Have you put your heating on yet?

8 degrees outside on the school run this morning, and 16 in our house. I'm tempted. It's an old draughty house that gets damp easily too.

Early hours yesterday was the first time it came on. We have it set at 19.

Jellycatspyjamas · 14/10/2026 08:33

Yep, it’s been on for a couple of hours this past week. I work too hard to live in a cold house.

No. London…. It’s not that cold yet.

And lots of sunshine this week, so plenty of solar gain in my south facing sitting room.

Winter duvet is on, though.

TallSturdyGirls · 14/10/2026 08:34

I grew up in a boiling house (22 degrees thermostat) but due to skintness and Northern husband had weaned myself to finding anything over 18 degrees warm).
Must have saved £££ over the years. I do use an electric blanket when just me in the house and it gets to about 16 degrees before I need the heating on.

LondonLass2026 · 14/10/2026 08:35

Just had my kitchen windows open at 7am and I'm in in the north east.

Getting a bit sick of people at work who know I live here saying "omg! It must be blowing a gale/freezing up there!" Nope.

BCBird · 14/10/2026 08:35

I put mine on when im.cold. i am fortunate that I can afford to do this. I have invested in a heated blanket which I will use- off work at present. If my hands are cold heating goes on. I am not wearing gloves inside.

msmillicentcat · 14/10/2026 08:36

Yes I set our schedule this week, it's set to come on if below 20 degrees, I find that the most comfortable temp in our house. It's been coming on in the mornings but not as much in the evenings. It's getting a bit colder over the weekend I think. I've also swapped beds to winter duvets. We live up north though.

Have we not already had 3 of these threads in the past week?

If it's cold I put the heating on. If it's not I leave it off.

LongTallSuzie · 14/10/2026 08:36

Yup. I’ve got a chest infection and asthma which is made worse by the chilly and damp weather. I’d rather have less food in the cupboard than be cold in my own home.
Currently sitting at about 20 which feels nice with a cardigan over my pjs.

Heated blanket definitely is the answer when working from home, I love mine!

WhatDoRacoonsSay · 14/10/2026 08:38

Yep, brittle asthmatic so I can't be cold for long.

2chocolateoranges · 14/10/2026 08:38

Central Scotland and ours has been on since beginning go for September. Im not being cold for anyone.

I need the heating to make the house more comfortable and to dry clothes.

stackhead · 14/10/2026 08:39

Ours is set to come on if it drops below 17.5. It hasn't yet.

I've popped the boost on twice so far in the evenings, once for 30 minutes and once for 15 just to take some chill out of the air but both times its because we left the windows open a little bit too long!

Biscuitsforbreakfastt · 14/10/2026 08:42

I feel for anyone who literally cannot afford to heat their home. I really do. But I can and have no interest in having competitive cold endurance for anyone. My heating has been on any time I feel cold. I haven’t worked my whole life to look like the Michelin man while I’m sitting shivering in my own house. Fuck that. It’s toasty and cosy and nobody is taking that away from me!

blankcanvas3 · 14/10/2026 08:42

Yes but only because I have young children. If I didn’t, I would still have it off.

GintyMcGinty · 14/10/2026 08:44

Never it off - Scotland.

BugJuice · 14/10/2026 08:45

My heating is always on, set to 18 degrees in the day and 14 overnight as I never want to be colder than that. I think it clicked on one morning last week.

emuloc · 14/10/2026 08:47

Heating will soon be a luxury for some people, the way things are going. I have put the heating on a couple of times, in the evening, and leave it to do its thing. The advice to heat the person, and not the room, does not work for everyone.

GentleSheep · 14/10/2026 08:47

Yes. I like to keep the house at around 18.0 or 18.5, otherwise I start feeling cold. The thermostat is set to that level, then at 17.5 overnight.

Biscuitsforbreakfastt · 14/10/2026 08:50

GintyMcGinty · 14/10/2026 08:44

Same. Heating can be an all year round game here!

EverardDeTroyes · 14/10/2026 08:50

Ours was put on the end of last week. Given I am married to someone from the near tropics, I think we did well to hold out that long. It is on a thermostat and only comes on when the temperature drops below 19. So far, the radiators have only got mildly warm but it is enough to make the difference.

ElixirMaker · 14/10/2026 08:51

Yes because it is set for all year round if the temperatures drop below particular levels set by us for comfort. It dropped to 6 degrees outside the other night and yes the heating came on. We have different temperature settings for night and day.

I refuse to be cold, it makes my disability worse and we can afford to heat our house. I also open windows to vent the house so again that drop in temperature can trigger the heating.

Several years ago we went round the whole house with a thermal camera to work out where we were losing heat that we could fix. The house feels far more warm after doing all that so the heating the house costs less than it did.

RampantIvy · 14/10/2026 08:52

LittleMonks11 · 14/10/2026 08:08

It puts itself on

So did ours.
Our heating is thermostatically controlled and comes on when the temperature in the living room drops below 20 degrees during the day. It is set to frost free at night and never comes on at night.

DH has very poor circulation and feels the cold dreadfully, so the heating comes on when the temperature demands it not the calendar.

We have had several single figure night temperatures now.

Apart from costs I have no idea why some people get morally superior about heating their homes. Caveat: our solar panels offset our carbon footprint significantly.

MargoLivebetter · 14/10/2026 09:00

Mine is set to come on if the house falls below a certain temperature, so it has come on a few times in the last month. I've never understood the adherence of some people to certain dates, when to my mind it is the temperature, not the date that is significant!

Forton26 · 14/10/2026 09:04

I had it on once the house was feeling damp cold at about 16 degrees inside on chilly day we had. An hour to warm it back through. It didn’t take long. We don’t heat constantly and not to higher temps than 20. Never overnight. I don’t like the dry stuffy air it can create. But i won’t go cold either.

But other than that it’s been pretty warm and well with the price rises i wanna save as much credit for the really cold winter months and not have to limit it.
