Slightly unhinged self catering packing/shopping list what might have I forgotten?

Its only a long weekend and it isn't that serious but I do like to have my things with me. I take from my grandmother who once bought a jug of gravy on a caravan holiday, you never know what you might need!

So with that in mind what slightly mad thing do you always take away with you that I should absolutely add to my packing list?

On top of the "normal" things we usually pack:

heated throw blanket
hand held milk frother
a good knife
a cheese grater
my own tea towels
extension cable
an over radiator drying rack

I have been known to take the air fryer but I think I will cope without it for 4 days!

The 4 of us are going to Bluestone, DC are 4 and 6 if it makes any difference to your suggestions!

@BiddyPopthe2nd my parents have a similar big plastic holiday box - I presume when I become enough of a real grownup I will start my own, perhaps this is the year.

I also always take a small travel screwdriver with changeable heads - has come in handy many times!

Off the top of my head -
Scissors
Pizza tray or similar
Tissues
Air freshener
Food bags
Pen/pencil

Washing up gloves and sponge

MajorSamanthaCarter · 07/10/2026 12:22

Fondue set
Cuddly toy...

Dancenation · 07/10/2026 12:26

Apron
garlic press
stovetop coffee maker

That’s what I always take on a self catering holiday.

This has blown my mind.
I never take any kitchen stuff to a self catering place

Billy47 · 07/10/2026 12:33

Antibacterial floor wiped snd gloves
I take them whenever I go anywhere after turning up to a caravan with shit splatter on the floor. I antibacterial everything before we relax. If found booze, vigra tablets and cash while wiping down my caravan.

Toilet roll.
Wine glasses.
Tv box for digital tv at night.Use our phone as a hot-spot for WiFi.

@HairsprayBabe my box has developed over 20 years I also forgot a handful of clean plastic pegs (for clothes or for closing food packages). It is a 22l box, so basically the size of 2 shoeboxes, to hold things in normally and easy to work out of on camp - but if a SC trip and especially a shorter trip, I just grab the essentials in a big ziploc bag (4.5l one from Ikea).

muddleofpuddle · 07/10/2026 12:49

If you drink, a wine stopper! To avoid either having to pour it down the sink once you've had enough (sacrilege!) or drink more than you want/should (more fun, but not good)! I've been caught out on this one a few times.

HairsprayBabe · 07/10/2026 12:54

@JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleneJolene how do you cope with the pathetic mugs and shitty knives?

Kitchen scissors, I’ve just come back from my third self catering holiday this year , and none of the places had a pair of scissors. I suspect, knowing scissors are one of the top items that get stolen that they have been purloined and just not noticed , but it’s such a pain .

Agree with this.
We often go to a quite upmarket self catering villa in Spain and got caught out first time with no garlic crusher, no pan spatter cover and oven gloves. No pasta strainer. Never enough dishwasher tabs. And knives always blunt. No kitchen roll.
So just chuck those things in the bag.

rollingeyes12 · 07/10/2026 13:01

I would actuallly take the air fryer if you’ve got space!

hellospring26 · 07/10/2026 13:04

Knives, chopping board (cannot deal with glass ones which seem to in most s/c), cutlery (autistic and very fussy), bottle opener as have never successfully opened a bottle with a wine waiter).

HairsprayBabe · 07/10/2026 13:06

@rollingeyes12 its a massive two drawer one annoying to lug - little one drawer one for holidays could be a good investment though I think ASDA do a 6l one for about twenty quid, I fear I might be falling off the deep end here!

Its 4 days, I just get on with it!
Can't imagine anything worse than all that packing and unpacking

PastySausageStew · 07/10/2026 13:19

-A chopping board- I'm not going to use some nasty wooden one someone else has had raw meat on and that can't go into the dishwasher. Ditto those glass ones.
-Sharp knife
-Scissors
-Ikea cereal clips - for use on cereal but also the corner of towels. There's 6 of us and I'm not wiping my face on someone's bum towel.
-Cafetiere (after the year DH plunged the one in the cottage and covered the ceiling, the walls, the entire kitchen and his face with boiling coffee
-Decent sized mug. I cannot be doing with teeny tiny mugs.

And for Bluestone I would definitely pack a clothes horse as there is nowhere to even hang bath towels let alone swimming kit. Not sure there was even coat hooks by the door. Also there were no oven mitts and only the thinnest of tea towels which was interesting when cooking.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 07/10/2026 13:19

@HairsprayBabe
A heated throw is a very good call, I will have to remember that for our next trip. Nothing worse than being cold and away from your home supply of warm stuff.

Lomonald · 07/10/2026 13:28

Oh i meant to say I take my own pillow cases, I know it is probably weird but I sleep better knowing it is my own, im not bothered about the duvet cover though

ArcangelaTarabotti · 07/10/2026 13:32

I normally take my own pillow 😂

Mirroredclock · 07/10/2026 14:16

bubblebath and candles

bababamama · 07/10/2026 14:21

I take a knife and chopping board (can’t deal with those glass ones they provide) plus a larger pan as typically the pans are inadequate. Check the list of what they provide as they do usually include a grater (or buy ready grated). Tea towels are provided often.

bababamama · 07/10/2026 14:22

But I do take my cafetière, plus ground coffee, even on cruises, we all have our quirks
