old school Sooty Show - any other enjoyers here?

I've always been a fan of Sooty but I've now found a lot of it is on YouTube and lately I've been putting episodes on for my kids. 70s through to 90s with Matthew Corbett. It's funny I've never seen this show on any lists on social media of "low stimulation" shows for kids even when they do list other old shows. I think the low-stimulation is on a another level! Part of that is because it's puppets they have to stay behind a piece of furniture and camera angle changes have to be really limited. The other thing is that only Matthew and Soo speak intelligibly, so everything Sooty and Sweep say has to be translated, which means a load of pauses are baked into the dialogue while half the lines are said twice! It's so brilliant for my kids to put on in the evening after dinner to wind down, both my 8 year and 2 year old enjoy it. I also love that their antics are exactly the kind of thing little kids would get up to in real life, I know Matthew had 3 kids when he was writing this show, and it comes through in the writing. And he's such a realistic parent because he comes across as slightly exhausted and irritated by everything they do 😆 I don't know of any other kids shows like that. Are there any other fans here?

My mum and I both love the Sooty Show! Sat here with sooty and sweep slippers on right now - they were in Primark about 10 or so years ago! I was born in 84 so mainly watched in late 80s.

Classic episodes here wjth Harry Corbett, father of Matthew, who started Sooty.

4 year old DGD loves Sooty but the more recent version. They live on a caravan holiday park - other than that it's much the same as it always was. Hundreds of episodes on ITVx

Thank you, that's spurred me to watch one of these. I admit I didn't seek them out because it's not my own nostalgia, but I know my mum loved the Harry episodes when she was little. This is very charming. Harry seems much happier to be there, unlike the more world-weary Matthew!

Have you seen the one on YouTube with Sweep splashing around in the bathtub and giggling to himself. It's really funny! I'm 42 years old

Pedallleur · 16/10/2026 18:38

Saw the live show once and actually met Sooty and his assistant at a TV show.

Specialneedsnightmare · 16/10/2026 18:40

I used to love it. There was an episode when Sweep dreamed he was Super dog and another when Sooty wanted to be an actor and they all wrote a play which only 2 girls went to. Those stood out for me.

ForTipsyFinch · 16/10/2026 18:41

I used to love this 😀

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 16/10/2026 18:43

We used to watch the original Sooty shows and the other morning before starting the clearing up I said to myself 'Izzy wizzy let's get busy!'

No IDEA why that came into my brain after years....

Benshawsberries · 16/10/2026 18:45

Could never stand Soo she totally spoilt it

Happymchappyface · 16/10/2026 18:45

I loved The Sooty Show as a kid. We went to the live show for my birthday most years.

Not to mention Ramsbottom the snake. I prefer the Ur-Sooty, the one for purists, Sooty, Sweep and Harry C. Don't improve on perfection, people.

MrsKateColumbo · 16/10/2026 18:52

My kids LOVE the caravan park one, i couldn't find the Matthew ones on YT, I used to love sooty and co. The camper van occupies my thoughts often haha

I like how low stimulation it is, the joyous humour is perfect. Every time I go to the natural history museum I think of them.

Bye bye everybody bye bye

MarcusBrigstockesfringe · 16/10/2026 18:53

Sooty and sweep were brilliant.

I served Matthew Corbett his dinner in a pub in about 1996 when I was 18.

Then I met my husband who actually went to a party where Corbett and Co were the hired entertainment. So he won!

I saw a live Sooty Show in the early 1960s, I think at Mablethorpe. One of my earliest memories - I tried to walk to the front to shake hands with Sooty, but I was just toddling and I kept falling over. By the time I got to the front, the show was over.

I know someone who worked on the shows (tech side) with MC. He's even in one episode driving his van.
He said he was a lovely man.

Sooty and Sweep was the first thing I saw at a theatre. It was when we were on holiday in great Yarmouth, and I had just turned 2yo
The theatre had windmill sails on and I was really impressed by the red velvet seats. I was disappointed to find I couldn't get my binoculars out (they cost 5p) and the lady in front of me let me have a go.
I can remember quite a lot from the show too!

I love it! There’s a great TikTok account called SweepTok, which I highly recommend.

SwizzlesTwizzles · 16/10/2026 21:09

I used to go to the live shows every year when I was a kid. We had front row seats one year so I wore my best dress hoping they would pick me to play a game on stage but they picked my sister, a grumpy preteen in a Take That t-shirt instead 🥺

Soo was a bit of a pill sometimes. Her character varies through the decades and seems to reflect the status of women in society and the state of feminism in that era. I could write an essay on that one.

Took my kid to see the show in 2014. It was great. Afterwards there was a free meet and greet to meet Sooty and Richard.
I am a life long fan of Sweep and his crazyness. I used to watch the show when I was far too old for it in the early 90s, the Matthew era.

chucklebrother · 16/10/2026 22:10

Have a look at houseofjabba on instagram it's basically Sweep going mental to loads of 90s songs, my favourite thing in the world 😅

ElixirMaker · 16/10/2026 22:15

I loved Sweep. This is where he is falling asleep in the bath and Sooty puts ice cubes in to keep him awake. He decides he is cold and will get out but then Soo tells him all the boys and girls are watching. Hilarious.

I also have a saved one from TikTok where Soo is teaching Sweep elocution lessons, his inflections in his little voice when he repeats Soo's words makes me smile.

Oh it’s so funny, there are lots of clips on Tik Tok. I remember it well as a child too. I loved the one where Sweep was desperate for a wee on a coach ride and they had to stop the coach, you got to see his little legs as he hopped off.
