Am I being a prat re Aldi cashier ?

I sometimes nip into Aldi if I finish work if I I’m on a 9 finish and need wine or whatever.
Often there is a cashier who has been quite chatty (male) just normal ‘have you just finished work and next time it was what do you do ? I get it, the store is quiet at that time so maybe he’s bored and is just trying to make friendly conversation.
Last week I went to the self serve bit and he was able to verify my alcohol purchase from his till.
He then proceeded to tell me he was able to see what I’d bought and started listing it, which I have to say made me feel uncomfortable.
Last night I whizzed in and bought a pizza, and went to the self serve bit, he appeared out of nowhere and said ‘Oh having an easy pizza dinner are we’
He’s putting me off going in.

That does sound irritating and exhausting @MurphysColeslaw

I would find another Aldi to go to for a while - or get your pizza and booze from elsewhere for a while.

He probably fancies you, and is trying to be funny and engaging, but all he's doing is annoying you.

I HATE it when cashiers comment on what I'm buying. It's not their place.

And no, I'm not being a snob, or looking down on cashiers (before anyone says anything,) I just don't like it. Just do your job please, and put my stuff through.

I wish that's all I had to worry about in life.....

Why do people use this response? it's pointless, derailing and adds nothing. And it isn't smart, either, for those of you who think it is.

chirrupybird · 16/10/2026 10:20

Our guy at the click and collect is really friendly and chatty, but absolutely harmless. But I remember a guy in a shop once that I thought was overly familiar and I did stop going there, it just didn't feel right not quite a leer but weird somehow.

This exactly. Just because someone gets annoyed by something fairly trivial, that doesn't mean they haven't got other stuff in their life to worry them.

loratadine · 16/10/2026 10:23

The staff in Aldi are too busy to stand around reeling off lists of what people are buying. Are you sure this happened?

No I made it up , what with having nothing else to worry about and all that. Ffs 🙄

Got someone like this in my local M&S. Genuinely lovely chap but I don't have the time to chat. If I go to self serve he shouts across and asks if I'm avoiding him!

(yes)

MilkBreadToiletroll · 16/10/2026 10:35

Bit different to this, but two male cashiers were chatting as one was serving me. One was saying about his gaming hobby, and the other told him he really should experience the real world, feel the wind on his face, and inhale the scent of a woman. Was very funny and I wasn't expecting it. Really tickled me.

Iliketulips · 16/10/2026 10:41

Personally, I think he's just trying to be friendly and make you feel welcome (even if he's not quite getting it right). There's a lot if pressure on some staff in shops to make people welcome. I'd rather someone like him than someone who comes across as being rude.

I think he has edged over a line by listing your purchases, it sounds as though he is monitoring you. It's fine to chat about someone's purchases as they go through the till (excepting medical or sensitive items such as contraceptives) - like asking if a food item is nice or how you're planning to use an ingredient, but it shouldn't come across as an ongoing audit and critique of your shopping.

It's difficult as he might just be trying to be friendly and getting it a bit wrong. I would try to avoid him if you can, but if it escalates it might be time for a quiet word with a supervisor.

I agree with this. its the "knowing what you have previously bought" that crosses the line for me. I am assuming you have a loyalty card there?

and from another post, commenting on a condom purchase is wayyyyyyyy beyond acceptable.

in my personal experience, the more stress there is in my life, the more the small things add to it.

PrancingPanda · 16/10/2026 10:59

He's overstepping boundaries OP.
Doubt if he'd comment on a man's shopping. As for listing your items- bordering on creepy.

HideousKinky · 16/10/2026 11:13

This reminds me of the Caroline Aherne character in The Fast Show who commented on everything the customer bought 😂

mondaytosunday · 16/10/2026 11:16

This is hardly anything to think twice about! I had a woman in Tesco who asked me if I lived in X house as she’d seen me in the driveway. I said yes and it seemed to mean that she felt we knew each other and so would always come up to me when using the scan and go tils for a chat. It’s true after a while it was a bit annoying but it never occurred to me to stop going! Like you said he’s probably a bit bored and is just feeling friendly. Smile benignly and forget about it!

Happysnappydays · 16/10/2026 11:19

He sounds socially awkward to me, and has probably been told to engage with customers and is going about it the wrong way.
I wouldn't like it either though!

SL2924 · 16/10/2026 11:20

He’s just being friendly. I think the influence of social media, covid etc is making society very insular - viewing what would have been normal human connections as some kind of threat.

Lilacspring · 16/10/2026 11:24

I don't like that ,it's happened to me ,I picked a different supermarket.

If you genuinely believe that posting on MN means you're only worried about that thing, then you must have an even easier life to only be concerned with what other people are worrying about.

Or perhaps you know full well it's possible to worry about multiple things and not include all of them every time you post on a forum.

Thistooshallpsss · 16/10/2026 11:34

Blimey I chat to everyone everywhere mumsnet must really hate people like me !!

NimbleTaupeTiger · 16/10/2026 11:41

MurphysColeslaw · 16/10/2026 09:26

I have actually got far more to worry about .

Yeah, but it's just damned annoying isn't it?

There's a woman at our Tesco who imparts her wisdom on how I've swiped incorrectly or whatever and lectures/trains how to do it right when clearly it's the machine that's malfunctioning.

She is unfortunately not very bright and I look at her and think "you are so thick, why are you stating the bleeding obvious to me?" and I smile and say "thanks for your help".

😂😂

Sewingbeedamned · 16/10/2026 11:41

Yes, you are over reacting, if this is all he’s doing.

mcmuffin22 · 16/10/2026 11:41

He sounds really awkward. Why would anyone think that reeling off what you'd bought would be amusing or appropriate. Odd. I would pretend to be on the phone every time I went to the till (as I too an awkward😆).

42goingon14 · 16/10/2026 11:44

I would probably find this mildly irritating too but I would smile and nod because I think on balance it's nice that people are chatty and friendly and also seem to enjoy their job.

Go to a different shop, or go to that shop at a different time.

So she has to change her routine or make her life more difficult to avoid being made uncomfortable by a man?
