I couldn’t give a shit about rice crispies to be honest but I am a bit alarmed that this has been done due to a rice shortage! Surely that has wider implications? Or is more of a cost saving thing?

Both. Global warming means that quite a few rice-growing areas are now approaching temperatures at which rice cannot be grown. Given the number of people in the world for whom rice is a dietary staple, it's a worry. And will also stop it being a cheap filler ingredient.

DD said the other day that they tasted all weird and crunchy and we checked the expiry date in case they were off.

She is not a fan.

I said the exact same they taste like a cheap version

I haven’t eaten these since I was in primary and won’t be going to have any for nostalgia now.

From google it looks like Kelloggs rice is (?was) American from Louisiana. Not sure how change is affecting their farmers.

India, has also had reduced crop this year, luckily government has plenty of stock so no shortage currently for export or internal, though there is food inflation there as well.

Snap and crackle but no pop: Rice Krispies reformulated due to lack of rice

Kellogg’s substitutes ingredient with rice flour, as climate crisis affects availability of some grains

Haven't had these since I was 10. Not really fussed personally.

Didn't know there was a lack of rice. That is a bit of a worry!

Unrelated, but... I have been having a problem getting Bisto frozen meals this past 4 weeks or so though... Apparently there is a problem in the supply chain....Shock

WHAT IS GOING ON?!

I blame Trump. But then, I blame him for everything bad. Including my bunions.

So they are going the same tragic way as KitKats, and Cadbury's anything, and Marmite? A sad, pale imitation of their former selves? Is nothing sacred any more?

This is just more evidence of the enshittification of life as we know it in the western world.

I can still buy Sugar Puffs in France, by the way. I think they are called something else but they are definitely Sugar Puffs. I buy them every time when I am on holiday. A small glimmer of hope and nostalgia to cling to, in a depressing world.

MrMurphysComeuppance · Today 19:41

Is there a lack of rice though? I've not noticed an actual rice shortage in the rice isle?

I suppose if there is a rice shortage then Rice Krispies should probably be the first casualty. They are hardly a staple we can't live without. It's important that people in countries where rice is, to them, what bread and potatoes are to us, have enough.

But I suspect there is no actual rice shortage, they've just found they need to pay a bit more for it. So they are enshittifying Rice Krispies to keep the cost to them down, and the cost to us the same. Although they will probably still put the price up to us, and cite the higher price of rice as the reason.

Right thats it.

Some of the supermarket own brands are fine.

This is what I was wondering. Will be checking all the ingredients for evil wheat

It is sad, I've got a nearly full packet of Coco Pops (minus the one bowl that I poured in my innocence) that will now have to go in the bin!
