Reading about this just made me feel so sad and shocked, a GP, mum of 3, ran her own business on the side - killing someone is never the first thing

I wonder what she endured prior to this. And whilst a sleepover was happening? I just cannot imagine the horror for the children involved, losing mum and dad.

RIP Dr Hannah

I would like to talk about the devastation of male violence towards women. Especially women known to them.

And the fact that, as per previous poster, IF the perpetrator is the husband (noting this is sub judice) then as the law currently stands he will keep his parental rights to the three children. Make decisions about managing their inheritance, the huge nhs pension death in service payment that will be owed, their schooling etc …

I hope there is some provision that prevents that and stops any payment going to him until he is found not guilty.

She must have been terrified for herself and her children. Just senseless, a life lost, a life now locked up for whoever did it and three young children left without a mother leaving a wider family to pick up those pieces.
if it was her husband as charged then the whole thing is shocking, women should be safe in their homes from the people they share them with

Teffe · 09/10/2026 12:33

@Hoppity80 pension funds have trustees who can exercise discretion. If there is a private life insurance policy it will go to the spouse but there may have been a nomination for it to go into a trust (usual advice to keep out of inheritance tax),
so again there may be trustee discretion.

But as far as I know the proposed law change to stop a father having parental rights over children, when he murdered their mother, has not taken effect. It has been covered by Women’s Hour a few times. There are horrific cases where children have been forced by a family court to visit their father, knowing he killed their mother.

Teffe · 09/10/2026 12:35

To add there is a general provision now that you can’t profit from your crime (interesting case law where a murderer wrote a best selling book) but of course that requires a conviction. I imagine any life insurance payout will be held on trust for the children pending a court case.

The more we talk about VAWG, the better. MNHQ was right to leave this thread alone.

Dr Terry sounded awesome and the man who killed her is rotten to the core.

elperil · 09/10/2026 13:20

I get the feeling that she told him she was leaving him. The most dangerous time.

I can see the defence of mental illness/breakdown/etc. maybe featuring.

It is happening every single day. They do hate us, their fragile egos just can't cope with decision making strong women.

I think we should replace the acronym or improve the acronym VAWG.

Add M? MVAWG perhaps. VAWG only mentions the victims and survivors.

We need to make every single case of VAWG focus on the perpetrators of that violence.

elperil · 09/10/2026 13:32

MVAF. ? Male violence against females.

Yes, I'm beginning to agree, despite my reporting the thread initially. Several issues I hadn't considered when I did that.

I'm not sure that's the case as one family fought bravely and now there is Jade's law ( a mum of 4 who was murdered by a partner).

Teffe · 09/10/2026 16:02

@Cars4Gov sadly here is a summary of the current status of Jades Law (I’m hoping something might have changed since radio 4 covered it last month). This is why we need to be talking about it:

“Current Status: Although the legislation received Royal Assent in May 2024, it has faced implementation delays and is scheduled to come into force by the end of 2026. It is not retrospective.”

Portmore · 09/10/2026 16:40

So many women are killed by their partners.
This is just more widely reported in the media as she's a 'better victim'

What more do you expect from Daily Mail readers?

Are there a lot of DM readers on MN? Is it a thing ?

As it’s the newspaper with the greatest circulation in the UK I should think yes, there is a considerable number.

wouldyouactuallydothat · 09/10/2026 21:00

It bloody well should be in the daily mail

and the guardian
and the sun
and the BBC news
and the times
and telegraph
and daily mirror
and express

Politics can cause divisions as can social class and levels of education but this case shows male violence should unite us all. Whether you’re a working class woman from a council estate or a teenage girl targeted by a grooming gang or a middle class educated GP from an affluent village. None of it is acceptable. NONE.
