Why do some of my former international friends seem oddly entitled to the lifestyle I have now, even though our circumstances aren't the same?

For example, I work in the UK, live quite frugally, stayed with family for years, and have had support from my mum. Yet occasionally I'll get comments implying I should be paying for things, sharing money, or that my financial situation is somehow unfair.
What confuses me is that if I said I wanted to marry a prince, inherit a castle, or otherwise jump several social classes overnight, most people would laugh and tell me life doesn't work that way. But when it comes to someone else's lifestyle, some people seem to think they're entitled to the same outcome regardless of differences in family support, career choices, country, luck, opportunities, or sacrifices made along the way.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it envy, cultural differences around wealth and sharing, or am I reading too much into it? I'm genuinely curious why some people seem to view another person's lifestyle as something they're owed access to.

What?

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 19/10/2026 12:11

I don't understand what you're asking?

Youlostyourlemons · 19/10/2026 12:43

So you are loaded because you have been a skinflint and your friends abroad want this lifestyle?

grinandslothit · 19/10/2026 12:47

Stop hanging out with them. It doesn't sound like they're your friends anymore

Daygloboo · 19/10/2026 12:47

Because money isnt everything and sharing sometimes is nice but you dont have to so it's a non issue. Soeppl think like that and you dont. Nobody. right or wrong just different values. End of story.

Yes, makes me wonder how much work this person actually does.

Her mummy gave her £100k but she forgot to add it to her OP.

Somersetbaker · 19/10/2026 16:14

I suspect they are trying to justify their own spending decisions. There was a certain amount of jealousy that I was able to retire early, I could afford it because I didn't have 2 long haul holidays a year, a new expensive car every couple of years or the latest phone.

TheSpottedZebra · 19/10/2026 16:25

This person is all over reddit aswell, posting the exact same stuff.

I suspect quite a lot of it is bullshit.

Eh? I don’t understand.

It's that sweet spot where bullshit meets meltdown, I think.

Gosh, their employer must be delighted.

Haven't we suffered enough?

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 19/10/2026 17:48

Who knows what you’re talking about 🤣🤣 Is this rage bait? Are you saying your friends abroad are begging money from you??

Morrisdancer24 · 19/10/2026 18:26

Nobody cares. You are getting extremely boring now. I very much doubt anyone is envious of you because of shit like this.

This makes no sense. I feel like you’ve missed some vital information out

BugJuice · 19/10/2026 18:48

There’s no point engaging, this poster rarely bothers to come back to their own threads with anything meaningful.
When asked why they don’t come back and engage, on another thread, they said ‘CBA TBH’.

FiveEightNine · 19/10/2026 18:53

Family support, country, luck, opportunities...

It is interesting to see a poster who acknowledge that this aspects play significant role in their outcomes - but doesn't realise that they are not any kind of personal achievement.

It's funny, because they have a different thread saying the exact opposite

CleanShirt · 19/10/2026 18:56

Is it because you harp on about the £100k you got? Or was that just for us?
