Young woman took her own life after 'surprise' disciplinary interview at HM Treasury - shocking

Story about a 26-year-old civil servant who, although she had a 3-year "spotless" record, was called into a disciplinary interview without warning, about anonymous complaints of misconduct. She took her own life soon afterwards.

She wasn't allowed to have anyone supporting her, ffs. In other words, she got worse treatment than she would've got had she been interviewed by the police, even without an arrest. You're entitled to free legal advice. Her parents are getting a meeting with the Treasury permanent secretary, after they basically stonewalled during the inquest - presumably on legal advice.

How in God's name is this even possible in this day and age? Who do these managers think they are? And where was the civil service trade union in all of this? Her parents are getting a meeting with the Treasury permanent secretary; they want people to be held to account for what happened. Can you blame them? The Treasury have admitted this wasn't a one-off.

I worked for a long time at an NGO with similar procedures to the civil service; I've seen people crushed by "disciplinary" proceedings that are little more than kangaroo courts. I'm sick of hearing stories - both personally & in the media - about appalling management behaviour. Some people seem to think being a boss in Britain means you get to treat your staff however you want. Sickening.

@Windowcleaning @HoppityBun @Spartan123 @Constantrunner @Gengha @LasagneGoblin I'm having a stiff drink. Quite frankly, we've earned it.

@Didimum I've had enough now. You go and have a think about what exactly it is you think you're defending. I expect it might take quite some time.

And perhaps you should go and have a think about exactly what kind of chip you have on your shoulder and why exactly you find it so intolerable that others comes to different conclusions than you. I expect you won’t, but it will hardly be surprising.

@Didimum I do wish you would stop repeating myths about suicide. I have pointed this out earlier, and yet you are still doing it. It's very unhelpful

I have consistently said throughout this thread that my opinion on it is just that – my opinion. I have also discussed the documented research on the subject with another poster, which also supports that one’s psychological experience cannot be known after death. Hence why I describe it as my opinion. No one here, including me, is reporting myth as fact.

You are reporting suicide myths i.e. that only people with mental health problems kill themselves. That is simply untrue. A little bit of basic reading would inform you that is a myth

Windowcleaning · Today 22:07

Yes, I know some of us have repeated this several times, but it's an important point.

Not everyone who takes their own life has a pre-existing mental health problem. In Chloe's case, neither the coroner's report, her parents or any other source mention a mental health problem.

You can hold whatever opinion about that you like - it doesn't change the facts.
