Have you put your heating on yet?

8 degrees outside on the school run this morning, and 16 in our house. I'm tempted. It's an old draughty house that gets damp easily too.

It puts itself on

Johnogroats · 14/10/2026 08:09

No. London…. It’s not that cold yet.

ratatouillemousesqueak · 14/10/2026 08:09

No not yet. Bit chilly but not enough yet. I think if you get damp then that’s different but maybe a dehumidifier may help?

Mydogisagentleman · 14/10/2026 08:10

Yes, it took me a while and some online support from DH.
He's in Spain and I had a hive system put in.
I was initially baffled by it

ApolloandDaphne · 14/10/2026 08:11

Absolutely. Our house was 16 this morning too and that is far too cold for me. It's on for a few hours to allow me to get ready but then I'm going out so it will be switched off.

Bogstandardname · 14/10/2026 08:11

No. Heated blanket to sit under at night and more layers in the day. I have been tempted but I just think of my finances and temptation soon goes away. Wait until it gets really cold.

AccidentallyOnTrend · 14/10/2026 08:11

Not at home, no.

I stayed in a very expensive rental apartment in London last night. I put the heating on and I have to admit, it was absolute bliss waking up this morning.

This 😆

But 16 degrees??? I’d be freezing.

Echobelly · 14/10/2026 08:13

I'm holding off because I'm going away for a week on Saturday, which will just leave DH and DS in the house, who probably won't notice it being colder. I'm always the one who turns it on, so I doubt they will in my absence.

I did notice the chill, but didn't register with any of the DC. We've been here 9 years now and think we've all hardened up a bit. Find visiting friends in new builds unbearable as it's so warm 😂

Yes because it's chilly and heat and air on repeat is important for the house as well as health

theworldisadarkplace · 14/10/2026 08:19

Nope. In the South West so it's still not too bad yet. Pity. I love central heating!

To answer the question in the title, no I haven’t. My house is brand-new highly insulated, highly efficient and super warm. But if I was you, I definitely would.

LittleMonks11 · 14/10/2026 08:20

16 degrees - our heating system wouldn’t have the audacity to let our house get to that stage 🥶

Ineedanewsofa · 14/10/2026 08:22

Ours is never “off” but set to a schedule, it came on overnight because the house dropped below 12 degrees(!) It came back on at 6am to bring the house up to 18, it’ll go at 10am unless house drops below 15, back up to 18 at 6pm until 10pm.
Also an old draughty, potentially damp house so we find this stops any damp problems.

elephantskiss · 14/10/2026 08:23

Yes, I put it on last week the day it was 2 degrees here when I was getting ready in the morning and it was 15 inside. I'm still trying to keep it low though (mostly 17-18 during the day even though it's a lot colder than I'd like) because I'm worried about the bills.

Davros · 14/10/2026 08:24

I’ve done a couple of hours Boost now and then. I’m going to get the heated blanket out

PersonaNonFatta · 14/10/2026 08:24

No and I’m delighted! Its not even cold yet, but DH is shuffling around in an oodie.
He usually puts the CH on in September and I’m sweltering all winter.
However he’s come over all economical and stingy this year because of the ridiculous price of heating oil.
I’ll be able to wear jumpers this year!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 14/10/2026 08:25

It's clicked on a few times. I haven't felt cold yet, but that's probably because the heating is doing its things properly.

MiddleAgedDread · 14/10/2026 08:26

Yes, it’s been on most days for at least an hour but I haven’t put it on scheduled timer yet, it’s been bloody freezing and the washing hasn’t been drying. It was 15.3 before I got up this morning, last week it was 14.2 one morning! If I was going out to work I wouldn’t put it on but it’s too cold to WFH.

Vegetablespringrolls · 14/10/2026 08:27

Not yet. In south west so quite mild. I'm not wearing a jumper yet, still putting ice in my drinks and only recently stopped having the fan on in our bedroom so it will be a while I think.

Iliketulips · 14/10/2026 08:28

Ours it set to 18c on timed, and hasn't come on my itself yet. However, DH has a cold and as it was a bit colder inside the other day U bumped the heating up a little to come on last 30mins.

Housemove101 · 14/10/2026 08:29

Not yet! It’s still not cold here. Ours is set to come on when it dips below 20 degrees but so far the house is staying at 21 🤞🏻

bananamachinewater · 14/10/2026 08:31

Omg mine is basically on year round! Thermostat stays set at 20 or 21 all year and it comes on as needed. In Scotland so only time it never comes on is during heatwaves.

devildeepbluesea · 14/10/2026 08:32

No. It literally never goes on in the morning, I hate getting up and the house feeling stuffy. Evenings are starting to feel a little chillier, but if I’m using the oven, that takes the edge off plenty. It is a very warm mid terrace house (1960s).

I’m going to hold out til November now.
