Are you good at spotting when something is AI generated?

I think that I probably am but I’m surprised so many people are falling for it and can’t see when something is fake.

I appreciate AI is progressing scarily fast and images have become so very life-like in a very short space of time (it’s actually terrifying imo). However, so many people I know fall for it all the time. My sister and I adore acts and dogs and she is forever sending me FB clips of cats chasing a dog or such and it’s so obviously AI to me but she can’t see it. More worryingly my DH’s cousin has just been scammed out of £300k from a ‘woman’ he met online, I have no idea if she was for real or AI as he’s burying his head in the sand over it all and won’t talk but with AI becoming so very life-like people who were scamming others will be able to replace their images with AI ones and fools such as DH’s cousin will fall for it time and again.

I don’t know if this is allowed but I’ve added a Facebook clip of this supposed 75 year old health and fitness expert. It was sent to me by my 76 year old friend feeling bad about herself because she doesn’t have this kind of energy. Whilst I appreciate there are some very fit and energetic people 70 and beyond this does not look real to me, something is off. The woman just doesn’t seem 100% right to me but all the responses are people in awe of her (not to mention over 9 million views!). Are they seeing something I’m not? I’m certainly not going to click on the link incase it is some kind of scam but I’ve googled this woman and her fitness business doesn’t appear to exist.

AI is so sophisticated these days and getting so difficult to detect, I know but can you see when something is AI these days? Are you easily taken in by it?

Personally I wish it had never been invented, it’s bloody scary. I hate to think what my children’s future is with this and where it’s going.

We’ve had a campaign running at work to spot scams and phishing and one of the quizzes was to tell which of two 20 second video clips of a man talking was AI. I watched both loads of times, checked the number of fingers, shadows, weird teeth, odd blinking patterns, everything I could think of, and I couldn’t tell. 🤷‍♀️

I think I'm fairly good at spotting it but I don't think that will last forever. In videos or photos the faces are realistic now but the 'reactions' are always over the top.

People sobbing with scrunched up faces and gallons of tears falling down their face - at something where you wouldn't cry that much, and it'll either be a scenario trying to get sympathy or trying to make someone look ridiculous and weak.

Angry people in a rictus of fury for several minutes stabbing their fingers and yelling in someone's face - again people just don't hold their faces like that for that long.

Also in videos when you can tell it's someone's caricature of 'the other side politically' (and I'm sorry, but I've only ever seen this done to the Left, not by the Left) - people can't find actually film of their imaginary scenario where a supposed feminist gets angry at not having a door opened for her or something, or a disadvantaged woman of colour gripes that she can't buy T-bone steak on her benefits, so they use AI knowing their audience won't know or care.

I think you can also tell in their voices too, they all seem to sound the same. As you say, it will change though. It's frightening what the future holds for humans and the development of AI.

Very worrying, it's getting so very realistic.

Text I think I can pretty much always tell. Images and videos, sometimes but not always. An instagram account with 2 cats and a dog fooled me, until there was a really unbelievable one where the cat imitated the corgi’s walk to mock him. It had me going for a while though.

cardiqueen · Yesterday 14:20

Yes that 75 year old is clearly off.

Any ad on Twitter I automatically assume is AI. And I am suspicious of 'cute clever animal' videos. And from occasionally dipping into Gemini (which is generally quite shit) I am reasonably good at recognising the style of AI responses.

I do need one of those cat jumpers though 😂

I was looking at short hairstyles on Pinterest yesterday to show my hairdresser what style I want, and a lot of it now is labelled 'AI modified' (and it very obviously is).

I find AI both depressing and scary.

punkinpye · Yesterday 14:27

Hmmm I do think I'm pretty good but I do work as a photographer, artist and filmmaker so my eye is pretty in on these things. However it's only going to get worse and harder to spot and even now I feel that I am really doubtful about a lot of things I am seeing even if it isn't totally obvious it's AI.

I also notice that a lot of people don't really care if it's AI or not. So much of the stuff we buy now, cards, wrapping paper, book covers, anything with a design on it is AI which I don't like and try to avoid but most people don't question it much. I have seen some frighteningly impressive illustration work from AI recently which makes me despair for the future of Illustrators and designers who are already seeing massive reductions in paid work.

I see lots of smart people share AI photos and Videos of Trump and so on and while I dislike the man and appreciate satire about him at some point all these AI videos of him and similar are just slop, a pile of useless junk that costs resources like water and energy to create.

I think that AI would be better used for very specific uses that help humans do really difficult things in medicine or science, I'm open to what it could be used for but if we just keep using it to make all this slop or to avoid doing things we could do if we just used our brains then it's as bad as all the plastic tat we've left swirling around in the ocean.

Very, very obvious in written text.

A space line between practically every sentence.

And all the:

"Not blah blah.

Not wah wah.

Not something else.

Just (insert sickly crap here)"

And yet this utter shite always gets the "spot on", "so true", "so moving" comments.
Utterly nauseating.

I sometimes post like that when I want to make separate points. MNs bullet point formatting is crap. Last time I checked i was a biological human 👀

I can tell when most videos are AI, some photos, but I do struggle with text since I apparently post like one. Separate lines ... and - are my favourites Grin

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · Yesterday 20:39

I use separate lines, ... and - too.

I doubt Ai would come over as irritable as me though.

cardiqueen · Today 08:01

I use dashes too. I don't think much about at separate lines, I think humans do that too, in the example above I would see it as irritating adspeak. Might be AI, might not. In longer pieces on message boards AI always over explains, and has a certain tone.

FinJut · Today 08:35

On social media the ai clips that are obviously ai are often purposely obviously ai as that makes people engage with the post. It’s the same result as leaving a glaring spelling mistake in a post which has people rushing to write replies.

You can definitely tell when some things are written by ai but people who claim the can ‘always’ tell are deluded and probably more at risk of being scammed etc than other people.

DevastatingFinish · Today 08:44

As others, text I think I can always tell. I think in text and am a great reader etc so that’s my natural medium. Images and videos I am getting better but not always getting it - we are all also learning about AI and will get better at recognising it too.
It is music I have idea about at all. I’m not musical and I just cannot tell even when it’s explained to me very slowly!

Yes or hot young women at AI generated right wing protests holding placards and spouting alt-right views. Clearly “hot young women agree with me!” is highly engaging to Tommy Robinson types 😂😂

I’ve noticed similar with alleged incidents in Gaza with children starving to death or being shot or their grieving father holding their bodies. AI is everywhere!

Are you good at spotting when something is AI generated?

Probably not, why would I be?
Nowadays, I kind of assume everything ONLINE that I see, read or hear is fake unless I trust the source.

That’s definitely how it’s getting for me too.
