Are you good at spotting when something is AI generated?

I think that I probably am but I’m surprised so many people are falling for it and can’t see when something is fake.

I appreciate AI is progressing scarily fast and images have become so very life-like in a very short space of time (it’s actually terrifying imo). However, so many people I know fall for it all the time. My sister and I adore acts and dogs and she is forever sending me FB clips of cats chasing a dog or such and it’s so obviously AI to me but she can’t see it. More worryingly my DH’s cousin has just been scammed out of £300k from a ‘woman’ he met online, I have no idea if she was for real or AI as he’s burying his head in the sand over it all and won’t talk but with AI becoming so very life-like people who were scamming others will be able to replace their images with AI ones and fools such as DH’s cousin will fall for it time and again.

I don’t know if this is allowed but I’ve added a Facebook clip of this supposed 75 year old health and fitness expert. It was sent to me by my 76 year old friend feeling bad about herself because she doesn’t have this kind of energy. Whilst I appreciate there are some very fit and energetic people 70 and beyond this does not look real to me, something is off. The woman just doesn’t seem 100% right to me but all the responses are people in awe of her (not to mention over 9 million views!). Are they seeing something I’m not? I’m certainly not going to click on the link incase it is some kind of scam but I’ve googled this woman and her fitness business doesn’t appear to exist.

AI is so sophisticated these days and getting so difficult to detect, I know but can you see when something is AI these days? Are you easily taken in by it?

Personally I wish it had never been invented, it’s bloody scary. I hate to think what my children’s future is with this and where it’s going.

Some of them are so obviously ridiculous - like the couple I've seen where somebody runs up an almost-vertical ramp as high as a 4-storey building, does a backflip at the top and then lands back on the ramp and runs gracefully back down to the start - as effortlessly as if they'd picked up a teaspoon. Also the many animal ones where the animal is clearly just too intelligent and forward-thinking to be an actual animal.

I think a lot of the more subtle and plausible ones are not quite as subtle and plausible as people may think, though. There are usually giveaway clues staring you right in the face. Anybody who thinks that they're indistinguishable from reality - to a discerning viewer - is woefully deluded.

Yes. But I have some friends who are my age (30s/40s) who I’d have down as being sensible/savvy who have sent me stuff not noticing it’s AI and I do find it concerning

Bellu · Yesterday 12:53

The people in the mirror are completely different people

mondaytosunday · Yesterday 12:53

Yes and as I crochet there’s tons of fake crochet projects posted and patterns that are AI generated. And yes it is fairly easy to spot - they are very good though and I think the worrying use is when they take a celebrity’s image and voice to promote products.

Irondavy · Yesterday 12:54

I’m pretty good but it’s definitely getting better and is very worrying

Zov · Yesterday 13:01

I usually can tell, but I have been fooled a few times. Like I saw a jumper for sale in H & M last week that has a large pocket at the front that you can keep your cat in, and it was SO convincing. (To me 😆)

My late 20s daughter said 'mum, are you daft or what? It's clearly a.i...' Blush

Here it is. H & M have confirmed it's fake, and to NOT click on any links to it - to buy it. You don't need to be logged into Facebook to view it.

People never take in the whole scene. I’ve seen other clips on sm where people in the background are walking with three legs or no feet and so many of the viewers don’t see it until someone points it out, they are easily drawn in.

That’s the very worry part of it. There are so many deep fake videos around and they are all so life like. Bloody scary.

I can spot AI text easily, and certain kinds of graphics, but I'm not always able to tell the difference between human digital art and AI "art".

Surely it’s obvious… the lack of shadows and perspective being off in the shop footage, the way the white cat drops into it…?

Wopple · Yesterday 13:16

I’m getting pretty good these days I think. I used to love watching animal videos but I honestly don’t trust a lot of them these days. As someone else said you can often tell an animal video is fake because animals just don’t behave like that. There’s so many of animals (often breeds of what are considered dangerous dogs) saving babies and small children from all kinds of danger. Followed by endless comments about how amazing the fur babies are and there’s no such thing as dangerous dogs.

That’s so clearly AI to me

OctoberUsername · Yesterday 13:20

What annoys me is that I’ve tried to make AI videos for, what I think, is really simple concepts eg ‘walking in a park in autumn holding a note and the note says ABC’ and it can’t get any of that right. Then you get things like deep fakes etc.

I used to be good. But I think it's massively improved now.

Your text looks AI though.

EmptyInTheValley · Yesterday 13:30

Very, very obvious in written text.

A space line between practically every sentence.

And all the:

"Not blah blah.

Not wah wah.

Not something else.

Just (insert sickly crap here)"

And yet this utter shite always gets the "spot on", "so true", "so moving" comments.
Utterly nauseating.

I saw a similar one on FB for some kind of heated jumpers (they were aimed at nurses I think)

I didn't immediately think AI, although knew it wasn't a genuine H&M advert / it was tweaked.... I suppose all tweaks are now AI though..... so....

Going back to the cat jumper though. My boys would scratch me to pieces before I would be able to shove them in there.

My FIL (81) sends loads of AI stuff and I feel so bad as I don't want him being made to look silly. Although most worrying I suppose is that he probably believes what he sends is real. Most of it is stuff that is plausible to be fair but he does occasionally send something that has me shaking my head.

My 14yo is brilliant at spotting AI but the 12yo not so much (although they both have limited access to devices and none of them have any social media - barring 14yo who has WhatsApp. 12yo doesn't have a smartphone)

I don't use TT or Instagram but FB is endemic for AI. If I suspect something is fake I now ask my 14yo.

Off topic but don’t let him bury his head in the sand. Banks can help with scams, he needs to get onto them and see if they can get it back or refund it etc.

That is a fantastic idea though, I need one of those. Or 2.

Spot on, that's so true.

Echobelly · Yesterday 13:56

I think I'm fairly good at spotting it but I don't think that will last forever. In videos or photos the faces are realistic now but the 'reactions' are always over the top.

People sobbing with scrunched up faces and gallons of tears falling down their face - at something where you wouldn't cry that much, and it'll either be a scenario trying to get sympathy or trying to make someone look ridiculous and weak.

Angry people in a rictus of fury for several minutes stabbing their fingers and yelling in someone's face - again people just don't hold their faces like that for that long.

Also in videos when you can tell it's someone's caricature of 'the other side politically' (and I'm sorry, but I've only ever seen this done to the Left, not by the Left) - people can't find actually film of their imaginary scenario where a supposed feminist gets angry at not having a door opened for her or something, or a disadvantaged woman of colour gripes that she can't buy T-bone steak on her benefits, so they use AI knowing their audience won't know or care.

Haha, well I am constantly knackered from caring for my mum who has Alzheimer's so maybe I just go onto a kind of robot-like state half the time and that reflects in my threads?

His bank is helping I believe and his employer's husband is a solicitor and is also helping apparently.
