Advice needed. Six year old barely slept last night… should she go to school?

It’s my child’s birthday today and as can be expect she was very excited. So by the time she fell asleep was 9pm. We co sleep and I remember her waking at around midnight for about half an hour and then she woke again from 2.4-4.30. I managed to get her back to sleep again. But she needs to get at 6.45 to get to breakfast club! I feel mean sending her in to school if she’ll be knackered. But also think I’m being a bit meladramatic. I’ve only had a few hours sleep myself so maybe overly anxious. Any help or words of support to let me know she’ll be ok.

@TotaleclipseinFrancenot sure what part of ‘ i wasn’t asking opinions on my cosleeping arrangement’ you don’t get! If you reply to my post expect a response!

@AppleDumplingWithCustardof course it doesn’t. Many of these people have said to send her to school and I haven’t claimed them to be trolls. Sending a rude, abrupt post to me on a totally unrelated topic, which I wasn’t asking for opinions about (someone asked me a question on here about my cosleeping arrangement) is deliberately antagonistic and troll like behaviour! They wanted a reaction!

@SleeplessInWherevergood for you! I’m sure you do lots of things for your autistic child that I would disagree with! Do whatever suits you. For me cosleeping works!

Well this is mumsnet and you are asking for opinions so you get them.
I don't think that it is the norm for a six-year-old to be co-sleeping at this age.

In my opinion you are not putting your child first by doing this.
You seem bitter about your ex, maybe you've reason to be, however, I believe that this should be put aside in order for your child to gain some independence in sleeping alone.

Your ex is absolutely right to want this to happen whatever his reasons may be.

In my opinion you seem obsessed with children not cosleeping and making sure my ex is happy!! 😂

Really? A literally just turned 6 year old today, co-sleeps with her mother. You say you're a frequent MN user, yet you've never come across this until today?

Brace yourself - mine still co-sleeps at 7 😱 we're all about secure attachments in this house. And he happily goes off for weekend camps and school residentials with zero issue.

Just because its not what you do, doesnt mean its wrong 🤷‍♀️

@pinkleavesandtea I hope your daughter has a wonderful evening bowling!

And not just this - it’s entirely normal to co-sleep up until this age and beyond in the majority rest of the world. So much so that they just call it… sleeping.

pinkleavesandtea · 10/10/2026 08:06

Just wanted to say thanks for all your helpful opinions. Daughter had a blast at school and then enjoyed the bowling and past out at 9.30pm and is still asleep now! Turns out kids on little sleep are much more resilient than I thought!

The co sleeping is just part of it.

I don't know why any grown adult would need to ask about whether or not to send their child to school or not over this, I really don't.

The hyper level of excitement over a 6-year-old child's birthday by its parent. Yes you do things for your children of course, but the excitement over it. I don't get it.

The apparent stubbornness to teach the child to sleep by herself seems in part motivated as some kind of revenge on the child's father.
Who rightly wants the child to sleep alone now.
Just because you're apparently bitter about him doesn't make that less true

In my opinion that's wrong. Wholly wrong.

What also surprises me is that you seem to expect everybody to agree that it is right not to train your child to sleep alone in order to get one over on an ex.

No. Most people realise that the child's independence is more important than anything.

Put together it all reeks of enmeshment.

There's nothing obsessive about it at all.
In my opinion, at the age of 6 (not 6 months, that's different) this child needs to sleep alone now.

Take it or leave it.

They co-sleeping usually because there's no other option.
Fair enough.

I doubt that anybody's opting for this.

Anyway, assuming this is the UK, it's not culturally the norm to do this so who cares.

No other option? What does that mean? What are you saying about the majority rest of the world?

DS 'didn't sleep' for the first six years of his life.

He still went to school.

Lack of sleep due to excitement is not a reason to pull a sickie.

pinkleavesandtea · 10/10/2026 08:46

@Hanalamthis person is a troll and delulu! Or has abandonment issues and can’t fathom why people care about their kids!
