old school Sooty Show - any other enjoyers here?

I've always been a fan of Sooty but I've now found a lot of it is on YouTube and lately I've been putting episodes on for my kids. 70s through to 90s with Matthew Corbett. It's funny I've never seen this show on any lists on social media of "low stimulation" shows for kids even when they do list other old shows. I think the low-stimulation is on a another level! Part of that is because it's puppets they have to stay behind a piece of furniture and camera angle changes have to be really limited. The other thing is that only Matthew and Soo speak intelligibly, so everything Sooty and Sweep say has to be translated, which means a load of pauses are baked into the dialogue while half the lines are said twice! It's so brilliant for my kids to put on in the evening after dinner to wind down, both my 8 year and 2 year old enjoy it. I also love that their antics are exactly the kind of thing little kids would get up to in real life, I know Matthew had 3 kids when he was writing this show, and it comes through in the writing. And he's such a realistic parent because he comes across as slightly exhausted and irritated by everything they do 😆 I don't know of any other kids shows like that. Are there any other fans here?

I loved it and can remember that when I was in Year 6, I used to hurry home every Tuesday to watch it. 😳 I found it very funny. It was the Matthew era, with Sooty, Sweep, Soo and later, Little Cousin Scampi. My best friend loved Bodger and Badger which was arguably just as daft.

UnderThePressure · 16/10/2026 23:00

I loved Sooty as a kid. Sweep is my spirit animal!
My husband bought me some vintage soft toys of Sooty, Sweep and Soo for my birthday recently and they sit on the back of my sofa. I'm 48! 😂

ahhh also a big fan. When I was younger I always used to say I wanted a sooty van to drive. 🤣

Saw the live show once and actually met Sooty and his assistant at a TV show.

Living the dream!

I’m a big Sweep fan, he has a big following on FB

VanilleFraise · 17/10/2026 12:31

I will say, I do like Richard. We also saw them on tour in 2014 and it was a fantastic show. Did the meet and greet. It was my son's 5th birthday and I thanked Richard for making it special and he was really humbled by the comment and said that he just loved doing sooty and loved making kids smile. Very happy memory.

fridaynightzzz · 17/10/2026 12:34

DD loves sooty, we saw them live 3 times! Richard was incredibly nice when we met him and he told the staff to stop rushing the kids through and spoke to everyone.

MyDadIsTheGreatest · 17/10/2026 12:47

I saw them in person when they came to our local theatre!

TonTonMacoute · 17/10/2026 13:06

I loved them and was taken to see the live show, with Harry Corbett, back in the 1960s. I had a little Sooty glove puppet with a little magic wand which I loved.

I remember watching this episode of Antiques Roadshow when someone brought in some Sooty memorabilia and Ronnie Archer-Morgan became very emotional about the memories it brought back from his childhood in care.

"In 2017, Archer-Morgan revealed his childhood care history during an episode of Antiques Roadshow. A prop maker’s daughter brought in the original Sooty and Sweep hand puppets from the 1950s. Archer-Morgan shared fond memories of when a puppeteer named Harry Corbett (1918-1989) had visited his children’s home in 1955. He was the creator of Sooty and Sweep, and brought his puppets to home which Ronnie was allowed to play with. It was one of the happiest moments of his childhood."

I love Sweep and how you can understand everything he says.

I am now lucky enough to have a dog that looks like sweep and DD has to agree after getting addicted to watching it on YouTube🤣

You're so lucky.

My husband winds me up he met Sooty, Dooby Duck AND Orville and Cuddles.
Makes me feel quite deprived 😂

Sweep is having a bit of a moment of Facebook.

Knitterlybliss · 17/10/2026 14:23

Oh yes,I loved the original Sooty. I still have the glove puppet my mum bought me when I was 5. It was 8 shillings in old money.
I took my son to see the Matthew Corbett Sooty show in Poole, which is near HarryCorbett's home village. I was more excited than is reasonable for an adult when Harry Corbett (obviously Sooty's real dad) appeared in the cafe during the interval.

MeOldBamboo · 17/10/2026 14:37

My cousin worked on the Sooty Show film with Richard Cadell and her friend is the puppeter and drives the van. She drove it to her parents house and everyone got very excited in the village when it pulled up.
The film is very funny and has a wonderful version of Sweep doing Lady Gaga!

Took my kid to see the show in 2014. It was great. Afterwards there was a free meet and greet to meet Sooty and Richard.
I am a life long fan of Sweep and his crazyness. I used to watch the show when I was far too old for it in the early 90s, the Matthew era.

I took my daughter when she was about 2. She got too shy right as we got to the front of the queue to meet him I have a lovely picture of me, sooty and Richard 😂

Could never stand Soo she totally spoilt it

She was such a fun sponge.

Sweep, on the other hand, is the GOAT. Chaos embodied.

Davros · 17/10/2026 16:41

I am going out tonight to see an old punk band (999), one of my oldest mates is playing bass. Sweep is coming too

I used to like it, I’m older and remember the father being the puppeteer.

B0D · 17/10/2026 17:15

It’s all about Sweep for me though!

That squeaky little voice she had....

TheChosenTwo · 17/10/2026 18:15

Well I haven’t thought of the programme in about 30 years - I enjoyed it at the time!
But the one I used to like the most was Henry’s cat - so simple, silly, basic cartoons that were short. I tried to encourage my dc to watch them years ago on YouTube but they weren’t convinced 😂

purpleme12 · 17/10/2026 18:15

I remember Sooty and Sweep!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/10/2026 20:32

Who knew Sooty had so many fans, OP? 😄

And he has a shop!

We saw the Sooty show live on a P&O cruise a few years ago and my then 8 year old absolutely LOVED it. He was laughing so much I loved it too. Although it wasn’t one of my favourites as a child (I am early 50s).

Ohcrap082024 · 17/10/2026 20:44

I loved Sooty as a child in the early 80s. Both my dc also loved the Richard era and they had photos taken with Richard, Sooty and Sweep after a live show.

We now have a dog who is very Sweep like.

I think Sooty was one of the best TV shows around because it essentially introduced very young children to comedy. I bet the vast majority of today’s top comedians watched Sooty as a child. Very underrated.

I remember that, wasn’t it marvellous! He said Harry Corbett made him feel acknowledged and worth attention, not an everyday occurrence at that time in his life.
