Do you hate running and want to be mercilessly bullied into it? Cod's couch to 5k

If so I am your woman!
You might remember me from other successes as ' Potty training boot camp with Cod' and ' the Horned Hoofers". But now, in a Moment of Madness, I decided to do 5k, my reasoning being that all sorts if idiots can run, so so can I.
I finished it a week ahead ( GET ME) and now after not wanting to run, ever, and being unable to do 5 minutes, I can run for 35 without stopping

What is in it for you?
You will do couch to 5k in the 9 weeks and no slacking
I will bully you

Result
You will end up loving running as much as I do now. Its free, its quickly over (!) and its transportable.
If I can, you can.

What do you need?
Trainers
A sports bra
Music if that is your thing
The Couch to 5k app
Its even better if you have a smart watch ( can plot the incredible change to for eg your heart)

What I can't allow for
Lazy fuckers who don't STICK TO THE PROGRAMME
anyone with health issues - soz, am not a doctor, not interested in your wonky knee..

We start NOW

done two! Cant quite believe it. Second one much slower I think

@iCod Yes, exercise linked to a reduction of risk of all types of dementia. Now I need to up the strength training! Do you have a boot camp for that? 😉

Sorry you're heading down that route with your mum. It was quite the 5 years with mine but she made it to a month shy of 99 in the end.

I'm determined to carry on shuffling into my 70s and beyond.

You can all do it. Proud of each and every one of you and of your inspiring run leader and chief bullier

(Get the waterproof socks. Game changer)

It's not speed. It's COMMITMENT

Sorry. Should have replied better. 99 is amazing. Mine 88, but you do wonder if people are living longer than their bodies can cope!
I do the gym when I can. Weights n shit. Enjoy running more !

Running is certainly much more palatable than the weights stuff.

Mine was mostly furious that she was still alive for the last few year. Feisty to the end!

Here's to all you new runners. You'll be old hands soon and cajoling new newbies along.

Week 1 run 2 done

listened to you good people and slowed down for this one, which helped! Obviously starting at 4mph was madness 🤣

iCod · Today 10:49

Oh good! I need to take my own advice, I'm so kind of into it at the beginning that I find my running gets me going then 3rd km almost dying. Breathe like darth vader

however today just did fastest 5k. This all in ten weeks.

Week 1 Run 2 done.

Continuing with 4k for the walk and 6k for the 'run'.

Did it. Not dead.

I did my 30 minutes of weights beforehand as I am trying to be more time-efficient (and not have to change in and out of kit/shoes more than necessary).

Piggypiggyoinkoink · Today 11:29

I think that’s why I like a treadmill, you know where you are speed wise. Running in the wild I would run to the music beat, and that would not end well.

Appaloosa2000 · Today 11:31

Week one run two done. Next one will be hard as it will have to be before or after work as I don’t get a day off until next week.

ImNotAsCooperativeAsYouMightWantAWomanToBe · Today 11:34

One of the reasons I exercise is definitely the fear of dementia.

Had a nightmare couple of years with mum before I managed to get her settled in a care home as she was unsafe at home on her own. I can sleep at night now and she is thriving (physically). She has no idea who I am now, or really much idea about anything, and in a way that has made it easier as she no longer begs to go home.

She is well fed, well cared for, plays bingo and takes part in singalongs. Coming up 87 soon and bombs around on her walker.

Sympathy to those dealing with it, it's a horrible disease.

iCod · Today 11:45

I've done both before work AND after work and I have found before work (if you get an early night) gives you just a great vibe all day

I had some fairly brutal dentistry yesterday and been told no exercise for a week or two. Not sure how I will cope

AsAnyFuleNo · Today 13:34

<hops up and down and waves hand frantically>

I've done it, Miss! I've been out and bloody done a bloody run this morning when I really, really didn't want to.

I downloaded the couch to 5k app a couple of years ago but found I hate having a voice or music in my ear and would rather listen to the birds and the wind. So I do a madey-uppy version of my own with a very basic running app that measures distance and speed around my preferred route. I amazed myself doing 5k about a year ago but have fallen off the wagon and need bullying to get back on again.

I ran 5 laps of my chosen route today which is 3k. But then had to stop and head home for a 'comfort break' 😳. Next outing Thursday when I aim to better organise my caffeine and bathroom visit do 6 laps.

MinnieMountain · Today 14:37

High five @AsAnyFuleNo ! I've just done my first run too.

Putting my phone in my sports bra was uncomfortable, so I've bought a little running backpack.

Seb Coe suits me well as the voice.

Working out when to run is tricky. I can run before work until the days get really short, but my preferred route is by the river.

iCod · Today 14:38

Fantastic @AsAnyFuleNo I think now you can turn the voice off totally and just check your phone occasionally but. The first few weeks are really easy, you could set an alarm on your phone run 90 minutes or whatever.

OP posts:
iCod · Today 14:38

Oh no @Menopants I never thought of dentistry and exercise being mutually exclusive!

OP posts:
iCod · Today 14:39

What I decided worked @MinnieMountain is a quicker run in the morning during the working week and then really pushing myself to run as far as I can once or twice at the weekend

Top work @MinnieMountain! How lovely to be able to run by a river with Seb. Do you do there and back along the same bank or is a bridge/wading involved?

I run laps round narrow footpaths in local woods and heathland with lots of tree roots and tussocky ground. I'm really slow as I have to watch my footing I'm massively unfit but I love being out in nature and apart from the odd dog walker there's noone there.

I've noticed on Apple Watch if you look at the map of your run afterwards, it shows you where you've gone fast and you just don't know which place by Green and orange

@iCod This thread is really motivating me, thank you.
To everyone posting, you are amazing for getting out there against all instinct and preference.
Week one, run two is booked into my calendar for tomorrow morning. It will happen. 😁

Can I join? I did start the C25K and can't seem to get past week 4. Also, I've been doing it on a treadmill. Is that okay?

If you scroll through the thread you will see a few of us are using a treadmill.

Welcome!

Yes, my basic app has a helpful post run map with speed indicated by green and orange. It's pretty accurate in terms of where I've been and I can even see any 'diversions' into the bushes. I may like looking at it and feeling smug rather too much.
