Too fat for small gym towel sarong in sauna

I've joined a new gym, big selling point for me was it has a sauna off changing room/showers. The gym supplies towels but they are small and I can't wrap quite them around me. There is a gape which wouldn't be so bad but it had to be under my boobs to cover my bum. I'm about 172cm tall and a size 14-16 for perspective.

Lots of people seem slim and can just wear as usual, others seem to have arrangements with multiple towels that I don't want to stare at to figure out how they are doing it. No issues with taking multiple towels on way in.

I took my own larger towel and this ruined the ease of having them supplied so not keen to keep doing that.

Any tips for multi towel wrapping? could I take a nappy pin or some kind of clip.

Just take your bigger towel? Better than faffing around with a safety pin.

What?

Just shove your own towel in your bag and get on with your sauna.

greencrab · 01/11/2026 20:56

I then had to wash the towel and I don't really want to be adding four or five towels to the washing each week (it would sit damp and sweaty in bag so I couldn't just reuse next day/time like I would at home after airing) at this time of year when it's a bigger you get stuff dry as is. I did assume it was the easy solution then realised it was an extra faff.

There clearly are ways as several people seem to manage nobody else is bringing own towels..so I guess this thread is because I want you learn a technique to staking more than one. It seems simple till I start to walk and then it seems to all start falling off

I've never actually used a sauna so don't know the etiquette but presumably you have no clothes on under the towel? I understand they go naked inside if in Germany.
Can you not wear a towel on you head coming out of the shower and then transfer it to the body? This would then save you having to get it from your bag. Failing that would nipple tassels be out of the question?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 01/11/2026 21:12

If you wrap 2 towels around you so one end of each is under the other (i think you'd need to do that rather than one wrapped half around you then the other on top) and then fold the top edge down twice all the way around, do they stay up securely? I've not tried it, it's how I keep 1 big towel up securely, it might work to hold 2!

Or safety pin/ nappy pin to hold 2 together?

Surely you can see it’s easier to use a gym supplied towel and that it’s not the act of putting it in her bag that’s the extra work but washing and drying a towel when you don’t have to.

I can only think of wrapping two diagonally. If people are doing it it must be possible.

So do I. Nobody has a towel at my gym.

DeutscheBahnTicket · 01/11/2026 21:15

Is this in the UK? Every gym sauna I have used people wear swimsuits so no need for the towel toga!

When you wash your towels do you have to walk a mile to the river and beat them against stones?

Or do you just pop them in a machine and press a button?

Kepler22B · 01/11/2026 21:19

Couple of hair claw clips to hold the two towels together.

Peonies12 · 01/11/2026 21:21

Is it a nude sauna? I just go in the sauna at my gym wearing a swimming costume. No one sits on towels. Where I have been to other saunas I’ve just taken a hand towel to sit on.

Defiantly41 · 01/11/2026 21:32

I’m assuming you want to do the towel sarong for coverage/modesty walking to the sauna? Anyway I googled it for step by step instructions (sorry for AI formatting)
Step-by-Step Method

  1. Overlap the Edges: Lay the two towels flat and overlap their short (or long) edges by about 4 to 6 inches so the combined length is long enough to wrap around your waist or chest.
  2. Secure the Seam:
  • Quick & Temporary: Use safety pins, large hair clips, or a rubber band to pin the overlapping edge together from the inside.
  • No-Pin Alternative: Firmly hold the two overlapping corners against your body as you wrap the first towel; the tension of the wrap will lock the second towel in place.
  1. Wrap Around Your Waist or Chest:
  • Hold the combined top edge horizontally behind your back.
  • Bring both outer ends around to the front.
  • Cross one end over the other and tie a double knot at your hip or center. 1, 2]
  1. Adjust the Fit: Fold down the top edge once or twice if the towels are too tall or to create a more secure, snug waistband

Dreadingtheday · 01/11/2026 21:44

Oh God, this is made me paranoid about going swimming or sauna or whatever which I haven’t done for ages

How small are the towels?

JohnofWessex · 01/11/2026 21:44

Why not ask the Gym if they could provide bigger towels for those that need them

ThreeNewWords · 01/11/2026 21:46

Do other users really all wear towels? That sounds a bit horrible. Everyone in my gym just saunas in a swimsuit. Even that's bad enough. I'd much prefer to sauna nude.

There is no pool, internet blurb I read before joining says people will be wearing swimsuits but I've visited three branches now and so far not a swimsuit in sight.

Most people in towels, some with pants on under towel (me so far) a couple sitting there totally naked on a towel.

I've read you shouldn't be sauna in manmade materials. Not sure how pressing that issue is but definitely easier to shower without sweat off, pop on towel sauna then back in shower to rinse off sauna sweat....as long as you can keep the towel on

Yes in UK, London chain

That's probably very sensible but It's be fast too embarrassed to explain I'm too fat for the towel situation or then ask for a plus size towel each time rather than grab one at the desk

I think I need to physically do this step by step to understand it fully but a hair tie might be a good shout if it can take the weight even more discreet than a hairclip

Just wear your bloody swimsuit under the towel, no need gor all this drama

How closely are you looking at people to figure out if they have anything on under their towel

This feels like another of the many creepy posts tonight 🙄

FreyaJade · 01/11/2026 22:00

Ok so if I take a towel anywhere it’s one of the hammam towels I have as they’re very thin & dry quickly.. all the hammam towels I’ve bought are large enough to cover me up really well (I’m a curvy size 16), & as they’re thin I wouldn’t get too overheated; so they would be perfect in a spa / sauna.

You can look for them online or in various stores; 2 of mine were from Tesco actually! & I got another one when on holiday in Greece. But loads of online shops sell them. Much better than faffing about with several small towels clipped together!
