Is my 12yo bedtime too early?
she gets home from school at 4.20
we have dinner 6.45
up the stairs at 8.00
asleep by 9.00 or 9.30 depending on the day as sometimes she has clubs

That's when I go to bed too and I'm 34. Sounds fine to me but you didn't say what time she gets up.

TheJoyousBiscuit · Yesterday 07:27

Ah sorry! Gets up for school at 7.00

Mine is y8 and was 9.30 bed last year but it’s crept up to 10 this year. Think they then fall asleep pretty quickly. Needs to be up by 7.10, sometimes needs waking. Doesn’t seem
too tired but occasionally we insist on an earlier night.

My 12 year old goes to bed at 9-9.30pm. Gets up at 7.30am for school.

EmmaB1309 · Yesterday 13:06

i think it sounds ok. Possibly a little early, but all kids are different and if she needs it then it’s not wrong! I think my dd (same age) could do with an earlier bedtime but she’s so knackered at the end of the school day she has a little kip on the couch for half an hour after school! This means she isn’t ready to sleep until after 10pm. She has to get up at 7 and I do feel she is tired. I try to encourage her to keep busy and not have that little nap, but she’s a misery guts in the evening without it! Bit of a vicious cycle. She does enjoy long lie ins at the weekend.

Farr85 · Yesterday 13:16

My girl just turned 12 and goes up around the same time. Sometimes she doesn't even manage to stay awake until 9pm.

AmusedMember · Yesterday 13:25

My son is 12 and goes to bed at 8.30! We've tried later and after a week he is an absolute misery to be around, he just can't cope and needs alot of sleep apparently!! Really does depend on the child?

Sdpbody · Yesterday 13:32

I was in bed for 7:30/8pm at that age! We didn't do any clubs and I had a much younger brother who also went to bed early!

I still need a lot of sleep and routinely need 9 hours a night. I feel awful on less.

Whatthechicken · Yesterday 13:41

That's the exact bedtime for my nearly 12 y/o. Up to room at 8pm, an hour to wind down in bedroom, asleep 9/9:30. He loves his sleep though.

Navyontop · Yesterday 14:00

I go to bed at 9.30 and I’m 42 😂

bardabunga · Yesterday 14:09

@TheJoyousBiscuit Does she take herself upstairs at 8pm unbidden, or do you tell her it's bedtime and send her up?

Kirbert2 · Yesterday 14:13

Mine will be 11 next month (Year 6) and goes to bed at 10.

popsickle555 · Yesterday 14:52

Mine (almost 12 but year 7) is in bed by 8.45 now but up at 6.30am. Weekends later…

14 almost 15 year old also up at 6.30am but goes to bed at 10-10.30 In the week.

Chilly80 · Yesterday 15:06

I think by then it depends on the child. My 10 year old goes later than that but gets up before 7 half the time on his own

middleagedandinarage · Yesterday 15:13

Sounds fine. How does she cope with that? Is she taking a long time to fall asleep or waking really early? If so I'd put bedtime back a little. If she's really tired by then and struggling to get up in the morning then take bedtime forward a little.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · Yesterday 15:17

Mines 13 and a half and still pisses about having showers at 10. She’s devices off at 9.30 but keeps dragging it out so if you don’t supervise she will start messing about sorting her room out or something. That said she gets up and out for school by 7.45 every morning and is never late.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · Yesterday 15:18

I try and go to sleep for 10.30 so it’s annoying 😂

MinnieMountain · Yesterday 15:20

Our (just) 13yo goes up no later than 9pm, lights off by 9:45.

He still wants a bedtime story most nights. That's 7.45-8.15 as I'm not willing to read aloud any later. He often comes down again after that.

Wakes up at 6.30 on school days, although he has time to get up later.

ColdWaterDipper · Yesterday 16:04

If she’s falling asleep easily and able to wake up ok in the morning then it’s probably right for her. My eldest needed a similar amount of sleep at that age but my youngest is 12 now and rarely gets that much, and doesn’t seem to need it. He is out training every night at swim club, rugby, athletics or triathlon and so he doesn’t tend to get in until anywhere between 8:30 and 9:30pm depending on the night. He’ll then generally faff about a bit but is usually in bed and lights off by 9:30/10pm. He doesn’t have any devices anyway, so that’s not an issue, and he is tired after training but wakes up easily at 6:30am every morning to go for a quick run / gym and get ready for school.

Dreamerinme · Yesterday 16:10

DS (almost 12) goes upstairs at 8pm, asleep by 8.30-9pm and gets up at 6.25pm. He has always needed a lot of sleep and is a grumpy git when he’s very tired.

Some children need more sleep than others so do what works for you (except for my childminder when we were kids who used to put her kids to bed at 5pm- they were 8 & 10 years old!). She had some odd ideas looking back.

TeamGeriatric · Yesterday 16:25

My 12 year old is in bed by 9:30 ideally closer to 9:15, sometimes not asleep until 9:45/10 depends how quiet the rest of the house is and the 14 year old will often go to bed as late as 11, has great bedtime delaying tactics. I am usually asleep before the older one. The older one lies awake for ages if I try to coerce an earlier bedtime, but will sleep in a bit later if it's not a school day the next day.

GoodLife26 · Yesterday 16:26

My 12yo goes to bed at 8:30/9pm. Up for school 6:45am. It works for her. Some children need more/less sleep.

Awlier · Yesterday 16:31

I was at boarding school, and I used their timings as a starting point for my own kids because they were what worked for a lot of us. At 12 we had to be in bed by 9pm, and had lights off at 9.45. So I think 8pm is a bit early to expect her to be upstairs. But if she's ok with it then fine.

TheJoyousBiscuit · Yesterday 16:53

would having her average bedtime routine be helpful. What I would fine really helpful is if u put ur kids bedtime routine like do they close their eyes at 9.45 or read at 945

Dd1 is 12 she's got the same sort if timings for her evening as your dc,
home between 4/4.20
homework or clubs
Tea varies between 5.30 and 7.30
in bed for 9 although if she stays up reading I don't mind for an extra half hour but often it's only 5 minutes.
10 pm Friday and Saturday nights unless we have a big day planned.
She's absolutley awful if she's overtired

Dd2 is 10 and and i could send her to bet at 7 or 1 and she'd be just the same the next day she gets 8.30 just for continuity and 9.30 at the weekend
