Do you always take things so literally?

I think you can tell from.the second part of my post that no, I don't

😀
I would find this very attractive in a man. I am being completely serious.
What does he re-enact?

Oh dear. I’m sorry to hear this! Is he also a vegan?!

I read that as "is he also a virgin?". 😂🤣😂

I know he’s not one-pretty sure he’s not the other!

I so wanted this re-enactment to be jousting.

I have not the slightest interest in that hobby, but my good friend is very into it and all her mates that do it are LOVELY and super interesting people. So, congratulations?

Just as an aside, I have done 1940s reenacting and yes, a lot of us do rationing as well. It's a cheap healthy way to live.

Arran2024 · 11/10/2026 22:13

My nephew used to do it. He wanted to be a Viking but was stuck with Scottish lowlander. I think you had to stick around for a long time before you get to be a Viking!

What do you do about fruit and veg? You wouldn't have been able to get out-of-season in the 1940s. And do you stick to fuel (including petrol) and clothing rationing?

I imagine it does make you aware of the wastefulness of present day life.

I'm afraid we don't do petrol.or fuel rationing. I like my modern comforts.

The effort we put in varies, sometimes we eat seasonal veg and have 2 ounces of cheese a week each but that is a bit miserable to be honest. We never stick to 2 ounces of tea either.

Other times we are just very aware of how much meat we eat. Try to keep cheese minimal but go mad with the lovely variety available. I don't know how they did it in wartime because there is so much meal prepping to do, it can take hours dealing with mountains of carrots, potatoes parsnips and swede. It does bring home just how wasteful we are these days and I really try to keep to the spirit of it. Interestingly we always have loads of fat (though not butter) and sugar. I think we just are used to eating differently these days.

A friend’s DH is, goes to fencing/sword fight lessons to keep fit, is a total history geek and one of the loveliest and gentlest men you could meet. Such a devoted dad, too.

I think you should take pride in the young man you have created. He could be out necking 8 pints a night in a bar and pissing in people’s doorways.

There are several Facebook groups that use wartime rationing. It’s v interesting especially the differences between the US and the UK.

Ooh, how cool. How authentic are his outfits? Do you have pictures?

What an interesting thread.

Anyone who does this too- what is it that you actually do? Is it mainly at weekends, or only on certain weekends? Is every ‘event’ a different time in history? Do you make your own outfits? Do you have a pretend fight? If so, is it an actual fight that you copy or just a generic ‘we’re this side, you’re that side, after about an hour we let you win, then you have to run around the field and cheer while we all lay down’? How seriously is everything taken? Is it basically an excuse to meet up and spend time with other people who like history? Or is not everyone actually interested in history and are some of them interested in historical costumes or historical ways of cooking and eating etc?
