Too fat for small gym towel sarong in sauna

I've joined a new gym, big selling point for me was it has a sauna off changing room/showers. The gym supplies towels but they are small and I can't wrap quite them around me. There is a gape which wouldn't be so bad but it had to be under my boobs to cover my bum. I'm about 172cm tall and a size 14-16 for perspective.

Lots of people seem slim and can just wear as usual, others seem to have arrangements with multiple towels that I don't want to stare at to figure out how they are doing it. No issues with taking multiple towels on way in.

I took my own larger towel and this ruined the ease of having them supplied so not keen to keep doing that.

Any tips for multi towel wrapping? could I take a nappy pin or some kind of clip.

A lightweight Decathlon huge microfibre towel sheet works for me, or a cotton Turkish towel?
I would always have the same problem as you op.

Get a microfibre beach towel they are really big and dry quickly so no damp towel sitting in the laundry basket.

I use this one for the gym but it’s not for the sauna (I wear a swim suit in there) it’s for after my shower.

Just wear your bloody swimsuit under the towel, no need gor all this drama

How closely are you looking at people to figure out if they have anything on under their towel

This feels like another of the many creepy posts tonight 🙄

Irealise it's silly but I would quite like to just blend in, I'm not used to single sex saunas alongside showers in this way and and trying to pick up the etiquette. I would feel weird and uncomfortable in a swimsuit having noe sauned without one and there is no pool so I would have to take along a swimsuit shower and stick it on which probably would be less modest to witness than wrapping around a towel.

I'm trying not to look at anyone, which is why I can't figure out how the multi- towel wrap is working for so many other people. It is open plan lockers room for dressing post sauna people drop the towels and it is obvious without looking. I didn't volunteer any of the details, I was asked about what other people were doing

Take your own cotton sarong or microfibre towel. Much easier to wear and easier to wash.

TheChosenTwo · 01/11/2026 22:36

Honestly it’s probably easier to just take your own towel.
it will only be wet for a short period of time surely.
My gym provides towels for the spa and I wear my swimming costume and then just hang it over a garden chair when I get back; I don’t actually wash them that often as it’s not good for the material.
I also swim in a lake where I take my own towel, I use a microfibre one which again I just hang to air when I get home, I probably should wash that one every time as it has lake water on it but I shower when I get home and use a normal bath towel after, the microfibre one is just used to dry me off quickly, I chuck my robe on take off my swimmers and drive home.

Everyone wears their swimming costumes in my gym's sauna - just do that. It's not a big deal.

No swimming costumes/underwear allowed in the one at my gym. Towel only. And it needs to be large enough that you don't sweat on the bench i.e. you have to sit or lie completely on it, feet included. I got a microfibre Dock &Bay one, the XL size is massive. It dries really quickly so if I don't want to wash it immediately it doesn't sit there festering.

You shouldn't wear swimming costumes in the sauna anyway, unless they are clean from the wash. People definitely shouldn't be going to the sauna from the pool in their swimming costumes bringing chlorine in (not an issue in your situation)

I would take your own towel in, a microfibre one that is lightweight so easier to stuff in the wash, trying to faff around with two towels sounds a pain, and might come loose. Or just go naked and sit on the towel as you are meant to in sauna, so you can sweat properly, if you feel brave enough in time.

Adding to this that swimwear and saunas don’t go together; regular wearing of a swimsuit in a sauna will quickly ruin it. And yes, as PP said, sit on a towel, otherwise you are likely to burn your bum.

Wear a swimming costume or bikini and lie on the towel. Sauna at my gym is mixed and so…

The OP has said that she “would feel weird and uncomfortable in a swimsuit”.

l’ve never seen swimwear in a women only sauna.

Waitingfordoggo · Yesterday 08:38

I know you’re asking about how to layer the gym towels, but if you do end up having to use your own towels, I second the PPs recommendations for microfibres towels because they dry incredibly quickly and are also very thin so don’t take up much space in the washing machine.

When I go to the gym I go in the sauna in my swimsuit.

Whereas in the ladies-only sauna at my gym, most women wear a swimming costume. Some don't, most do.
