Somebody has just walked into our hotel room at 4am

Me and DP were fast asleep in a (large, chain) hotel and a woman with a suitcase has just let herself in with a key - don’t know who was more shocked her or us! We didn’t have any clothes on but were under the sheets thank god. I was sleeping so deeply it took me a second to realise what was going on. Never had this happen before in my life, and after everything that happened with Premier Inn I thought hotels would be even more diligent about security.

Phoned reception and she was more concerned with getting our details than actually apologising. It wasn’t a mistake with the key, the woman was told that this was her room. I’ve never worked in a hotel, but how could this happen? We checked in in person last night and signed for the room. Already paid when booking unfortunately. Surely the system should have known this room was occupied?

We’ve bolted the door now and it obviously won’t happen again tonight, but I doubt I’ll be able to go back to sleep now...

You can be scared at the time but obsessing over for days afterwards is silly. It sounds like an honest mistake. Honestly if you travel a lot this is considered pretty minor.

The OP didn't say anything about days afterwards.

Read the OP post. It's SO important to practise your reading skills.

Why is it Scary?
A woman with a suitcase wouldnt be a threat.

You really don't need to be 'super cool' all the time. Get yourself some boundaries.

Have you ever stayed in any hotel?

Right! Talk about spinning it around to blame op!!!

SnowflakesandSlippers · 09/10/2026 06:16

Side note, but how can so many people sleep naked in a hotel room. I would worry too much about the fire alarm going off! I always take my best pyjamas just in case!

Was thinking the same

I give empathy when it warranted. This was not a big deal, far worse happens to women. OP is overreacting

How is a post on MN complaining about dangerous service an overreaction? Youre the one sounding like a drama queen here, determined to pretend OP is having a breakdown over it for some bizarre reason.

Have you? All doors have a fold
over bolt to secure it against just this occurrence.

No they don’t?!

Ved · 09/10/2026 08:27

Yep. Utterly baffled at the 'why is it scary' comment. I mean, really......?! Hmm

It’s called gaslighting and is how some people get their kicks.

They were lucky this time. It could have been a lot worse. Why on earth are hotels not double checking?! 😞

I just don't think this was a life threatening situation. I'm sure it was scary at the time and I feel sorry for her but I still don't think it is a big deal.
She posted to ask our opinions and I gave mine (as someone who travels a lot). You can choose to disagree and that's fine.

Where did she say was life threatening? Again, you're being a drama queen.

Omg that's scary

Bit of an overreaction. Why is it scary? A woman walks in with a suitcase. Unless she has a machine gun in it, it’s just a mistake by the hotel as happens more often than you would think.

People have been using the words life threatening and dangerous situation in this thread. Maybe not OP but others are blowing it out of proportion.

I mean you described it yourself as a 'dangerous situation's maybe you're the drama queen

Good grief. 😞 I'm done on this thread for now honestly. Hope you're OK @Batmam Please tell us what the hotel was. Thank you. Flowers

No, you have accused OP of "breaking down" and been the one to use the term "life threatening". Just dial it back, there's no need for such overly dramatic, emotive language, its just an MN post complaining about bad/dangerous service, you are the one blowing it out of proportion.

Maisymouse2 · 09/10/2026 05:43

A woman with a suitcase wouldnt be a threat.

Because what it means is ANYONE can get into your room.

It should not be allowed to happen and I would be asking for a refund. That is poor form on the hotels part.

Um, 🤔 ah, maybe because next time it won't be a woman with or without a suitcase? It might actually be a 6ft. 4" heavily built man, who growls rather than speaks - would that be scary enough for you @Maisymouse2? Although with your chosen name I'm surprised you didn't understand in the first place ... 🫖🍫 ⬅️ to show I am not really trying to be mean!

I'm not the one using dramatic and emotive language. Others in this thread are describing the situation as dangerous, threatening etc. if anything I've tried to tone it down by saying it is not dangerous or that it is not a big deal. Was fun chatting with you.

It happened at 4am this morning. OP posted at 5:18 when she was obviously still feeling a bit discombobulated. I think you need to work on your comprehension skills because she hasn't been 'obsessing over for days afterwards'.

Definitely not the OP and definitely you minimising the feelings of the OP and others in the situation while ignoring or misreporting what they write. Here you are -

life-threatening

Obsessing for days

Breaking down over everything minor

Making a mountain out of molehill.

You're the one blowing things out of proportion.

Name the chain and get a full refund. The only thing they care about is bad publicity.

Those aren't emotive words except life-threatening (I only used it as I was responding to someone who used that word). Everything else I said was minimising the event/putting it into perspective not blowing it out of proportion as some others seem to be doing by calling it scary, dangerous, life threatening etc.

I will agree my criticisms are probably more towards those who are overreacting on this thread ( I haven't seen OP post again)
