Take toddler away with us or leave with grandparents? Help!

I can’t decide. I’d feel really guilty for DS to miss out, though he is a young 2 and would not have any concept of whether he is going or not. If I told him he’d be happy to go but also probably just as happy at home.

It’s in a weeks time so don’t have long to decide and my parents have just incredibly kindly offered, out the blue, to take him so we can have the weekend to ourselves.

We’d be going a couple of hours away for two nights to an Airbnb with a hot tub. The plan is to do national trust sites, a pumpkin patch, maybe a children’s place like a nice farm park, pub lunches, that sort of thing. There’s a hot tub too.

I have mum guilt at the idea of not taking him as there are things he would genuinely enjoy. He loves outdoors and anything Halloween related. Equally, we never get the time as a couple on that level. Also we are at full blown tantrum stage and pushchair refusal, so maybe I am looking at it through rose tinted glasses. But I don’t know.

We have had one night away together since he was born. He has stayed with my parents before overnight and love spending time with them, as they regularly have him while we work in addition to nursery days

We can’t decide so throwing it out to a good old poll.

There’s a middle ground option of us meeting half way (45 min drive) and my parents collecting him after one night, so a best of both worlds choice (or maybe I’d feel guiltier, who knows)

If I’d known it was a child free weekend I would have probably chosen a city break. My parents would likely have him instead for this for one night in the future if we asked.

With all the above in mind, WWYD?

Stop feeling guilty ! It’s only a weekend and he loves your parents and they love him, you know he will be safe and looked after and happy. He only lives for the moment and you can do all this with him another time . He is not missing out .

Go Just you and DH. Leave DS with the grandparents - if they offered they’re probably really looking forward to it. I would take advantage of the child-free time, you never know when your next one will be.

when mine were young my mum loved to look after them like this, until she couldn’t any more. But she and the DC still love to talk about their adventures. Take the opportunity - and give the opportunity - while you still can. Have a lovely time.

Oh I would absolutely take the grandparents up on the offer.

It’ll be a much more relaxing weekend not having to be on guard with a 2yo around the hot tub!

If relevant we are taking our toddler away as a huge family (grandparents, aunties, cousins etc) in November to Center Parcs so they will have another trip soon!

Definitely go sans child then!

Definitely take grandparents up on their offer!

Toddler won’t know any different and he’ll have a lovely time being spoiled by grandparents. You can take him to a pumpkin patch another weekend and he can still sleep in his own bed and not be up half the night in a strange place.

I may be biased cos we had practically no help when mine were toddlers (lived abroad) and I’d have killed for a few hours child free, let alone a whole weekend

I would leave your ds with grandparents. We found it really good for our marriage to have the occassional night away when ours were younger (& teenagers 🤣) sounds like he will be fine, its only 2 nights.

I don’t understand the guilt thing — what is it exactly you’re feeling guilty about? Your child not going to a pumpkin patch? Because you think your child should never leave your side? Guilt is a choice. Go away with just your DH if the idea appeals. Don’t if it doesn’t.

You sound like a lovely mum who I imagine does lots of things with your child. Go and have a nice weekend while he is being spoilt by his GP’s

I think you need to focus on what you actually want here. DC will be fine and have a great time either way. Do you really want a chilled weekend with DH, or were you looking forward the the weekend as it was? Either choice is fine so have a think about what you actually want and would enjoy most.
