Lottery Winning Houses

WannaBeAWinner · 22/10/2026 13:21

Controversial opinion, but I actually wouldn't move house if I won the lottery - not even the Euros or Powerball. I love our house, although it does need an extensive amount of work so my winnings would come in handy there. But day to day we don't actually need anywhere bigger, and we love where we are.

But, I would buy other 'holiday' houses. I'm unsure on abroad locations yet, and would spend the first year or two exploring and seeing if I liked anywhere enough to buy anywhere and return regularly.

In the UK I'd like somewhere big enough to host family celebrations and comfortably sleep and entertain 25-30 people. The house is probably more important than the location here.

I'd also like somewhere in Cornwall, near the sea but am unsure on size or exact location.

Depending on the size of the win I'd also buy a central London flat, preferably within walking distance of Covent Garden and with a roof terrace or good sized balcony. 2-3 bedrooms.

What would you pick? Anyone else also choosing to stay in their current house?

Summer seems easy enough, but what are your go to winter destinations in the UK? Even with a lottery win you might not always want to go abroad, sometimes you might want a quiet weekend with the dog and an open fire, windy walks and the local pub.

I like where I live, too! I like my house and its location.

If I suddenly had squillions of pounds I’d like a flat in London, and I’d also like a cottage in the Lake District. And maybe on the Western Isles of Scotland.
Then again, I’d feel guilty about being a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) home owner!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 22/10/2026 15:47

If I win the lottery (which will be a miracle, as I don't play it) I'm buying a house on Princelet street in Spitalfields.

Currently l live in a council flat on a notorious estate. It's nice, it's home and all that, but it's not Princelet Street.

Lavenderbythefrontdoor · 22/10/2026 15:48

I would buy land and build my own home, to my exacting requirements and standards. I'd have laundry chutes, a champagne sink, art deco tiles in the bathrooms. Oh, I'd spend so much lovely time planning it all.

Ideally, I'd have enough land to build several houses, so my children could live near by, if they wanted to. I like the idea of them being round the corner/over the hill etc and the hypothetical grandkids/grand-dogs being able to mosey along to our house in peace and safety.

In terms of holiday homes, I'd love a cabin or cottage, overlooking the sea, in the North of Scotland.

Perhaps a fabulous villa in Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus. I holidayed (sp?) there in 2018 and it was fabulous.

How did I forget the lake district!

I wouldn't feel guilty. My multi million pound flat in London isn't going to solve the housing crisis, and it would actually get used frequently by myself and others. And I could do plenty of other 'good' things with the other millions. I've thought about buying a few standard local houses for kind of emergency refuge situations, people escaping domestic violence etc.

I'm exactly the same, I wouldn't move either as I like my house and neighbours. I would do a few renovations and possibly buy somewhere abroad but otherwise would stay put.

manicmania · 22/10/2026 17:38

its never going to happen to me as I don’t play…but I would move to a house overlooking the sea, with a mountain behind the house and a pretty chilled community. Does that exist?

NeedWineNow · 22/10/2026 18:12

This is one of my frequent daydreams, particularly today as I sit on the sofa wrapped in a blanket nursing a shocking cold and eating Maltesers.

I love our little cottage, and our village, but I'd like somewhere just a little bigger, with a hallway rather than coming straight into the living room, and a driveway or a garage. Parking is at a premium where we are, especially as we have a train station, so we end up parking in the road which is not ideal. I'd also love a separate spare room, rather than our back bedroom where you have a door leading up to the loft, so you can't leave it set up as a bedroom.

I'd like a pied a terre in London for frequent theatre visits, museums, the footie etc. I'd also like a flat by the sea in Dorset or Devon.

WannaBeAWinner · 22/10/2026 20:37

I frequently look at London flats on rightmove on my way to/from work. My current favourite area is around Bloomsbury/Holborn.

I would, funnily enough to a smaller (but newer house). Already I’m feeling like an old lady trying to work my way through it cleaning, garden out of control and everything breaking. Plus I’d prefer to live in town where we can walk places instead of a car journey everywhere

WannaBeAWinner · 22/10/2026 20:44

I'd have a gardener and cleaner/housekeeper so I'm not worried about downsizing.

