Does anyone have a flat sheet?

I am pondering adding a flat sheet to my bedding and wondered if anyone actually does that these days?

Mostly I want to feel like I am in a hotel getting into a crisp bed but wondering if it's just an extra faff that I will soon be bored of.

I am often too hot so I throw the duvet off and just sleep with the flat sheet, in the summer we just use the flat sheet to sleep under, maybe with a thin blanket.

TheChosenTwo · 08/10/2026 21:32

So people are using them for different reasons, one as a sheet on top of the mattress to protect it and sleep on and some using it as a lightweight alternative to a duvet in the summer?
I can see sense in the duvet alternative although I’m under a duvet all year round but I couldn’t handle the absolute faff of a flat bottom sheet. I buy the ‘deep’ fitted sheets and have never had an issue with them pinging off and I essentially crocodile roll in bed all night long 😂

Yes always. I'm lazy and it means I change the fitted sheet and flat sheet but not always the duvet.

Interesting, I always believed fitted sheets made flat sheets redundant but perhaps I will give them a go for the guest room

In our master bedroom we are one of the few people who use a traditional waterbed (heated) so I need to use a special kind of sheet for that. I am not boasting op I'm just telling you how it is.

What do you mean?

I’ve never slept WITHOUT a flat ( top) sheet before. Yuck!

Yes, fitted bottom sheet, flat sheet, duvet. I’m so happy reading this. I thought I must be the only person who does this. My family thinks it’s nuts.

It's the norm in some parts of the world. I was bemused when I came on MN and discovered that most people in the UK don't use a top sheet. Most sheets here are sold in sets of two, one fitted, one flat, plus pillowcases.

Mydogisagentleman · 08/10/2026 21:58

Only have flat sheets.
They can take some hunting down, but I prefer them on the bottom and top in the summer

longtompot · 08/10/2026 22:19

Yes, we do. A king size for a double bed. I got so fed up with the fitted ones popping off the corners, or the elastic stretching out of shape

What's yuck about not having a top sheet?
I change the duvet cover every week.

Yes, I prefer them to fitted sheets for the mattress and use one under my coverles duvet. It makes changing the bed really quick and easy!

Same!

HarveyJJ · 08/10/2026 22:49

Absolutely, fitted sheet then top sheet then duvet. Works for both me and DH. when I’m too hot I throw off my side of the duvet and just use top sheet while DH is still under both. Far easier on the laundry too, not always having to change duvet cover.

BeMoreDolly · 09/10/2026 03:41

Yes. I hate drafts round my feet and a top sheet prevents that. I like having a lightweight layer if I get too hot and want to throw the duvet off.

BethBynnag86 · 09/10/2026 05:13

Always!
A flat sheet under the duvet, ironed.I invest in high thread count ones because I'm fussy about what goes next to my skin.

adviceatthislatestage · 09/10/2026 05:30

I’ve found my people!

Have used a flat sheet, complete with hospital corners for years. Still have a fitted sheet on the mattress.

I’m actually using my late parents old Egyptian cotton sheets. Have no idea of thread count but they’re so heavy and crisp and in excellent condition despite being years old.

I have searched for other EC sheets but many of the higher thread counts are sateen /soft finish and I don’t want that. I like that cold, crisp, almost weighted feeling as I get in bed.

I do have some that I use in the summer months (especially this summer) when it is too warm for any sort of duvet, even a lightweight summer one.

I've just put my duvet back on the bed at the last bedclothes change a couple of days ago.

I do exactly this too.

HoraceCope · 09/10/2026 05:43

yes,
i cant remember why
it was handy when we got a new, larger, mattress
and handy in the summer to use under a quilt, instead of a duvet

Nugg · 09/10/2026 05:43

Always always always and always have

Empress13 · 09/10/2026 05:48

yep it saves washing the duvet cover regularly

JasmineMac · 09/10/2026 05:57

I don't use flat sheets. I use sheet straps (they're like braces) on my fitted base sheet, game changer, fitted sheet stays wrinkle free and perfectly in place.

Fitted sheets are a relatively recent thing, so I grew up with flat sheets, a top sheet, and a bottom sheet, blanket on top and then an eiderdown. Mum bought us kids duvets (‘continental quilts’) in 1976, but we always had a flat bottom sheet. Mum and dad still had sheets and blankets, as did everyone we stayed with, my Granny and aunts. The top sheet normally had some decoration at the turned over edge, the bottom sheets were plain. My Mum died ten years ago and still only used flat sheets, I have some of hers that she was given when she got married.
When I met DH and we would stay with his Grandmother, I loved her ancient fine linen sheets that had been pressed and starched, wool blankets and a cloudy eiderdown on top on cold nights.
I’ve bought fitted sheets and always had a mixture, but I might shift to only flat again. Folding and ironing fitted sheets seems beyond me, and flat sheets are more flexible, a king sheet will fit a double bed as well. I don’t use one as a top sheet very often, mainly use one as a cover in the Summer, but I have some nice ones so I occasionally make up the bed with the top sheet too.
