Gift for elderly lady, aimed at keeping her warm

MrAlyakhin · Today 06:46

It's my mum's birthday soon. She is always under dressed for the winter so she is always cold and I want to get her presents that keep her warm. I know she should wear more clothes but for whatever reason she doesn't. She's in her 80s so it's unlikely to change.

She has a heated blanket which we bought her a few years back and she does use it a lot. She also has an electric blanket for her bed. I've bought her gloves but I want more things to keep her warm at home.

I was wondering about a house coat but it would need to be 'stylish' if that's possible.

Has anyone found anything worth getting?

Just how elderly is your Mum? We are in our 70s but very active. Our heating isn’t working very well at the moment but hopefully it will be fixed next week. Forget woollen jumpers. Fleeces that we usually use for walking are keeping us warm. They wash and dry quickly too.

"Teddy bear" sheets and duvet cover are fluffy and make the bed much warmer with the trapped air.

Another vote for Uniqlo's Heattech range here. They now do cashmere blend tops which are very thin and would be a good warm base layer under other clothes, either polo or scoop-neck. They look and feel lovely (and I - a permanently cold person - plan on buying a few for myself).

I have this issue with my 80 something mum in her chilly house. I feel like I’ve bought her almost all of the things mentioned…but she hates anything that isn’t natural fibres. The heated gilet was a waste of £100, Uniqlo heat tech would never get out of the packet, heated throws are generally fleece so no good.

Older women can be very hard to please as they know exactly what they like, and frankly, have often already got two of them! Sometimes I look at the articles about gifting for more mature women and how delighted we’d be with all these little luxuries that we’d never buy ourselves (enough with the scarves already)…and it makes me wonder whether we’re just very good at faking. Orgasms, delight at our children’s artwork, gifts. Confused

Uniqlo heat tech tops/leggings or cashmere/lace thermal from Intimmissimi
Blanket from British Blanket Company - 100% wool, wide range of colours, very good quality; I have a couple on sofas and they’re lovely and cosy to sit under. They also do really lovely ponchos - not tried one but very tempted.

Agree with much of this.

Merino wool base layers sometimes suit those who only like natural fibres.

They are very soft.

M & S HEATGEN THERMALS are excellent! I wear their long sleeved top under shirts etc when it gets really cold, they make such a difference.

  • Husband has a heated vest/waistcoat thing for his motorbike which he swears by. I believe there's something similar that gardeners wear too. Heated socks also!
HoraceCope · Today 10:04

my dm just informed me she has found her bag of cashmere jumpers put away for the winter, so she is pleased.
purchased from charity shops,
can you try the same?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · Today 10:04

Not for wearing but flannelette/brushed cotton bedding? We have a few really nice gingham sets from Secret Linen Store and just got a lovely Laura Ashley one via John Lewis. So soft and cosy.

You can get battery powered heated gilets.

We got some of the Turtle Doves cashmere wrist warmers for my MIL and she loves them - wears them around the house a lot.

I have a couple of pairs and wear them a lot indoors too-and I’m not (that) old

@MrAlyakhin - would it not be best to ascertain what exactly is preventing her from dressing warmly enough for the weather. Is it a sensory or cognitive issue? Or is she genuinely unable to afford warm clothes? Or heating? Or is she using this as a way of communicating that she feels uncared for and wants more familial input in her life?

Because, nice as blankets and throws are, they do rather pre-suppose a sedentary or immobile lifestyle - when really she should be keeping as active as possible if she is able.

ILoveKits · Today 10:09

Perhaps missimg the point of the thread, but providing she isn't skint, is turning up the heating possibly the best solution? My mum's 90, the heating is set to 24.

Cookingdoesntgettougher · Today 10:13

Away from clothes hot water bottle. Due to disability I use a safer alternative microwave heat bag - there are all sorts of shapes. I have one when wfh, avoid trip over a blanket.

Lots of outlets are now selling a Snug Scarf which is like a faux fur tippet that goes round your neck - you charge it up and it stays warm for about 6 hours.

Mischance · Today 10:30

Look on amazon - much cheaper. I have bought one and paid over the odds - wish I had tried amazon foist.

Haha I don’t get cold myself but my sister does and she’s often wearing hers around the house as well - great for anyone who gets cold extremities!
