and it's the best decision I ever made.

I started bleeding after sex when on holiday in June 06, and had the hysterctomy in July 07.

Sexually active for 20 years with 2 partners

saggyhairyarse · 04/02/2009 22:25

I saw the Sun headline today but couldn't read it as it is just too horrible.

As a parent toyougn children, I really feel for Jade. A Mum from school died just before Christmas and 'stories' like these remind you of your own mortality.

I just hope that however long Jade has, she is pain free and can enjoy her time with her boys.
