What would persuade frequent fliers to fly less?

I read this very article and liked the suggestion of having to pay more for each subsequent flight you take in a year. Maybe a family who take one holiday a year won't be penalised but the people who fly multiple times a year would face increased penalties the more they fly. Currently 5% of the population is taking 33% of the flights!

I worry so much about climate change but people around me seem to not be making any adjustments to their carbon-heavy lifestyles. What could be the solution in your view?

I don't really want to debate whether flying is the biggest cause of climate change. It isn't. But it's one of the biggest discretionary changes we can make to our impact on the climate as individuals.

The expansion of Heathrow would be an expensive disaster for Britain and the world. Burnham needs to block it | George Monbiot

A third runway would fly in the face of reason. If we are to prioritise human life over short-term ‘growth’, we need to use planes less, not more, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

I think all people should be entitled to one flight out and one back for non business
Once you have had that no more allowed
I laugh when I talk to people in their 20s-30s who boast about how many places they have visited
When they get most see nothing of the history or culture but lie on a beach or go to bars and restaurants
And put endless Photos on social media that no one else has the slightest interest in looking at

When they get most see nothing of the history or culture but lie on a beach or go to bars and restaurants

But how do you know what they've done? I regularly holiday in Europe, often in places that the unimaginative write off as a giant AI resort but always visit museums, castles, Roman ruins, inland villages, go on boat trips, eat local food etc and see lots of other people doing the same.

One alternative I really liked was an apartment complex in Tenerife that had a vending machine where you could refill your own water bottles with chilled filtered water for a trivial sum of 10/20 C a time. But that sort of infrastructure needs investment.

We had this in our hotel in Florence this year, a glass bottle in the room to refill at a station in the bar for free at any time. We also could refill our own bottles and saves a fortune on buying water.

Lots of places now only sell water in cans, cans can be recycled a lot more than plastic bottles.

I do hope the deposit scheme is not delayed again.