Incidentally, my DH recently said to me that he doesn't think you can afford a cleaner even if we won £50m. I don't think he can quite grasp how much money that is. The interest alone on that amount of money could pay for a full time cleaner for us and one each for our whole family!!

@WannaBeAWinner
have you seen the omaze house draws??

Doppe · 22/10/2026 20:55

Moving house would be the absolute first thing I’ll do! As soon as the money is in my account, im on to all the estate agents listing my requirements and preferred area. There’s barely a single person I’d miss where I am now and plenty I’d rejoice in leaving behind. Nice little house with lots of land in the countryside for me and some animals. Oh, and a nose job…and go on then, a face lift too - may as well!

WannaBeAWinner · 22/10/2026 21:00

@Besidemyselfwithworry yes- I have entered a couple before. But only the ones I'd actually like to keep - Lake District and Dorset.
I'd be too torn on whether to sell up and pay off our mortgage, renovate etc, or whether to use it as a holiday home and Airbnb it.

I’d buy my neighbours house (currently up for sale). Our house is almost perfect for us - location is perfect, space is almost perfect and the garden could be perfect with a wee bit more space. Buying next door would just make it perfect.

mamaof4losingmymind · 22/10/2026 21:31

I would keep my own home as a base would potentially buy further homes abroad

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 22/10/2026 21:45

I love my little house and wouldn't move.

That said I'd try to buy the fields behind it so I could have a few rescue donkeys and treat them like royalty.

Oh my, that’d be amazing! I adore donkeys so I think I’d have to copy that idea!

Lilypad34 · 23/10/2026 04:38

I would also buy land and build my own nothing massive but including everything I could ever want. I’d then give away the house we live in now but with strict criteria, new owners must be a musical family and be very social because my neighbours are a bloody nightmare with their noisy lot.

Yes! You need to move to the PNW! Plenty of mountains, right by the sea. Or Norway probably.

GarlicEverything · 23/10/2026 05:40

I waste so much going-to-sleep time on this that I could draw maps and plans 😂 NB: I have no money and don't do the lottery.

I'm moving straight out of my adequate, tiny flat in Nowheresville and paying to have my stuff cleared out, deep cleaning and redecorating done to HA specifications. Tabula rasa; I'll leave with two holdalls. I'm moving into a lovely, spacious 2-bed in Zone 1 with either a garden or a huge balcony/terrace facing south. I'm hiring two permanent, capable staff to handle all my needs and home maintenance issues.

For an escape to the country, I need a place of at least one acre, preferably more, on a Mediterranean coast. I'd like Portugal, France or Italy. It must have direct beach access, a fresh water source like a stream or a spring, and a large old house - not a wreck, but already comfortable and amenable to updating. I'll have houses built in a sort of quadrangle, amidst lush green gardens with fruit trees and all that. These will be for guests: family, and I imagine I'll have a lot more friends after winning the lottery I don't do. My extensive staff will also be able to live on site, if they wish.

At times when I'm not using the Med home, it's available for Refuge to send worn-out women and their kids, plus support workers, on a lovely break. I'm covering the costs.

I also have a motor yacht. Not a gin palace, but big enough to accommodate six guests and four crew, who'll be on permanent call.

I'm enjoying this 🤗 Thanks, OP!

Loads of options! Not only the Pacific North-West and Norway but also New Zealand, much of SE Asia, Provence, Greece ... and more including Rio de Janeiro, where I have lived and would again if I were wealthy (but only if!)

Natsku · 23/10/2026 05:49

I would get a summer cottage by a lake, maybe even on its own island (though thinking about it maybe not as the ones on islands are likely to be the very basic sort and I rather fancy having running water, electricity, and a proper toilet)

I would buy a flat in the nearest city for DD to live in when she goes to high school there and a flat in Helsinki we can stay in for weekends and suchlike.

Then I'd rent out an entire country hotel in the uk for a weekend and have a big family reunion (we once did it, but with a much cheaper youth hostel)

I like where we live, its a home that has been in my husbands family for a long time, we also wouldn’t want to move the kids again, so we wouldn’t move. However when we left the UK we couldn’t afford to keep our flat there, so I would see the if the new owner was willing to sell it back to us.
