AIBU to want to be frightened by a plastic skeleton in every seaside town in Britain?

I’ve apparently reached the stage of life where I need a complete list of the UK’s permanently located ghost trains. Some people take up running. I want to trundle through a dark shed while a skeleton makes a noise at me.

Can you help me check my list?

I mean the traditional funfair rides where you sit in a little carriage and travel through dark rooms full of monsters, skeletons and questionable wiring. They don’t have to be called “Ghost Train” — Horror Hotel, Terror Castle and similar all count. Gentle children’s versions count too. My standards for terror are accommodating.

They must stay at the same venue, although seasonal opening is fine. So piers, seaside fairgrounds, theme parks, museums and small family attractions all qualify. Not travelling fairs, walk-through haunted houses or Halloween events on ordinary railways.

The list so far is below. Do you know one I’ve missed? Or, equally useful, have I included one that has closed, moved or become a café?

Please share the name, venue and town — especially if you’ve seen it operating recently. Local knowledge very welcome before I embark on a pilgrimage to an empty shed.

I love how much joy everyone seems to be taking in this ❤️

Although I slightly regret my username now! I originally logged in to share some feelings about life as a carer on the Elderly Parents board, then decided to reset my mood by planning a more light-hearted quest for next year. Forgot to change the name!

At the risk of being spectacularly outing, here’s my model village account:

I made my teenage daughters join in, telling them that they would always have a great fact about themselves in work icebreakers!

My personal favourite is Polperro. I always love a model village that contains a model village within a model village (shout-out to Corfe, Bourton etc), but Polperro also gets the scale of the buildings just right to make you feel like a giant as you stroll around. Plus, there’s a harbour with running water, so it feels like you’re on the world’s tiniest holiday!

@DontKillSteve
I’ll probably do mini breaks for the ghost trains further afield. With the model villages, I’d plan a route taking in three or four over a long weekend.
In April I had a midlife crisis and bought a camper van, which I haven’t had a chance to use yet (see elder care note above!), so I’m hoping this will be its moment.

Although spending the day on ghost trains and then sleeping alone in a van may turn out to be a flaw in the plan 😂

I love this op! I’ve been obsessed with ghost trains since a small child. Remember reading a great fiction book about some kids who were trapped in one (have not been able to find its name). Have none to add but wondered if you will pass through or do a hotel stay / mini break with the far away ones.

It's not in the UK, but if you ever find yourself in the Netherlands, Danse Macabre at Efteling is an absolute top notch spooky ride.

Whilst Danse Macabre is a great spooky ride, it definitely doesn’t follow the OPs definition of a ghost train.

You’ve missed Pasaje del Terror at the Blackpool Pleasure beach and the ghost train at the Pleasure beach as apparently it’s the only ghost train that’s actually haunted 😂🫣

Great fun! I think there's one at Hunstanton in Norfolk near Sea Life that's permanent?

NerrSnerr · Today 09:27

I adore this so much. Is the one in Bridlington still there?

deeplybaffled · Today 09:27

I’ve been to Bondville a couple of times and love it! You may have inspired me to find more 🤣

Bloody love a ghost train! They’re always so short though. The dream is a proper huge haunted house with a train going through multi levels….but I’d settle for just going twice around!

My kids won’t go on them anymore as they’re cringe and rubbish apparently.

What makes us ghost train aficionados I wonder…?

There used to be one at Walton on the Naze pier called the Roller Ghoster. But apparently that one is now at Barry Island so is on your list already

I was just wondering about that one, it used to be great … do you know (by chance) if there is still one at Clacton or has that gone too?

I think you can make good use of a few days on the North Yorkshire coast and take in the Scarborough Fair Collection, Flamingoland and Bondville. I'm sure there's still at ghost train at one of the amusement arcades on the Esplanade in Bridlington but I can't remember its name at all.

Google “Mad Alice’s Ghost Train North York Moors”. It’s seasonal, you’ve just missed it I think, but one to build into your quest, they do it every year I think.
