Goodness how awful for her and her boys

To the people who say she shouldn't talk about it (on the DM comments), how many of us are now booking smear tests? It's a good thing she is talking about her cancer, as it's shocking a lot of women into action.

Maveta · 04/02/2009 09:35

In an interview I read with her she described 'black tar like stuff dripping out of her when she went to the loo - and thinking 'this can't be right'' so yes I think she had symptoms for quite a while.

I feel so so sad for her and her family, it does bring it home. I am evangelical about smears and cannot understand how anyone can put them off. I contracted HPV at some point in my late teens/early twenties and had abnormal smears from about 22 yrs old eventually got a biopsy and found CIN I cells. That was in 2001 and have since had annual smears. Had about 3 clear smears now (I'm 31 now) but I keep on top of it.

Maveta · 04/02/2009 09:37

I should add.. when I moved to spain in 2003 and tried to organise my smears on the national health the waiting list was about 4 months!! I have gone private for them ever since and would find the money for them from wherever I had to.

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 09:38

Are you a doctor? What do you mean by "I've seen women..."?

I'm interested because I had LEEP surgery following a bad smear and CIN III biopsy result. In all my reading since then, I've never seen anyone claim it is even possible to go from zero to full blown cervical cancer in under a year

Could you link to some research?

PuzzleRocks · 04/02/2009 09:39

VS that's shocking, my previous LHA offered them within 2 years of you becoming sexually active whether that be 14 or 40.

Carmenere · 04/02/2009 09:39

I have to say that I felt for her when I read about it this morning, particularly as the people she has supporting her are her 21 yr old jailbird boyfriend (who tbh seems dim to say the least) and her mum Jackie who seems unstable at the best of times. I kind of wish there was a grown up in the scenario to look after her. In fact that bloodsucking leach Max Clifford could repay some of the Karma he has used up by profiteering off her sad life by looking after her now.

VictorianSqualor · 04/02/2009 09:42

One person she had supporting her died recently too.

Mamazon · 04/02/2009 09:43

I have had quite a lot of treatment for positive smear tests and early cancer cells of the cervix.

i would say that if she has ignored positive smear results in teh past then this is almost certainly because of that.

having a smear is VITAL! yes its uncomfortable but its a lot easier than DEATH!

if you haven't had one then please phpne your GP now

This is desperately sad. As Belgianbun says, every mothers nightmare.

If any good can come of this it will be that it may make younger women more vigilant about smears. .

lisalisa · 04/02/2009 09:47

That is so very sad. Poor poor woman. Cancer is one disease that I just wish they would find a once and for all cure for.

Cote - I'm a physicist involved in the treatment of women with invasive cervical cancer, and am in close contact with a lot of oncologists working in this field as I teach them. I am involved heavily with one centre where the average age of their patients with serious, invasive cervical cancer is 25.

I'll Pubmed later, but I know that the centre in question have a paper in preparation discussing the change they have seen in the presentation of their cervix patients

snice · 04/02/2009 09:59

I am off to the kitchen to retrieve the smear appointment letter from the bottom of the "must sort out pile".

This poor woman-I think she has been used up and spat out by the media and has not had the basic intelligence to deal with it.

mamadiva · 04/02/2009 10:02

I have to admit I did think it was all a publicity stunt to start based on the way it was so played out on TV when she found out. Now though I believe she is definately doing teh right thing playing it out to warn others.

Scares the crap out of me I'm 22 and never had a smear because people keep telling me how horrible they are but now I am going to book one for as soon as I can because wat's worse a few minutes of discomfort or a child without a mum?

My sympathies go to Jade and her family, must be horribl thinking the worst all the time. Carmenere agree she needs someone to look after er but Max Clifford has just fought of Prostat cancer don't really think he'll be up to looking after someone else.

OhHowMarvellous · 04/02/2009 10:03

She is so beautiful in that photograph with her son.

I don't know much about her, but it's awful to think she is having to go through this. Desperately sad.

Guadalupe · 04/02/2009 10:07

Cote - I have always had my smears and I was still diagnosed with stage 1 adenocarcinoma last May. I had had a normal smear 18 months previously.

There are some rarer types that progress quickly. It affects different cells. I don't know if Jade's is the same. I thought she had avoided the doctors because she was scared?

I feel so sorry for her and in turn so relived mine was found early. I didn't know my surgery would be curative for two weeks. That was the longest two weeks of my life.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 04/02/2009 10:11

Two threads on this topic, lets all move over here

ThePellyandMe · 04/02/2009 10:21

I was 3 years late for my smear due to 2 pregnancies in quick succession and I'd developed cervical cancer. No abnormal smears prior to that.

I did not have multiple partners at an early age, nor did I start having sex at an early age. In fact quite the opposite.

From what I have read the majority of women are exposed to the HPV virus within 6-12 months of becoming sexually active.

SobranieCocktail · 04/02/2009 11:48

ThePelly - is that true re: being exposed to the HPV virus within 6-12 months of becoming sexually active?

I really really hope they can effectively treat Jade Goody's cancer for as long as possible. My Mum has been living with an aggressive form of breat cancer for the last 10+ years, due to early intervention with Herceptin (she was lucky to have private health insurance). Maybe there are simoilar treatments for cervical cancer?

It's just such an appalling story, possibly made all the more shocking as it's been played out in the tabloids. I'm sure the people who said it was a publicity stunt feel terrible (and rightly so). It was an unforgivable accusation to have made.

ThePellyandMe · 04/02/2009 12:01

I think I heard that on the Radio SobranieCocktail They were debating the vaccine and Radio 2's Dr Jarvis said that is the case.

Cervical cancer is treatable with surgery if caught in the early stages, I think when it goes beyong the cervix, it becomes alot harder to treat.

I just really hope Jade Goody gets through this. Very, very sad for her and her children.

BabyBaby123 · 04/02/2009 14:20

poor jade.

hifi · 04/02/2009 14:48
