If you were meeting up with a friend you literally haven’t seen in over 25 years, would you bring a Christmas gift? ( we’re meeting up early December)

We were best friends from around the age of 5 to about 16/ 17. ( Thread title should probably say ‘old’ friend )
We lost touch ( got married, moved away etc )
But through the magic of FB we recently reconnected.
I’m not sure whether to bring a little gift?
I don’t want to embarrass her if she hasn’t got me anything, but equally I don’t want to feel embarrassed if she brings me something and I haven’t.
WWYD?

I would probably bring her a book or something, but I wouldn't mind if she didn't bring me anything. Have fun!

JustWalnut · 17/10/2026 18:25

No, it wouldn't occur to me to!

Vicliz24 · 17/10/2026 18:26

I’d take a token yes. A candle or maybe nice bubble bath. Just enough not to stress about if she does or doesnt reciprocate.

NuffSaidSam · 17/10/2026 18:27

No, I wouldn't.

LivingTheDreamish · 17/10/2026 18:29

No need at all for a gift. It wouldn't occur to me either.

UncleTed · 17/10/2026 18:29

No, I wouldn’t take a gift.

Itsthewoluff · 17/10/2026 18:32

If I was going to her house I’d take flowers. If it’s somewhere neutral, I wouldn’t bother.

sonjadog · 17/10/2026 18:33

No, I wouldn't take a gift.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2026 18:34

No. I only give to family members and I wouldn't want to start a precedent.

Scarlettpixie · 17/10/2026 18:34

I wouldn’t no.

Branleuse · 17/10/2026 18:34

No I wouldn't

Definitely dont bring her a book! Unless you're absolutely sure what she likes.
Otherwise no i dont really think its necessary

Another vote for no gift! Surprise gifts are often embarrassing.

Ribenaberry12 · 17/10/2026 18:39

I would take a little gift. I moved away in my 20s and when I go ‘home’ I often take friends a jar of local jam or a local beer or chocolates or something. Something small but that they can’t easily get where they are.

Ilmiocompleanno · 17/10/2026 18:42

No, it wouldn't occur to me to bring a Christmas gift.

5128gap · 17/10/2026 18:55

I might take something small that was a bit of a momento. Framed photo of the two of you as kids, or something. Something that's fits in your bag so you can decide whether it feels right at the time.

MerylSqueak · 17/10/2026 18:57

Maybe a Christmas bauble with 2026 on it would be a cute to celebrate the reunion.

Advocodo · 17/10/2026 18:58

Probably not unless there was something you remember, like a sweet or chocolate that she/you adored!

Freedom29 · 17/10/2026 18:59

No it wouldn’t cross my mind to unless she was hosting, and then it would be for that not a Christmas gift.

chubley · 17/10/2026 18:59

Last year I did this at the end of November after a similar length of time and went to her home town for the day (not her home), and neither of us brought a gift.

PermanentTemporary · 17/10/2026 19:00

Agree with @5128gap - a memento. Picture of you together (I might not even frame it) or something else that recalls the time you knew each other best. If I were meeting up with my best school friend I might take a ‘choose your own adventure’ book which we both loved for example.

randomname72 · 17/10/2026 19:00

How about a tree decoration? Something that you both loved from your teenage years and buy one for both out you. I have some that friends and family have bought me as surprises and I always think of them fondly as I dress the tree and it’s a couple of quid.

Leeds2 · 17/10/2026 19:00

I don’t think a gift is necessary.

If you want to, maybe a photo album with pictures of you together back in the day. And a bag of pineapple chunks, or whatever your go to snack was.

Pedicureplease · 17/10/2026 19:01

I would bring a little token something and just keep in my bag. Then if she gets you something - happy days, you can exchange without any awkwardness. If not and you feel it would be awkward to give her the gift, you can just keep it in your bag ☺️

tomorrowfollowstoday · 17/10/2026 19:01

No gift, because you don't know what she likes, what her diet is, what her personal ethics are.
