Anyone else have fleeting special interests? Mine's been air traffic control.

I have been watching You Tube videos of interactions between Air Traffic Controllers and Pilots on repeat, some funny ones. Also sad ones. I practically feel like I have learnt how to fly a plane. Clearly I haven't!

The ones I like best are where the ATC puts the Pilots through their paces. They are so good at their jobs. They also have some amusing interactions. I also just really like, I mean love, the sound of a voice over a radio frequency.

I'm not sure but I think historical disasters could become a special interest. There's something so all encompassing about learning everything about a past event from perspectives of different people and also through the lens of technologies.

I wonder how the 'smart phone age' will be studied in future centuries, it's been a mixed bag so far 😂

You must be cold

I’m now a land mark and people step over my frozen body.

Someone will come and retrieve you at some point, make a film out of it. Don't worry!

Shipping containers...

Wouldn’t have thought there’s much to hold your interest there?

tell me about them? I’m now intrigued…

I got very interested in ferry disasters. And oil platform/rig disasters.
I'm not sure why but I find it interesting to think about how these things happened and how these huge very complicated mechanisms with so many parts need to work in sync and the things that can happen when they don't.
I am interested in large structures like power stations too.

My dad was an engineer and helped build and run oil rigs. But other than that I don't know where I got the interest from.

I used to watch ski resort webcams, mainly people standing around, because DS went skiing once. I was watching them long after he got back.

I am always looking for my Mastermind specialist subject. At the moment, I am torn between HRT and supermarket mince pies of 2026.

My current social media obsession is alligators (who knew you can actually train them?!) and funeral homes/embalming. Both likely to be fleeting passions but at the moment, I’m still geeking out.

WhatDoRacoonsSay · 02/10/2026 14:27

Disney food, even though I have no desire to go there.

MadisonAvenue · 02/10/2026 14:36

I’ve been watching a lot of videos of haircuts lately, there’s usually a consultation and then you see a bit of cutting followed by the result.
Some American ones are awful, I don’t think that some have the same level of training as stylists do here. And some are so over the top, “I’m so excited to give you this style, are you excited?” whilst grinning inanely.

I love curly hair transformation cuts and also hair dematting videos. I watch loads of them. I don't have either curly or matted hair but I'm now an expert on how to deal with them. I'd love to demat someone's hair and if you need any advice in curly hair products let me know

Joomchi at the moment.

We are planning a house renovation and I spent way too much time and bought several books to understand the fundamental principles of interior design.

I'm obsessed with music theory. I have a little app on my phone now and have bought all the books and have self taught grade 1-3 theory.

TennisLady · 02/10/2026 15:14

Medieval History has been my thing for a while.

ChorizoDog · 02/10/2026 15:23

I enjoyed the Skyking documentary on Disney+

Their interactions are interesting. They are all so defiant!

topcat2014 · 02/10/2026 15:24

I follow accounts about dairy farming and horse shoes.

I live in a city with allergies to most animals

BertieBotts · 02/10/2026 15:29

I've gone through so many.

Once it was the history of world electrical plugs I became unreasonably fascinated by. Hmm
Currently it's laundry detergents/washing cycles and additives - I found the subreddit r/laundry and have been obsessed.

Various puzzle games. CluesBySam is my current one.

I went through a phase of freehand embroidery. That was fun. I should finish the shirt I started doing for my 8yo, his 5yo brother will fit into it now Grin

I'm quite fascinated by climbing! I love the netflix documentaries about the free-climbers and free-solo climbers. It all looks so terrifying, sometimes I habe to hide behind my hands 🫣

Hands up if you are neurodivergent! I have ADHD. The hyperfocus is real!

If you haven’t seen it already, try out the Ice Guardians documentary on Netflix, all about enforcers. Really interesting watch.

So I tried to watch this tonight, but ended up watching a programme about Jimmy Galante and the hockey team he bought for his 17 year old son, then the fbi mob investigation.

It was still hockey though! I’ll try yours once the kids go to bed (they were out at a club earlier).

What a brilliant thread idea - titanic and Everest for me. No idea why as I’m never going to visit either - just weirdly fascinated

I am a FR nerd ,my children find it hilarious 🤦‍♀️

Mine for a while was Chernobyl. I was fascinated for weeks about it, read everything, watched everything I could,

Then my ds popped round one day and said I had ever heard of Chernobyl (he’s 26) , he was over the moon to discover I was as obsessed as he was and we spent many an hour discussing it at length.

we both have ADHD, he has ASD too

when i was a kid, about nine, my special interest was lampposts 😆. I used to sit for hours every night for months watching our village ones come on and recording them all in a notebook, our house had a good view of the neighbour hood streets and I knew exactly what order and what time they all come on,

then in my teens it was radio stations and their frequencies.

Then Maps (still love those)

Ive had so many over the years.

my dad did too, and I’ve passed it on to my son and to a lesser extent my eldest dd.

I do have a fascination for urban exploration and those people who like to climb buildings and towers

I loved The Boring Talks and also listen to Cautionary Tales. BT is probably still available somewhere and highly recommended. The best one was, wait for it, about the European Pallet Pool. You know pallets, that goods get delivered to shops on? There is a system, and they're all collectively owned and tracked. It was fascinating, honestly.

A friend actually recorded one of the Boring Talks (I won’t say which one as lots of people who know me in RL would know). I’d be horrified if they knew that I listened to it dozens and dozens of times when I was going through a tough time because I found hearing their voice just chatting away very soothing. I do wonder if there’s anyone looking at the analytics for BBC sounds thinking ‘wow, this episode has a lot of listens from one obscure part of the world’ Grin
