Is this a normal interaction

I am genuinely curious because I have been in this relationship so long that I'm losing touch with reality. I am in this cycle within my relationship whereby my DP is cruel, then acts completely normal and I feel like I don't know what's normal anymore.

So here is an interaction from Monday and I know it sounds ridiculous. I want to know objectively if I am at fault and uncaring.
So the backstory relevant to this scenario is that I work more than DP although he earns a lot more. He's home all day and spends most of it in bed. I work all day and do all the housework, he refuses to help and if I ask I get so much abuse and anger that I've learnt to not ask anymore. I'm completely overwhelmed and resentful.

On Monday I text him asking very nicely if he could help in the house. I ask every now and again, he gets angry and then I leave it for a few months. I spent days planning how to word this message. I just asked if whilst he's home and I'm in work all day, could he please just clear anything he uses, empty the food bin if it's full and if there is washing out that's dry, please could he bring it in. I said I'd be very grateful. At present I'm running into the house between clinics putting washing out etc. if he drops something on the floor he'll leave it, or say "I can't pick it up" and walk off leaving me to do it. Further context is that he has a bad back, however he manages to drive to his father's regularly, play pool, to to the pub 4x a week and have sex. So he can do things that he wants to do.

Lunchtime Monday he came and told me there was a dead pigeon in the garden. I didn't think much of it, I was messaging a client and also assumed he'd sort it. He didn't sort it. It seems he just went to ay Xbox instead. He then text me in the evening and asking me to move the pigeon, bag it up etc and said he can't do it. This is where I am in the wrong; I said I'd rather not do it as I hate maggots and that he manages to go to the pub, play pool etc so I'm sure he could pick it up.

He came downstairs and started shouting at me. He said I was making him pick up the pigeon, I'm a horrible person. He said he doesn't know how he can live with someone as nasty as me. He then started calling me a bitch and said I disgust him. Followed by "I think of you as I think of that dead pigeon, you make me sick". Didn't retaliate and just kept asking him not to speak to me like that and said he was being cruel but he carried on and on. He proceeded to ignore me for the day and is now talking to me as normal.
Is this actually normal? I am so used to being told I'm disgusting, he hates me etc that I just don't know anymore.

Wow, he really hates you. He thinks you are just there to serve him.

This needs to be your wake up call. You wouldn't accept your best friend or your daughter being treated like that, and you shouldnt accept it for yourself.

fivepastmidnight · 07/10/2026 14:41

he refuses to help and if I ask I get so much abuse and anger . This is not acceptable for anything. Leave or make him leave - it will not improve.

AdidasBadidas · 07/10/2026 14:41

Why on earth are you with this person? Why??

When I objectively think about it, I can see that him speaking to me that way isn't how normal people communicate. However after years and years of it, you start doubting yourself. You start wondering "am I really so horrible that I have made him this angry". Sometime it's hurts and I feel completely broken and some days I just dissociate. I genuinely believe I wouldn't care if someone hurled abused at me or attacked me in the street because I'm so used to being treated badly. I have just popped home, the washing is out and it's raining. He's brought in his clothes and left the children's (none are mine) on the line in the rain.
I just assumed I must be really horrible to make him respond this way.

I just assumed I must be really horrible to make him respond this way.- no he is just a fucking vile twat

fumingrightnow1 · 07/10/2026 14:45

Completely normal if you live with an abuser

Sunbringer · 07/10/2026 15:58

In almost 14 years I can safely say my husband has never, ever been cruel to me. He’s never called me a bitch or said I disgust him, he’s never shouted at me

Oddly I’m also in the scenario where my husband is too unwell to help me around the house. He never ever makes demands of me, he tries his best to help, he expresses gratitude and he certainly doesn’t do anything that shows he is actually capable of helping.

ginasevern · 07/10/2026 16:45

@Thesoundofsilenceisdisturbed Your post made me so sad OP. You know this is very far from normal. Your husband is a dreadful abuser. This will be badly affecting your children too. They will be damaged by his behaviour or even start to copy it. Please seek legal advice and get out before he destroys you and the kids.

I only got this far before wondering what you are getting from this relationship?

