Why do some of my former international friends seem oddly entitled to the lifestyle I have now, even though our circumstances aren't the same?

For example, I work in the UK, live quite frugally, stayed with family for years, and have had support from my mum. Yet occasionally I'll get comments implying I should be paying for things, sharing money, or that my financial situation is somehow unfair.
What confuses me is that if I said I wanted to marry a prince, inherit a castle, or otherwise jump several social classes overnight, most people would laugh and tell me life doesn't work that way. But when it comes to someone else's lifestyle, some people seem to think they're entitled to the same outcome regardless of differences in family support, career choices, country, luck, opportunities, or sacrifices made along the way.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it envy, cultural differences around wealth and sharing, or am I reading too much into it? I'm genuinely curious why some people seem to view another person's lifestyle as something they're owed access to.

No idea what you're on about.
Your friends want you to give them money? Then they're not friends, they're scammers or scroungers.

And what's being 'international' got to do with it?

I don’t really understand, but of course it is noone else’s business how you live your life, unless you are adversely impacting them, or they care deeply about you and have concerns.

honeylulu · 19/10/2026 19:04

What are these lifestyle outcomes they want you to share? Because living frugally, staying with family (whilst nothing to be ashamed of) doesn't really sound enviable! Have you missed out a paragraph or something?

TremendousFlatulence · 19/10/2026 19:16

Oh God. Will it never end?

Your friend see you as freeloading CFr …. They aren’t envious.

Guessed the OP just from the title.

Do think about getting some fresh air.

JoyChansey · 20/10/2026 08:43

At least they're now "former" friends.

Hopefully you now have nothing to do with them any more.

I'm guessing it's down to cultural differences around wealth and sharing.

I have friends who earn a lot more than me, some 3x as much. I would always pay my share (sometimes over, which I'm not bothered about) when we go out and it would never even cross my mind to take advantage in any way simply because they can "appear" to afford it.

This is just word salad. No examples, just weird riddles and a pointless question at the end that nobody cares about.

If you arent actually going to write something that makes sense then why bother? Yawn.

Her mummy gave her £100k but she forgot to add it to her OP.

Oh that one 🤯

CraftySeal · 21/10/2026 11:08

What does "former international friends" mean? People who live abroad and used to be your friends? Or people who used to live abroad but now live in the UK and are currently your friends?
