Share inheritance?

If you were not married and financially secure and inherited the best part of a million quid, would you give anyone else any of it? Abd us so, to whom? No siblings nor cousins involved

And your reasons?

I did inherit from an uncle.
i shared equally with my siblings after I had put aside money for Mum’s needs (not his sister but his request ).
This meant Mum was able to stay in her own home until she died, which was what she wanted.
From my share my children received some to help with education or housing. Both chose to put towards housing deposit.

ItsABatFaceThing · 09/10/2026 23:41

I inherited 750k in 2019 when my parents died within 8 weeks of each other. I’m married and happily so - the money was always viewed as ‘ours’ - and my parents loved my husband so they were leaving it to ‘us’ really.

we bought bigger house and have some in savings which he manages as well - I’d spend it all! But for just a boyfriend or partner? Not married? I would never share

user1492757084 · 10/10/2026 06:06

I would buy a house in Ireland and a house in Italy and spread my time between the two. I would leave my assets to a trusted charity and as little as possible to governments as taxes.
My reason would be sheer joy for myself and respect for the charities I support.

muddyford · 10/10/2026 06:31

I would buy a house in my favourite place and another in Umbria. I would leave my estate between four charities (none well-known).

Trappedinthecastofawhodunnit · 10/10/2026 08:21

The thing that sticks with me - how much would I need to have to feel financially secure - as a single person, you have no one else to rely on (unless you have kids and even then I wouldn't ask them).
I think I might need it all to pay for care when I got older (women live to nearly 100 in my family) - I'd need a personal assistant and private carers - eventually paying for a nice care home.
Can you tell I've just had a elderly relative recently pass away and they required a great deal of help from both their relatives and private carers. Getting old and not having access to the care I want terrifies me.

I like the mix of dreaming of beautiful places and practicalities

And the being the only person to rely on impacts that

I would worry about being expected to pay for everything. Not through meanness, but because I think it could make relationships awkward?

I’m buying the kids a house with my inheritance. I have also given a lot of the jewellery away to people who were kind to my Mum.

MyManinCaracas · 10/10/2026 09:45

I would give a generous donation to the rescue charity where I adopted my cat. They do a lot of great work for cats and their welfare.

Some people really like the feeling of paying for everything - I don't! I like my adult kids to buy me an odd coffee, a small token of appreciation goes a long way - but I know my opinion is not common in MN.

sherbetlemonade · 10/10/2026 11:10

Well I wouldn't go around telling people, for a start!

If I were single, then I'd keep enough of the money to ensure I was financially secure for the rest of my days, and then look around for local small charities and good causes to support.

I totally agree. It is nice for adult DC to return the favour sometimes, making the relationship feel more equal.

I would be (more) generous with friends, but probably no gifts.

A holiday home in the Caribbean for me please. I love France but want winter warmth. Friends and family can borrow it, free of charge. We might be there though, so they would need to share the space with us!

AnonyMumAuDHD · 10/10/2026 11:13

If had no family’s ties (including children/partner) then no I wouldn’t share - it’s not actually that much if you are a single person with mo prospect of future inheritances - that amount would clear a mortgage and set up a comfortable pension.

If I came into much more, say £10m, then there are quite a few people I would share it with. Firstly, I’d give my cleaner a lump sum so that she could enter buying a house with her fiancé as an equal - she grew up in foster care, cannot have children of her own due to endometriosis, has a fucked up family and yet is the most generous and engaged step mum in very difficult circumstances. I’d love for her to finally have something good happen to her and a bit of security. Damn it, now I realise I’d probably give her some of the nearly £1m.

whatanode · 10/10/2026 11:14

Definitely. I’d buy a flat for my dad (relatively cheapish round here) and make sure my sibling and his kids were well looked after. Once I’d bought a new car and had a fabulous few holidays, I’d look for opportunities to randomly help other people.

Gengha · 10/10/2026 11:17

I’d retire, I’m of an age where it would be doable for me on a million.

009395elj · 10/10/2026 11:19

I would get my children on property ladder with decent deposits ,give my friend enough money to adapt her house for their disability and donate a large amount to MND research.

Lovemelovemycat · 10/10/2026 11:22

I’d buy the three bed flat I’ve seen for sale near me and give ds2 deposit money for a place. Ds1 already has his own home.

I agree about it being nice for adult dc to pay for bits and bobs, my dd paid for a few things and a surprise ice cream on our recent weekend away 😊

Winter sun would be lovely

Agreed, I don’t like it either

GordanoServices · 10/10/2026 11:46

I would keep it an invest it to help my kids in the future as I’m concerned for their own financial security.

dinofloor · 10/10/2026 11:58

I’d set aside, say, £25k for my 2 cousins (like siblings to me) and 2 brothers to set them up with a deposit. But I’d only give it to them when I know they’re actually looking for a house and aren’t going to piss it up a wall!

I’d pay off my own mortgage, perhaps move somewhere bigger but maybe not!

I’d love to just be able to treat people. My grandma took me away a lot as a child as my parents didn’t want to, so I’d love to take her on a fancy holiday that’s my treat! Also just paying for some nice meals out, spoiling people at Christmas!

The biggest one would be that I could finally afford the wedding of my dreams for me and my fiancé! We’d love to get married at a unique place that means a lot to us, at £20k for a day it’s unachievable on current wages but with a million quid I’d be reserving my date in a flash!

TwoTigers · 10/10/2026 13:18

The only estate I'm likely to inherit is from my Mum. I've already decided I will benefit DD in some way. We wouldn't need anywhere near that amount now, so I'd definitely see if a Deed of Variation could be done.
