Do you take a wedge or something to a hotel for extra security?

we are going to spend a week in different hotels on our holiday, and I don’t know if I am being over anxious. Does anyone take any extra security measures to prevent people accessing their room overnight?

Ok, I might be missing something here, but in a connecting door scenario, where the occupants of each room are separate and unknown to each other, are these doors back to back? i.e. each party can open their door inwards and the connecting door outwards.

Anyhow if travelling alone as a female I would never take a connecting room, and they are often sold as two separate rooms.

Otherwise I'd never even think of extra security, just lock and bolt as usual.

My teenage daughter and I were given key cards for a room in a Hilton hotel and walked in, only to see someone's belongings everywhere. We beat a hasty retreat. As I say, a Hilton.

The barrister who wrote the report commissioned by Travelodge after the Maidenhead incident found that "room incursions" are a problem throughout the hospitality sector.

So when it's just me or me and my daughter, a chair gets wedged against the door.

Literally never. It’s only on Mumsnet where I’ve ever seen anyone claiming that they do. I’ve never met anyone in real life who does this.

Same - I have never heard of this and I’m in my 60’s!

I have been using a wedge since the incident at the Travel lodge. I stay in hotels alone and feel safer now with the wedge.
I have a friend who told me she was staying in a hotel, booked in, given room key, goes to the room, its someone else's room, this happened twice in the same occasion.

I’m sorry so many people here live in a state of perpetual fear.

Some people on this thread seem to have a very strong reaction to what isn’t a very dramatic thing to do🙄

I’ve been in plenty of hotels that have chains and dead locks but I’ve also stayed in hotels that don’t. I’ve also been given a key to the wrong room twice. I don’t know if it’s now more prevalent because the room doesn’t have a physical key.

So if I stay alone in the latter type of hotel I sleep better with something on the door - just like I sleep better at home knowing the doors are locked. I don’t think that’s so odd.

DH used to work for a hotel chain that had ‘wrong key’ as one of their metrics!

Where do you get these from please? I travel for business sometimes and use the soare chair. Never bother when abroad with husband though

Bowies · 11/10/2026 22:36

No - it’s a safety issue, far more likely to be a fire in the hotel, or a medical emergency

Macaroni46 · 11/10/2026 22:40

Never occurred to me. Just put the bolt / chain across. Have travelled loads by myself to lots of different countries.

I haven’t used a wedge but I do put things in front of the door and that is because I have had someone come into my room at night in a European hotel. Luckily I woke and scared them off. There was a group of us staying down a particular corridor and that night the intruder had stolen things from most of the rooms. I wasn’t alone in the room and felt more secure as there was a large group of us but still it has changed how I feel in hotels and that is the same even if I’m with my husband.

As I mentioned on another thread, I'm ex cabin crew and a colleague of mine was raped in her room by an employee of the hotel who let himself in.

So I travel with a wedge and a portable door lock.

If that's living in a state of 'perpetual fear' then so what?

Zerosleep · 12/10/2026 07:16

No but we have a rather large pram that I wedge behind the door, it would make a noise if the door opened. I will be taking a wedge once the pram is no longer in use.

roadtogothere · 12/10/2026 08:21

Can anyone share where to get these and what types you use?

Additup · 12/10/2026 08:45

It has never crossed my mind to do this and I've travelled all over the world. If I found myself on my own somewhere dodgy I might but tbh I wouldn't travel somewhere that's dodgy on my own.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/10/2026 08:48

Oh lord I know I’m always on these threads as the voice of fire safety but please consider a different option than a wedge. In a fire, trust me you’ll struggle to get out. In an emergency, the right people will struggle to get in.

Bestbeforenow · 12/10/2026 08:49

I don’t travel a lot but have been given the wrong keycard twice, and walked in on other people. I’ve also had to evacuate for a fire once. Friends have had their stuff stolen while they slept.

I wedge adjoining doors, but not the main door for fire safety. I balance my (metal) keys on the door handle as a make shift alarm.

How often in real life do you go around asking people if they use a wedge whilst away in a hotel?...
