What exactly to stockpile?

I am going out this evening to buy food we can eat for three days without cooking. But what? So far I thought,
Tinned sardines
Bread for the freezer
Jam and marmite
Nuts
Wine

What else would you buy? Please don't talk about things you can cook, I just want things that need no cooking but we could live on for three days. Thanks.

Why 3 days though

Why not?

What number of days do you suggest instead.

3 days is enough for most emergencies to be resolved, and achievable for most people.

I'm a bit amazed by the freak out over this, are you all really young, or soft city folk?

Those of us who live in rural areas, and/or those who remember the 70s, don't really find it a big deal to have some tins of food and candles in case power goes off for couple of days.

Between "panic and fill the house with died food, camping stoves and home surgery kit" and "I don't give a fuck I'm not doing anything" there's a lovely happy medium of just getting in a couple of extra tins without making a fuss.

I consider myself lucky to have lived through those times in the 70's because it has helped me to always be as well stocked as I can especially as I do live in a rural area and often experience power cuts in bad weather. No panic buying in this house. We have a wee camping stove because we're all electric and need our cuppas to keep going 😆
When we had the coal fire we used to boil water & make toast on it , but it was taken out 6 years ago & so we got the wee camping stove . Tea, toast and a candle lit bath was all we needed to get by then!

Stock stuff you will eat, and preferably stuff you would normally eat.

If you don't have a camping stove or other way to warm it up, tinned/jar food that can be eaten cold is just fine - soup, sauces, stew, baked beans, fish etc. plus packet rice or lentils. Sweet stuff maybe nicer cold - fruit, rice pudding, custard.

It's only 3 days worth, and just in case of short term power outages.

It's not the fucking zombie apocalypse.

I would not normally eat stuff suitable for this. I have bought tins of soup, tuna etc.

Tinned cannellini beans or similar
Jar of olives
Jar of grilled peppers
For a protein based no/cook salad

Pouch of puy lentils
Jar ingredients as above
Frankfurters to slice in - another hearty cold salad dish

Packets of tortillas can have a long shelf life - keep using and rotating.
Tuna wrap / tin or pouch of refried beans

What have I missed- why are we stock piling?

whatcanthematterbe81 · Yesterday 17:26

Exactly. I’m kinda baffled. I’ve stockpiled for the next two week, like I’ve been doing my whole adult life 🤪.

I beat you on that....ive got a whole months worth of everything! Just need the odd loaf, milk, cheese and cold meat as we dont really use much of that 🤭. Why are we asked to stock food? Sure i asked before on another thread but I forget 😳. Is it going to be a big black out and the terminator is going to come and get us all? Or worse? The predator? 😱. I better order more gin, just incase.

Flannelfeet · Today 00:13

Gottodosomething2026 · Yesterday 20:17

That I can do. Little onions too?

Oh and the wee baby hotdogs and gherkins too and i will join you both....i will supply the home brewed gin and wine. We better make a good time of it before the rations run out. 🫠

RaggedRocks · Today 00:14

I have bought in 10 kg each of flour, rice and potatoes, but if the leccy is off, how am I supposed to cook them? I bought 20 rolls of bog paper. I am ready, but I am not sure what for? Nuclear war? What for exactly?

OneoftheWeddingPeople · Today 00:19

Russia or Iran attacking our utilities / supply chain I reckon. We have 3 days food as a country then it’s replenished. You need stuff you can eat without cooking tins and bottled water basically.

If it happened would be interesting to see if the faddy kids would stay faddy or if hunger would just override that.

ThatLemonBee · Today 00:23

Why would you not cook ? Buy a camping gas cooker it’s £20 .
Anyway you can have canned tuna , chilli , frankfurters , cheese , chorizo and Parma ham , cereals , milk , cereal bars

Constantrunner · Today 00:25

£20 is a waste of it's never used.
And if it's bad weather I don't want to use a stove outside.

Not everyone has somewhere safe to use a gas stove.

We used our camping stove indoors for weeks while our kitchen was being done.

Had no idea this was a problem.

I love that wine is on the list but water isn't. 🤣

Reminds me of the tv presenter who asked a little girl what her favourite bible story was and she said

'When jesus turned water into wine'
'That was a miracle wasn't it. And what does that story teach us?'
'That when you run out of wine, get on your knees and pray'

It isn't. We used one for 8 months whilst our kitchen was renovated. Everyone who has a gas boiler should have a CO alarm anyway and they are less than £10 on Amazon anyway.

What have I missed- why are we stock piling?

Well, we shouldn’t. Adults, especially those with families, should definitely have enough food and water at home to last a few days, ideally a week.

So many things can go wrong (power cuts, cyberattacks, etc.), but in the modern world, we’ve become so reliant on “Oh, I’ll just order something or pop into the shop” that people have forgotten that if the system fails, they could literally have nothing to eat or drink.

We have enough food to last a family of five around two- three months. But we have a huge pantry, and I cook every single meal from scratch. We don’t stockpile; this is just our lifestyle. We can cook on our log burner, heat water and even collect water.

I love the sense of security it brings. We use these things regardless, but it’s reassuring to know that whatever happens, my family will be fine for a while.

FindingMeno · Today 08:53

@Loverurarliving01 I agree. We are so soft nowadays.
I believe skills are so important too and think those of us who have skills should take any opportunity to teach those who want to learn.
For example, if you've never had the opportunity to get a fire going, it's not something you're just born knowing.
I know how to pluck, gut, cook over an open fire, shoot, swim, ride a bike etc etc but only because I've been taught by others.

RaggedRocks · Today 09:50

I have got a wind up lantern. You wind it up for about 5 minutes and you get a minute of light.

It’s not at all . We use one if I want to try something that takes longer as the electric hobs don’t hold the heat as well . We always have them as a emergency too

Surely most normal households have 3 days of food in the cupboards most of the time ? Unless you do your grocery shopping day by day?

Nopenousername · Today 10:22

momager22 · Today 10:18

Surely most normal households have 3 days of food in the cupboards most of the time ? Unless you do your grocery shopping day by day?

Exactly that. Unless you have a medical condition, surely most adults will survive 3 days on some crackers, old biscuits or some baked beans. And before someone comes at me saying not everyone can afford to just have an extra can of tuna or chickpeas in their cupboard, they will probably not be in a position to stockpile anyway.

FindingMeno · Today 10:25

Coconut milk is a good thing to have in - add chickpeas or any pulses and some spices, and anything else you may have to use up from the fridge, makes a delicious curry.

EasternStandard · Today 11:39

I put extra water in the shop delivery, cupboards are always full anyway, we have a battery radio, the only thing I’m deliberating on is a gas camping stove.

I bought stuff in Covid that still lingers (industrial size hand gel, oxygen finger test thing) and since then I try not to get swept up in buying things.

But as said to me it’s £30 with gas. Just have it incase. Will ponder
