Am I being petty husband wouldn’t help with dinner over a video game ?

Long story short, I’m under investigation for unexplained worsening back pain that’s causing me pain daily. We have a Ninja double air fryer that’s quite heavy and is kept in cupboard due to no counter space. It hurts my back every time I get out so asked husband if we can buy a smaller one that can be kept out. He said just ask me to get it out from now on.

Had to use it last night so went to ask him to get it out. He refused as he was in the middle of a computer game and he said I should have given him more notice .

Im livid. if it was his mum who was cooking him dinner he would have done it straight away. I’ve never had a problem with him being a gamer, but it seems nowdays his gaming comes before everything else.

Am I being petty over last night? He’s knows I’m not happy so I’m waiting for the “ you’re being horrible /aggressive to me “ and I’ll have to apologise for “my behaviour”later probably.

Because I would have gotten in the neck that his dinner would have been late and that would be my fault

Sounds like you have bigger problems than getting a ninja out of the cupboard.

Those things are meant to be kept out, they're too heavy to lug about. Go and get the one you want, it doesn't have to be a ninja and you don't need his permission.

Also who cares if he's teas late? Let him bloody whinge.

frostypumpkins · 17/10/2026 13:04

I have a similar problem OP; so I would not be happy.
I would have made myself ( and kids if you have them) a sandwich, let 'gamer' get his own, and then I would spend some time thinking of things to make, other than sandwiches, that could be 'made for one ( or whatever) but not for the one who values gaming over your health and putting food on the table--speaking of table, get one for the Ninja, or get yourself a smaller unit.

As someone who sometimes gets quite absorbed in computer games, I can understand that your husband was reluctant to interrupt his game to get the air fryer out of it would have only meant a short delay to dinner. I don’t really see why a 20 minute delay to dinner would matter?

That really is ridiculous. And unattractive.

hotmumshit · 17/10/2026 17:17

Eww

Leave him, is this really the life you want?

Don’t apologise for anything and stop cooking for him. Leave it out on the counter.

EmmaB1309 · 17/10/2026 21:30

He’s a dick, surely most games are pauseable?
And why do you need permission to buy a smaller, more practical airfryer? Not sure I could be bothered humphing the airfryer out each time I wanted to use it, bad back or not.

Catty21 · 17/10/2026 11:16

In a way yes I am and I don’t know why.

Can you see that this isn’t really about an air fryer or video games?

20 minutes is a long time to wait while an overgrown child plays a game instead of just helping their injured spouse as they promised they would.

You really think it's ok to prioritise a computer game over a person??

Pardon?!?

you poor thing

hididdlyho · 17/10/2026 21:42

1 He sounds like a nob.
2 it sounds like he isn't involved in meal prep, so I would just order the smaller model you can have out all the time. If he complains about the cost, suggest asking his mummy to sell the larger version for her baby as he's clearly too busy gaming to think about his wife and son.

tealandteal · 17/10/2026 21:49

Fine for him to say in 5 minutes or whatever but to refuse?! This is unreasonable for any reason but if you feel he would complain if the dinner (all of them, not just his) were late as a result of his actions that is very unfair and probably speaks of a bigger picture and problem. I say that as someone who is not massively into games but my DH is.

VoltaireMittyDream · 17/10/2026 22:00

He’s awful.

Also, lovely to see the usual defensive gamers on here saying a 20 minute delay to the family’s evening meal categorically should not be a problem, because why shouldn’t the world and everyone in it wouldn’t be happy to stand still until they’re good and ready to put the controller down? And it will definitely only by 20 minutes, and not 9 hours during which time they’ll lose their shit at anyone who dares to suggest they’ve been at it a while now and might benefit from taking a break.

Coconutter24 · 17/10/2026 22:09

I wouldn’t have waited if I was hungry, I’d just the oven instead. Why do you need to ask him to buy a smaller air fryer, why can’t you go out and buy one or order online?

Parker231 · 17/10/2026 22:12

Catty21 · 17/10/2026 10:42

He refused. Waiting would have ment hanging on 20 or so minutes so son would have eaten dinner late other wise

If you’re struggling with a bad back, why isn’t he doing the cooking? I hope he’s doing the laundry and cleaning.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/10/2026 00:11

OK so you can’t buy a smaller fryer. Because he says so. You can’t get it out. Because you’re in pain. You can’t cook dinner without it. He won’t get it for you. But you can’t delay dinner. Again, because of him. And he would get it out for his mum, someone he actually loves and cares about.

You see that he’s a dreadful person, right?

sittingonabeach · 18/10/2026 00:19

The airfryer is the least of your problems.

You should never be scared of your husband

Nearly50omg · 18/10/2026 00:19

He’s an abusive cunt! get him out of your house and away from you and your children!!

LondonLass2026 · 18/10/2026 00:24

My God, gamers are fucking annoying.

Op, please reassess this relationship. He sounds very abusive.

seahorsessky · 18/10/2026 00:27

Normally, if someone's into games, I'd not interrupt, as long as they respect my hobbie, but you specifically asked him about this, so he should have done it. If you'd just decided on a whim to ask when he'd just started gaming, that's different.

BrendaHollowayWhenImGoneNsoul · 18/10/2026 01:20

What an excuse for a human being

ToKittyornottoKitty · 17/10/2026 10:39

Did he refuse to get it out at all or did he want you to wait until that game had finished?

That's what she said

It matters when you have kids who get hungry! Maybe their dad should put them first over gaming! 🙄
