Really waterproof and warm (and waterproof!) coats

I know this has been asked before but really would be grateful for recommendations. Even with waterproof spray my Seasalt one isn’t cutting it in this weather. Thank you!

Someone recommended this last year:
https://www.mandmdirect.com/gb/en/product/qw30236/trespass-womens-audrey-waterproof-padded-hooded-coat-navy
It's warm and waterproof. My only complaint is that it doesn't have an inside pocket which is useful for a phone or bus pass. Oh, and it's very slippery inside so it can't be worn with a slippery gilet or similar.
I like the Seasalt Janelle coat on other people but on me it looks so frumpy.

That might have been me! It keeps me dry and dries off itself quickly

I’ve got a mountain warehouse one with removable liner. It’s a game changer. Lovely and warm, but also very waterproof and without the lining it’s good for spring/ autumn also. In fact I only put the lining back in yesterday. It was one of their more premium coats, think £120 ish last winter

Anyone have any recommendations for a Goretex long coat? I have a shorter one which keeps my top half really dry and not sweaty when I go for walks but everything from the waist down gets drenched, and not in a fun way

Didricksons - 100% waterproof and warm (depending which one you get)

CopeNorth · Yesterday 05:07

Finisterre or Fjällräven.

worth the money. I’ve had my Fjällräven (warm winter) years and it’s still like new. You can re-wax it.

I have a couple of lighter Finisterre waterproofs for layering / hiking. I did a bit of research and they were the best in some trials. You can often pick one up on Vinted, their own pre-loved section, or in the sale.

Agree on the Scandi brands. They know how to cope with bad weather.

Reinwear absolutely brilliant. I was out in the storms for several hours yesterday and it kept me very warm and totally dry. I have the Reinwear Pro

If you aren't too bothered about style, you are looking for something that meets EN343:3 standard.

I have a work jacket that I can wear to walk the dogs and it is bullet proof and I only need a t shirt under it in -3°C.

Something like from here:

Thanks so much for this - just added one for my son’s stocking for cycling in the winter!

I also meant to recommend SportPursuit website; a bit like TK Maxx but for sport/active wear, and they often have great discounts on expensive brands.

bababamama · Yesterday 08:57

The outer layer needs to be a proper waterproof surface, gortex is one type but there are others, look for the rating, should be 10,000. You can then either layer a warm coat or jacket underneath when the weather requires it or you can buy 3 in 1 jackets where the warm layer fixes into the waterproof one. Down jackets (or artificial ones) sold separately are never waterproof enough in my experience, not even skiwear ones.

LemonTT · Yesterday 09:24

I’m completely happy with my Didrikson. It is 100% waterproof and has a decent tog. It’s hard to get a high tog and waterproof. I don’t need it to be polar expedition worthy so that’s fine. I can layer up I need to.

The benefit of good waterproof is the water slides off so it doesn’t need to be dried out. A good shake should get rid of the water.

I have invested in coats over the years and have quite a few that are 10 years+. One is probably 20 years plus. They are an investment piece. So if and when you can afford it, they are worth the spend.

I've been looking at this one. Is the hood OK? Is it quite big? Also, how is the sizing?

Netcurtainnelly · Yesterday 10:49

Most of them are drab colours. I'm looking for yellow or red.

naffogato · Yesterday 10:55

I love my Didrikson

WhyCantThingsJustBeEasy · Yesterday 11:18

@Stopsnowing can you tell me how the sizing is, please. Thats a great price! 🙂

Look at the technical waterproof jackets in outdoor shops. They have different ratings for waterproofness and are also windproof but breathable. Layered with a fleece they are the best bet for really wet weather. Not very fashionable but in extreme weather everyone has their heads down anyway!
