Everyone knows that boy/girl twins can’t identical right? Wrong!

Here is my Friday night rant as a mum of twins teenagers who still gets asked if they are identical when the girl/boy twins are standing right in front of them, looking not one bit alike let alone identical. Plus they’re different sexes!

typical conversation-
“oh you have twins, what are they?”
”a boy and a girl”
“lovely, are they identical?”
”no they’re a boy and a girl”
”yeah but are they identical?”

Our neighbors had triplets , two girls and a boy . Their mother told me that the girls were identical twins. No idea where the brother came in.

Simple - two eggs, one splits giving the identical girls and the other is the boy. All three in the womb together, which makes them triplets, but the girls coming from the same egg that split are identical.

If one is a boy and one is a girl they should be able to work out they're not identical without too much thought surely?

Obviously, but as many people have now added to this thread, people tend to think about facial similarities, and use the word 'identical' in that sense.

People just say stuff without thinking too hard about it, because they're just being pleasant and passing the time of day. They probably don't care too much about how similar a set of random twins are: its just one strain of the usual chit chat that most of us dole out and listen to in equal measure.

My b/g twins are 20 and get asked this all the time too. They don’t even look remotely related, let alone identical. He’s tall and dark like his dad. She’s short and blonde like me. Tbh, she gets asked if she is her older sister’s twin more than his.
My standard answer was always “One has an innie and one has an outie. Therefore not identical. Not at all possible.”

Some people don’t realise they can’t be identical if opposite sex. That’s ok.

No, it's not OK. It's illogical and ridiculous.Confused
