Car accident

I went out yesterday in bad weather, all was fine but when I got home I managed to damage my car by going forward into wall instead of reversing which sounds absolutely ridiculous, I think my foot slipped and I drive an auto and I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t back up and it went forward into to my neighbours garden, happened in a split second. We have only recently moved. I was so embarrassed and apologetic

my car had to be picked up by a truck in the pouring rain and will hear on Monday from garage.

i can’t sleep, I feel physically sick and never want to drive again

my dh is totally unsupportive and questioned why I went out. I was dropping off my dc and then shopping, why was I buying water etc. He said I am wound up and knew something awful would happen.

dh told me my car is a write off. It was a great car and I’m devastated

fortunately I’m off work atm

It’s more than the car, it’s just his reaction which is like this with other things, had relatives staying who had just gone and it’s a smaller property than before

feeling exhausted, stressed and want it all to go away, was awake half the night

thanks

Your story reminded me of this short video, https://www.youtube.com/shorts/p0xWvhTmf-s

Edit - I know this post looks a bit suspicious, but I don't want to spoil it. It's a snip from BBC Sounds documentary.

Your husband is an absolute arsehole and if I was your best mate, I’d step in and tell him to STFU, then give you a big hug.

It’s really no big deal.
You haven’t injured anyone.

Unless you drove into the wall at great speed, or your car is incredibly old or very expensive to repair, I don’t see why they’d write off your car.

Stop letting him abuse you in this way. He needs to wind his neck in and stop winding you up. Does he get some perverted pleasure from seeing you upset?

Why isn’t he your number one supporter? That’s what a real partner’s role is. If he doesn’t mend his ways, start considering divorce as he’ll only continue to make you miserable over the next few years.

Yes I think he may do

Does he bully you often?

Yes, this just gives him power, he was even asking why was I on the internet. He has gone outside for a bit, was sighing and huffing all morning, there is a lot I do get right but this is never acknowledged

Darling, you are not stupid. You have been conned by a trickster into thinking he was a decent bloke. He’s really not.

It’s not going to get better so start making your exit plans. Things will be a million times better without this burden hanging around your neck.

Been there, got the T shirt and my life is soooo much happier nowadays with my DH as he’s my number one supporter. You deserve so much more.

I don’t want to drive again. I know I have to Is this normal?

I’m guessing part of this is because of his reaction, you will be on tenterhooks in case it happens again. You aren’t the first and you won’t be the last to have an accident in the car. No one was hurt just your pride. Ignore him you made a mistake it happens

Take a deep breath, have a cup if tea and try and relax. It's probably the shock of it all. Try not to go over it in your mind and think what if this, what if that, what if.., what if...
You crashed into a wall. Embarrassing yes, expensive possibly but it's really not the worst mistake in the world.

Yes, you might be scared to drive again, I think that would be normal but assuming you can normally drive perfectly well don't let this stop you. Don't let your OH stop you driving because if you decide at any point this relationship isn't working (as he doesn't exactly sound supportive) you will be very glad you had carried on driving.

I did something similar a couple of months ago, I was reversing onto my driveway, the back of my car was too close to the fence and for some reason thought moving the rear of the car away would help and i caved in the front passenger door against the fence post. DH wasn’t best pleased but all I said to him is there’s nothing he could say that would make me feel worse than I already do and at the end of the day it’s metal and plastic, no one was injured. Be kind to yourself, I’m sure you’ll get the confidence to drive again.

I will have to for work purposes, it’s also the dark nights that are coming as well but I will get there 😀

Yes that’s how I feel, it happens so quickly and I didn’t even have to reverse. I could have driven straight in

he was very dismissive about trying to build up supplies in case of power cut etc.

He can eat his own stockpile of food and drink his own stored water then, can't he.

DinoLil · 26/10/2026 17:03

It's okay. You're in a bit of a shocked state but you'll be okay. How are things today?

stupid36 · 26/10/2026 17:48

Better today thanks. Slept better and feel more philosophical about it.
