AIBU to want to be frightened by a plastic skeleton in every seaside town in Britain?

I’ve apparently reached the stage of life where I need a complete list of the UK’s permanently located ghost trains. Some people take up running. I want to trundle through a dark shed while a skeleton makes a noise at me.

Can you help me check my list?

I mean the traditional funfair rides where you sit in a little carriage and travel through dark rooms full of monsters, skeletons and questionable wiring. They don’t have to be called “Ghost Train” — Horror Hotel, Terror Castle and similar all count. Gentle children’s versions count too. My standards for terror are accommodating.

They must stay at the same venue, although seasonal opening is fine. So piers, seaside fairgrounds, theme parks, museums and small family attractions all qualify. Not travelling fairs, walk-through haunted houses or Halloween events on ordinary railways.

The list so far is below. Do you know one I’ve missed? Or, equally useful, have I included one that has closed, moved or become a café?

Please share the name, venue and town — especially if you’ve seen it operating recently. Local knowledge very welcome before I embark on a pilgrimage to an empty shed.

Now I want a very niche bucket list!

You’re too late for Hollycombe this year, season finale was over Halloween weekend. Diarise for next year as it’s such a unique place!! Good luck in your spooky quest!

Sounds like a great idea.

(Edited because posted too soon)

Ghost trains have always been my favourite ride at the fair/theme park. Especially the ones you describe, the old school ones. So much so that now my dc will check “is there a ghost train for mum” when planning a trip.
I appreciate and applaud you op. I wish you well on your journey.

whatsnewpussycatt · Today 01:31

Also, do you have a list of all the model villages? Would you be willing to share it if so? You have piqued my interest and I would like to go down a google rabbit hole

DontKillSteve · Today 06:28

I love this op! I’ve been obsessed with ghost trains since a small child. Remember reading a great fiction book about some kids who were trapped in one (have not been able to find its name). Have none to add but wondered if you will pass through or do a hotel stay / mini break with the far away ones.

Have you been to Foley farm near Tenby? They used to have an indoor Victorian fairground and there’s a ghost train in there that made all 3 of my children cry. Plus I think you can still use Tesco vouchers for tickets

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 06:38

Great idea. I've only ever been on the Hastings one, as an adult, but it was really fun. Was too scared as a kid!

jonquillegalloise · Today 06:44

I love a ghost train! I also approve of your previous model village quest.

Which model village was the best in your opinion? I would like to do a trip!

Lilacspring · Today 06:47

I`ve checked on their website, fantasy island in ingoldmells which is around 3 1/2 miles from skegness lincolnshire has one.

ClashCityRocker · Today 06:50

After some googling I can't find a single permanent ghost train in Scotland.

Great list OP and the handful that I know you already have on there.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · Today 06:53

Right, this isn't a train, it's a walk-through thing, but the Dracula Experience in Whitby is very good. You walk through (funnily enough) a dark corridor with the scenes set out with mannequins and automatic bits.

scalt · Today 07:01

Mountfichet Castle in Essex also has a good walk-through haunted house; quite scary too, lots of motion-activated things.

Sj595 · Today 07:07

The one at Gullivers world (Warrington) mentioned in PP is a walk through. Another vote for Danse macabre it’s fantastic!

@strangelynumb
Ooh, please share or start a new thread about the model villages! These traditional pastimes need our support!
I'm nowhere near as organised as you but I do try to locate the nearest crazy/mini golf if we are on holiday 😁

Asterales · Today 07:24

There used to be one in Morecambe - it was definitely still there a couple of years ago but I can't guarantee that it still is so that would need checking, but I absolutely love the idea of your quest and wish you every success with it!

TheRealSmurfette · Today 07:35

Hilarious! Have fun OP 🙌☠️🚂👻

Alltheprettyseahorses · Today 08:25

I absolutely love your quest and would read the charming and whimsical book that could result from it! You've already got the 3 main ones localish to me so all I can add is there's always a travelling one at Liverpool's Chinese New Year celebrations.

Me too! I have no ghost trains to add but I am picturing you with a big uk wall map with little flags in it... please tell me you have that?

oustedbymymate · Today 08:39

@Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee the one at the top at Matlock isn’t a ‘ghost train’ like the OP was asking for anymore. It’s a laser shoot ride.

there also isn’t one at sundown.

I’ve been to both places in the last month 🤣

@strangelynumb I love this post so much. I thought it was going to be a typo about how everyone has crap halloween stuff but not. Great reading this morning!
