Do you take a wedge or something to a hotel for extra security?

we are going to spend a week in different hotels on our holiday, and I don’t know if I am being over anxious. Does anyone take any extra security measures to prevent people accessing their room overnight?

Honestly this has just never occurred to me as something to worry about.

Literally never. It’s only on Mumsnet where I’ve ever seen anyone claiming that they do. I’ve never met anyone in real life who does this.

So many things I don’t do that I’ve only seen on MN. Beginning to think I’m a reckless, trusting, germ ridden lunatic who has managed to survive for 55 years through sheer luck

Never
Last year my aunt was in a hotel room. And she had the chair against the door - apparently her and my uncle had always done this (he had died 10 years previous)
She had a heart attack, phoned my Dad in another country and they had to beak the door down

By the way, the only reason someone accessing your room at night perceived to be a problem now is that the internet and social media specifically means that any incident is known about, and like Chinese whispers gets changed often. Fires, even more so medical emergencies happen too and a wedge could mean you can’t get out / get help.

you sound incredibly sheltered

Of course the thread is full of women scoffing at the idea that a man trying to break into your hotel room is some far fetched flight of fancy. It's happened to me twice.

I have some door wedges at home because we have some doors that rattle in drafts. I’m a 66 year old, not particularly strong woman, and I can push a door with a wedge open with very little effort. They’re not going to protect you.

Yes, a wedge. I used to travel a lot for work and was advised to do this by our security adviser.

I assume you are referring to the fire risk?
Around 400 fires in UK hotels reported annually. Compare that to 4000 sexual offences in UK hotels reported annually. I wouldn’t say it’s “far more dangerous” at all.

How many heart attacks or other critical illnesses where entry to room would be needed?
