Cultural Day at Primary School

Looking for ideas! Not a political debate.

it’s Cultural appreciation Day next week at my son’s school, there’s quite a lot of different backgrounds that his classmates are coming from (only 15 in the class but it’s a southeast London borough) and we are actually in a bit of a minority being white British.

But they want parents to be involved which is very nice and it happens to be a day I’m not working, so they’re inviting us to come in and do a 5-10 min activity and take some traditional food from your culture to a class lunch.

As I say we are just English. Not even any Scottish or Irish or Welsh or things that are widely celebrated. I suppose it’s just making me wonder if it’s ‘ok’ to outwardly celebrate being white British without causing any offence (please no Reform-esque debates here I am trying to navigate it appropriately!

What do I do? Learn morris dancing? Dress as a Pearly Queen 😂

I thought about just reading a Paddington Bear book and making some marmalade sandwiches but is that a bit lame?

DS is only in reception by the way so they’re all very small obviously and they’re still all getting to know each other as a class.

Paddington idea is the winner. Unless there's a child from Peru in the class and they've done it first 😃

I agree. I work with young children. Reception age need something simple. They can make their own marmalade sandwich - and eat it or leave it. Pick a simple part of the Paddington story. Culture celebrated. Job done.

I do love your suggestion about Paddington and marmalade sandwiches @DancingonmyOwn88

So soothing and welcoming.

Potted shrimp sandwiches and a tub of jellied eels?

And a chat about the fabulous finds along the Thames which highlights the very colourful history of London.

This comment is quite mean. Shows sense of superiority is in all cultures. Op, can you take some dessert.

At least Paddington is fully clothed. Not disporting himself about in some kind of cropped top and nothing else like Pooh.

That's the daft Disney one. The real Winney the Pooh is naked, as a bear should be.

How sad that you feel you can't celebrate your culture in your own country without feeling you may offend someone!

Where in England are you from? Don't you have local foods and customs?

How sad that you feel you can't celebrate your culture in your own country without feeling you may offend someone!

That’s very true.

It was sarcasm and not at all meant to be taken seriously. Goodness me. Potted shrimp is lovely though but not for reception age.

Love the suggestion of marmalade sandwiches and Paddington Bear. Very fit for purpose of a reception class.

Queenofseed · 16/10/2026 13:49

Your Paddington idea is brilliant 👏 stop worrying and get your marmalade made

Quoting myself for the hard of understanding. It's NOT suitable and was meant as sarcasm.

Although I find the migration of eels and the life cycle totally amazing.

This is one of those views I see on Mumsnet regularly and absolutely never encounter in real life. Our school has a cultural food day every year where parents bring in food (including hot food in our case) from their culture. It makes more money than any event except the summer fair, is extremely busy and zero complaints. I just don't know anyone who would think like this.

Same - my kids have been in 4 schools between them and all did cultural days where you brought food in. And when I was a girl, we'd also bring food into school. Growing up in the midlands this meant lots of yummy pakoras and samosas in my belly, yum yum. It's a nice tradition.

I love eels! No eels will be consumed as part of my Cultural Appreciation Day!

Peak freans by any chance?

Yes I think so.
Factory is long gone now as far as I know.

Not according to Ernest Shepherd the illustrator.
Edit: actually it varies.

ElBandito · 16/10/2026 14:19

I think your idea is perfect, and the sandwich is a British culinary invention after all. You could slip in the Earl of Sandwich and mention he invented it when ahem he didn't want to stop playing (ahem) a 'nice quiet game of cards' with his friends.

Needmorelego · 16/10/2026 14:20

Ernest Shepherd illustrations.
Naked and not naked 😁

Ah that’s Crystal Palace, Bromley Borough end. I love those dinosaurs though! They’ve polished them up recently and they look great.

Rhyming slang / idiomatic expressions is a great idea by a PP.
Raining cats and dogs
Crammed in like sardines
Mind your own beeswax
Wailing like a banshee (scottish?)
Would be adorable, especially if lots of the kids' parents are not native English speakers.

We did the "The Great British Scone Debate".

Introduction to British tradition of Afternoon Tea centered around the scones.

The Introduction - a brief child friendly introduction to British tea culture and how people enjoy a cozy afternoon break with tea and scones.

The Debate Devon vs. Cornwall - introduce the historic light-hearted British rivalry regarding how to dress a scone.
The Devon Way - Cream first then jam.
The Cornwall Way - Jam first then cream.

Ask the children to vote by a show of hands on which method they think sounds the best.
The children receive precut mini scones and get to assemble their own based on whether they voted for the Devon or Cornwall method.

Precut?

Nonsense you need to pull them apart. I saw it on the telly this week.

Make a crown
have a teddy bears picnic
teach them ‘oranges and lemons’ or London Bridge is falling down
Bring in a big paper double decker bus and get them to draw themselves and add themselves to the windows
Do something about guy Fawkes
