Will I ever have a lay in again?

I had an exhausting week and went to bed at 9pm as I couldn't keep my eyes open. No plans today. Yet here I am wide awake at 5am. I know our sleep changes as we get older, I previously had quite a long thread about waking up at 4am (turned out to be due to stress!) but is that now it for lay ins? Will I never be able to sleep like my 20s and 30s again?

I still don't understand what point you are trying to make?

I was exhausted yesterday and don't have any plans today so wanted a lay in. How would doing some gardening today help that? A day with no plans is a rare occasion and the only opportunity I have for a lay in, how would having more plans the day I want to have a lay in help me stay asleep in bed longer?

It is very clear surely what I’m saying

I know what you wanted to happen today. But it didn’t. So… looking forward to the future what can you do to sleep better… get really physically tired and spends lots of time outside in fresh air

No you asked what my plans were today and when I said nothing major, hence wanting the lay in, you scoffed about me not doing any gardening.

Now you are back peddling and saying I should have done some gardening yesterday? I very clearly in my OP said I was exhausted yesterday, yet couldn't lay in today. That was the whole point of the thread. Being exhausted but not being able to lay in.

What on earth?? “Scoffed”?! Honestly you sound very grumpy and thin skinned

Literally all I was suggesting was getting physically tired

weird

I wish I was an early bird! Always been a night owl and could cope with getting up early for work. Getting harder and harder now in my mid 40s and yet it’s still after midnight when I drop asleep 😫

MidnightMeltdown · 03/10/2026 10:21

9pm is very early to go to bed. Not saying you shouldn’t if you’re tired, but I’m not surprised that you woke up at 5. That’s a full 8 hours sleep.

RaininSummer · 03/10/2026 10:26

Possibly not. I wake between five and six even at weekend and even though I'm still tired. I end up dozing to podcasts and the sitting in bed with tea or coffee and my book at the weekend. Unfortunately I'm not one of those who can get up and make use of the time as I feel like death all day if I do that.

oh yes absolutely, I don't usually go to bed that early but given how exhausted I was its very unfair I couldn't push on and have a few extra hours!

My partner got up at 10:30 in the end, his sleeping skills are top tier...

I’m on hrt and Amatriptyline (for nerve pain) I’ve gone from 4-5 am wake to sleeping till 7ish. Still exhausted though I go to bed at 940/10 every night.

I don’t even set an alarm anymore for work, if I did, I’d be awake before it without fail.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 04/10/2026 05:56

@Newabodemode my sleep was amazing with mitazipine. I put on weight but it was worth it for the sleep.

My HRT is not making a difference to my sleep sadly.

Are you stressed? I was so shocked about how much of an impact it had on my sleep.

I find any stress affects my sleep hugely. I'm an anxious, overthinker by nature and always have been. Have had stress of one kind of another for as long as I can remember in my adult life tbh! I've read about the long term impacts of stress like this and do worry about my future health.

Yes, I am. Multiple causes at the moment. 😕Lots of unsettling dreams. Can't see a way to lessen causes of stress either.

Embrace it OP! I’ve not slept past 5am for about 9 years now. I used to get so frustrated then I realised it’s the only time in the day I actually get to myself and now I love it. If someone else wakes early and comes downstairs before 7 I feel myself getting agitated 😂. I read, go for a run, listen to a podcast, try not to scroll TOO much. Sometimes I get my life admin out of the way and feel smug that it’s done before anyone else is even awake. It’s definitely a “thing”…maybe caused by changing hormones or just aging, but I don’t try and fight it anymore. I think it’s natures way of giving me time to myself 😁
