If you were not married and financially secure and inherited the best part of a million quid, would you give anyone else any of it? Abd us so, to whom? No siblings nor cousins involved

And your reasons?

boredsmored · 09/10/2026 22:10

I would help a close friend

nearlylovemyusername · 09/10/2026 22:12

Would you? to whom? how much?

It's a loaded question, so share the context

It’s just a hypothetical question, genuinely, I have no skin in the game

I would never give any to a boyfriend

TheFirstAffair · 09/10/2026 22:15

I'd give some to my parents, a bit to a couple of other people but other than that I'd be up and gone like a fart in the wind

Where would you go?

my dream is to live in France, in the sun

I’d give some to my friends and probably set aside funds for their kids uni fees or first houses (which I would keep quiet until the time).

I’d give to local charities and community projects like church roof repairs or a new school playground or donations to the hospice and care homes,

But I’d also try really hard to live an amazing life spending it on myself - travel mainly.

TheFirstAffair · 09/10/2026 22:21

North Yorkshire, not too far and not too expensive. I'd want the money to last

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2026 22:23

My dream is to go somewhere nice, build a sustainable house, leave it to someone in that community. Start a trend of second home non-wankers.

TwoYearsToo · 09/10/2026 22:23

Children? Not married doesn't mean no adult children - it really depends whether you are taking to unmarried child free 20 somethings or divorced/ widowed 50/60 somethings (or any other demographic).50+ and mortgage free with adult children - consider splitting it equally with the children depending on their ages, or putting some away for them if young adults...

A million gets you a fairly modest three bedroom detached house with a small garden and a single garage where I live, or a two bedroom flat in the nearest city, so playing lady muck also depends where the people involved live, whether they have children to support and whether your reference to being financially stable means owning a home suitable for their dependents outright...

Aaloyisha · 09/10/2026 22:23

I’d earmark some for my kids.

I’d give some to my siblings (and in laws… if in this hypothetical situation I was married). But only if they needed it, not ‘just because’.

its just fun isn’t it, like picking a dream house on rightmove.

I wouldn’t give cash randomly to anyone, but I suspect I would pay for lots of things for people. What I would do though is wait until my nieces and nephews have full time jobs and then let them know I have a house deposit for them when they’re ready.

Actually, I would also do the same for my friend’s two kids, she has no hope of being able to do it after her abusive ex screwed up her life.

WokeUpEarlyWalkedTheDog · 09/10/2026 22:29

Depends whether I rented or owned a property.Renting? No. I would buy a modest house at around £300-500k depending on the area and put the rest to one side for a pension.

ETA - just realised you mentioned ‘financially secure’ in your OP. I’d give bits and pieces here and there as needed.

I don't think I would give people (other than my kids obviously) money directly but I would generous in other ways.

thesungodra · 09/10/2026 22:32

I would only ever give money to my brother or my kids.

Specialagentblond · 09/10/2026 22:33

I’d share it as required. No grand gestures but a little here and there to make a real difference to those who I love. Particularly things like private health if they’re struggling with their health, hired help. Also things that bring absolute joy.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 09/10/2026 22:34

I live in the south east of England so my first thought was- £1m isn’t a lot of money to share, I’d just buy a 4 bed detached house in an “ok but not posh” area and I’d still have to use savings to cover stamp duty.

Exclusivegames · 09/10/2026 22:35

That’s true @FancyBiscuitsLevel

Assume you already own a home, mortgage free?

OP posts:
Exclusivegames · 09/10/2026 22:38

I would like to build an eco house @MrsTerryPratchett , that’s quite a dream of mine

But then I swither between that and a city pad, so I can go to te opera, and gigs, and out to eat!

ReadingSoManyThreads · 09/10/2026 22:39

No, as a million in this day and age isn't really that much. So I'd keep it and know that I'll have enough to cover retirement without any worries.

If I were to inherit multiple millions, then I'd give some (not sure how much, perhaps up to 10%) to my childhood best friend. No one else. Although, my children would benefit, I'd buy them houses when they were older.

HouseFullOfDogs · 09/10/2026 22:46

Even if it was a lot more than a million, I wouldn’t. I’ve lent and given money to people before and it’s never ended well. We made a decision about 10 years ago to never do it again, other than to give money to our children. No one else in any circumstances.

MermaidMummy06 · 09/10/2026 23:13

I'd keep it, and keep it quiet. Retire. Move. Just not battle anymore. Travel. Spend my days doing simple things I don't have time or money for. I'd put some in trust for DC for study/house (DH would remarry quickly if I'm gone, & not consider DC in inheritance).

Quickest way to lose it is by telling people you have it & giving chunks away.

WillieBanjo · 09/10/2026 23:27

South no North maybe

I am north I’d sort my sister out
