I may 'Unalive' someone soon

So many times over the last couple of weeks I've read about murders where they say that the victim was 'Unalived' rather than killed/murdered.

Why? Its driving me daft.

OP posts:

Its normally just on facebook, because they automatically ban users for using buzz words like kill, Dean, murder etc in comments. I got banned for a few days for saying 'if my husband doesnt stop annoying me, ill murder him' Its automatically picked up by the bots so the context isn't looked at.

It’s related to social media algorithms. Some sites restrict how much a person’s content is seen if they use words like ‘suicide’, ‘dead’ or ‘killed’.

That was meant to say Dead, not Dean. Poor Dean! 🤣

GameOfJones · 08/10/2026 20:04

As PP said, it's to get past the bots on social media that are looking for words like "kill" or "murder" or "suicide".

GameOfJones · 08/10/2026 20:05

.... Or "Dean" 🤣

XenoBitch · 08/10/2026 20:06

It is so the post does not get flagged, and the post pulled or the poster banned.
It is crazy really. I am in some MH groups on FB, and you can't talk about suicide because of this... in groups where people are struggling with thoughts of suicide.

Spidey66 · 08/10/2026 20:07

Oh for goodness sake, ‘triggering’ has gone bonkers. (I wonder if that would be filtered on SM?)

Totally agree, what is this nonsense

ThatLoudCat · 08/10/2026 20:09

Just to get their posts around filters. "Graped" is another one.

likelysuspect · 08/10/2026 20:16

Ok, so if its to get round filters then presumably 'unalived' or graped (raped?) will then also set off the filter?

MissingMeadow · 08/10/2026 20:17

Yes it's ridiculous as is graped.

Moving forwards I shall be using Dean as a synonym for kill. Thanks for this.

Blankitout · 08/10/2026 20:34

I'd never even heard of this expression until it was mentioned in an MN thread a wee while ago. Never heard anyone use it or seen it used.
Absolutely ridiculous.

Vanessaandjamie1 · 08/10/2026 20:36

For a second there after reading your title I got scared

Presumably people wouldn't use them, if it didn't work.

I wondered what he did!

Hotandpointy · 08/10/2026 20:51

I hate this. It’s absolutely farcical when you look at the cesspool of degradation that exists on the internet and then factual words are banned, regardless on context. Confused

Tik tok nonsense

seahorsessky · 08/10/2026 20:57

I find the terms self-delete or unalived herself more offensive than committed suicide. Some very close tried to kill herself many times and up until recently, the term committed or attempted suicide was used, yet people shriek about this now, saying it means a crime, though obviously it hasn't been for many years, and a lot of us find it less insulting than other terms. Committed can be used to describe feelings about a relationship/job etc, and while the term committed murder relates to a crime, it's the noun, not the verb, that's the crime.

And unalived herself/someone else is so much worse. I agree-I hate it.

He deserves to be unalived

Nottodaybob · 08/10/2026 21:21

I find it absolutely ridiculous that social media sensors (deleted, bans etc,) posts and accounts that use dead, kill, murder, rape, porn, suicide etc but keep gun related stuff and other awful red pill type content. It's mad.

I do think ‘died by suicide’ is a more compassionate phrase, as it removes the blame from the victim.

Echobelly · 08/10/2026 21:33

Yes, it is an algorithm thing, although apparently it shouldn't be an issue for established influencers/tiktokers if the algorithm knows their material and that they're not likely to be encouraging violence or producing otherwise unsuitable material.

You're welcome, happy to help avoid the bots! But there should definitely be an edit option here. 🤣