AutumnLover1999 · 07/10/2026 17:09

He sounds a right catch 😞

Charlottian · 07/10/2026 17:19

No, the way he treats you and speaks to you is not normal.
@Thesoundofsilenceisdisturbed please get away from this absolute prick. Immediately. What is the point of being with someone who treats you like a doormat and talks to you with utter contempt? This is about as far from a loving relationship as it gets, short of him being physically violent towards you. Relationships should be about love, teamwork, mutual support and respect. He gives you none of those things.
Seriously, what is the point of this complete arsehole?
Please, please, please get rid.
You deserve better.

CalmForCats · 07/10/2026 17:34

It sounds quite abusive. Especially the bit about the dead pigeon, he spotted it and you were busy working. He is getting you to do the menial jobs, most likely because he has a superiority complex and thinks it is beneath him.

Please seriously think about how the future would be if you stayed.

Someone I know is in a similar situation however now they elderly and have dementia. They can no longer stand up to their partner and are completely at their mercy.

Please get out of this while you can.

Freeme31 · 07/10/2026 17:44

He acts this way because there are no consequences, you allow him to treat you so disrespectfully. What would he say if you told him you are so fed up of having to run around after him that life would be so much easier if he was not there? If you want your life to change and set your children a better example of how to behave and how to be treated then he needs to see the consequences of his behaviour. So no it’s not normal in any way

BoredZelda · 07/10/2026 17:44

It’s abuse.

If a man refuses to clean his own house and gets angry with you for asking, he wants a maid not a partner.

Leave now.

Thesoundofsilenceisdisturbed · 07/10/2026 18:29

Well something very unusual happened that has never happened before. He sent me a text apologising. It was sent at 12.30am whilst he was drunk. I have only just read it because I mute his messages as they cause too much stress.

This was basically what it said...
I apologise for being mean to you the other day...I accumulate inside, what I feel is your animosity from the little things you do almost daily (against me only)... which I feel are mean. I shouldn't have said horrible things.... being a twat isn't what I want to be and I'm sorry.

I know what you're all thinking, he's apologised so he's obviously a decent person who made a mistake. You don't understand though, he NEVER EVER apologises. He has said all these things to me before and much worse. I've been shouted at, followed around the house, he's threatened to punch me in the face. He has said and done so much more and never apologised.

Any insight as to why he has this time? It makes no sense.

Someone heard him that wasn't family!
It is still time to LTB>

Hadalifeonce · 07/10/2026 18:46

Maybe he thinks he went too far, and you might have to good sense to leave him

BeanNaGealai · 07/10/2026 18:49

That’s not an apology. He’s still blaming you for his behaviour.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/10/2026 18:50

It's still your fault, I see. 'I rage at you because you make me do it.'

Others may interpret this differently, but I read this as “sorry I was mean, but I only did it because you’re mean to me every day”. He’s gaslighting you.

"I know what you're all thinking, he's apologised so he's obviously a decent person who made a mistake."

I don't think any of us are thinking that. Words are cheap, it's how he treats you that counts. And it sounds like he treats you awfully

believeinbelieve · 07/10/2026 18:57

It's not an apology. He is still blaming you. He knows he went way too far this time maybe, but he is showing no insight into his own behaviour and taking no responsibility for it.

Don't be fooled by the word "sorry". I can appreciate this feels like a big deal when he's never said it before. But everything else he said in that message undermines it.

Drunk / wants sex / because he can/ knows he can control your emotions. Or all of them. Please leave him. You're wasting your life and your kids deserve a normal upbringing.

AshCullen1894 · 07/10/2026 19:01

Nobody is thinking he is a good guy. Vile twat that's what he is.

Seeingadistance · 07/10/2026 19:03

Does he know you're on Mumsnet? Can he get into your account here?

I think he's either reading this thread - and all the responses telling you that he's abusive and you should leave him, or ... the responses you've got here have created a shift in your demeanour and he can sense that he's losing his control over you.

Thesoundofsilenceisdisturbed · 07/10/2026 19:05

He's done and said much worse, repeatedly over ten years- which is why it makes no sense.
In fact when he shouts and swears at me, the more scared and upset I am, the more it fuels him.
